The famous Japanese two wheeler manufacturing company, Yamaha had stepped into the scooter segment in India by launching its first scooter Ray previous year. The scooter segment of India is booming day by day and with the launch of the female oriented scooter Yamaha Ray, Yamaha cemented its position in this particular segment. Ray, the scooter which was targeted towards the young females of urban India turned out to be quite successful and popular within a year among not only the young girls but also the young boys all over the country. Perhaps that is why Yamaha pulled up their sleeves to manufacture a scooter for the Y chromosomes as well and as a result the Ray Z came into existence.
However, Ray Z does not differ much from that of the existing Ray and both are being powered by the same powertrain - the air-cooled, 113cc engine that produces a maximum of 7.1PS power and 8.1Nm torque now gets roller type rocker arms and low friction oil seals to reduce frictional losses thereby improving efficiency. Ray Z comes with exterior changes rather than any interior up gradation if compared to Ray and it comes with a price of Rs. 48, 555 (Ex showroom Delhi). A detail of this jazzy male scooter from Yamaha is given below.
Ray was built on the concept of a "Stylish-design scooter" which also adorns strong feminist character in itself; on the other hand, the new Ray Z sheds strong masculine characters which are enough to please the diehard male fans of Yamaha. Yamaha Ray Z has been launched in three different color combinations – Red and Black, White and Black and Black, apart from the changes in the color, the scooter uses the same body structure of Ray which carries sharp lines. Yamaha has designed Ray Z with smart and trendy decals and it is assumed that the checkered pattern towards the lower end of the seat at the rear is inspired from MotoGP. The sporty look of this scooter has been further enhanced due to the stylish meter visor that has been provided a smoked finish which turns the design as fresh and new. A lot of other cosmetic changes includes the sports car cockpit themed instrument panel that uses the carbon pattern in the background; the long and comfortable seat that comes with a new carbon fiber patterned cover, the rear grab bar looks different due to its unique wing-like design. The ‘V-shaped’ headlamp with turn indicators integrated gives the scooter a jewel-look. Adorned with the ‘Z’ sticker all over its body, Yamaha Ray Z looks cool and an ideal scooter to be owned by the young male commuters.
The overall dimension of the scooter has been provided below:
|OVERALL HEIGHT||1090 mm|
|GROUND CLEARANCE||128mm (min)|
|TYRE SIZE (Front/Rear)||90/100-10 53J(Tube type)|
Yamaha Ray Z comes with the powerful 113cc, air cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve with CVT engine that produces a maximum power of 7.1Ps at the rate of 7500rm and a maximum torque of 8.1Nm at the rate of 5000rpm similar to the Ray. This powerful engine has proven its reliability in use in the markets of the ASEAN countries. The engine comes fitted with a BS type carburetor with a throttle position sensor (TPS) function. The combination with the settings of the CVT, it helps in the smooth start-up acceleration and lively passing acceleration, excellent fuel efficiency and good emissions.
The engine now have got the roller type rocker arms and low friction oil seals too, which does the job of reducing frictional losses and improves efficiency in the performance. This scooter responds quickly with the slight twist of the throttle and reaches a 70km mark with ease but if one tries to push it hard then the lack of power could be felt. The peppy engine with some of these tiny new additions does not give a performance which is different from its sibling Ray; also the company claims that this scooter will return a mileage of 53kmpl which is impressive.
Yamaha Ray Z comes with the telescopic type front fork suspension that ensures quick handling and running so due to the bigger suspension stroke, over the rough roads, Ray Z performs with an assured feeling of stability. The front and rear gets the drum brakes of 130mm diameter each. This braking system of Yamaha Ray Z makes it easier for the rider to glide through the city traffic easily though the disc brakes are the preferable choice nowadays. Ray Z has an upright seating position and well cushioned seats. Overall the Ray Z is an automatic scooter which is fun to ride around in city traffic.
Yamaha Ray Z has been priced at Rs. 48, 555 (Ex Showroom Delhi).
The Ray Z comes in the following three sporty shades:
There are many scooters in the market segment from which Yamaha Ray Z faces competition but Honda Dio stands up as a tough competitor against the new scooter.
Honda Dio, the bold and trendy scooter from Honda’s stable is not exactly biased towards any specific gender but then it’s stylish looks certainly attracts more youths towards itself. Recently Honda has upgraded the engine of Dio with the latest HET (Honda Eco Technology) due to which this scooter gives a promising mileage not less than 60kmpl. This move by Honda has truly stirred the scooter segment of India; however, Ray Z too is quite efficient in terms of performance on the road. Apart from performance criteria, Ray Z stays quite ahead of Dio in terms of appearance and style and it is believed that Ray Z being a sporty looking scooter, its greater price than Honda Dio too would lure the consumers towards itself. A brief detail of the engines of both the scooters are given below:
|Engine||Displacement||Maximum Power||Maximum Torque|
|Yamaha Ray Z||Air cooled, 4-stroke,SOHC,2valve||113cc||7.1PS/7500rpm||8.1Nm/5000rpm|
|Honda Dio||4 stroke, single cylinder, air cooled, OHC||109cc||8bhp/7500rpm||8.4Nm/5000rpm|
The popular and stylish two wheeler manufacturing company Yamaha has once again won the hearts of the two-wheeler enthusiasts of the country by launching yet another aggressive and sporty scooter Ray Z, second scooter by the company so far. Ray being the first scooter aimed towards the females of the country attracted so many youths that the company launched another scooter only for the male consumers within a year! The most admirable move by the company is that they have divided Ray Z into two parts – Ray SZ-RR which is meant for the youngsters due to its sporty styling and Ray SZ-S which is meant for any of the family members due to its simple, calm and composed design. It is clear that with only two scooters Yamaha is set on the minds of the customers already and it is yet to be seen how the company maintains its position in such a competitive segment, as for now, Yamaha Ray Z definitely a crowd-puller due to its sporty looks and great performance.
