The scooter segment in the Indian market has come a long way from being almost dying to being a hotly contested arena. There was a time, when in India, the scooter segment was limited to two or three options, and the rising popularity of motorcycles over scooters was causing the slump in sales in the scooter segment. Then came the Honda Activa, which in true sense, revolutionized the entire scooter market, and paved the path for the future of scooters in India.

And after 15 years since the launch of the first generation Activa, much has changed in the Indian two wheeler market. It is much vast than before, much competitive than before and much desirable than before. The market now has a range of 110cc scooters to choose from, which caters to a larger audience who prefer utility and fuel efficiency over everything else.

Though, there exists a category of customers, who want more from a scooter - more performance, more features, better ride quality and riding dynamics and better desirability. For such class of customers, the segment of 125cc scooters has been a saving grace, as every scooter which falls in this segment provides you the extra dash over the 110cc scooters on sale, in almost every possible aspect.

It all started with the Kinetic Flyte and Suzuki Access 125, and now the segment has dwelled into a variety of options to choose from. While Honda has taken the finesse of the brand Activa to an altogether new level in the face of Activa 125, Mahindra has come up with a much more refined and contemporary scooter in the form of Gusto 125, and has moved over its mistakes which it did with the Rodeo UZO 125 and Duro DZ. Vespa, on the other hand, has spiced up the game by launching the all new Vespa VXL 125, a scooter which has increased the desirability of the already most desirable Vespa brand.

And now, the pioneer in this segment, Suzuki Access, has finally received its first comprehensive facelift, which looks promising and a game changer. With these four aforementioned scooters, the segment of premium 125cc scooters has become hotter than ever before, and we are going to zero on a decision about the best all rounded package in the segment. Here we go:-

If you leave the last decade aside, the Indian two wheeler market was not that revolutionary place which it is today. Opposite to the current times which have seen a lot of segments brewing in the market, there was a time when the Indian audience had limited options to choose from, especially in the scooter category. What we were left to choose from, were a handful of choices which were purely meant for the daily commutes of the masses.

Not now, as those times when only 100cc scooters were available in India have gone. The scenario of today has changed completely, and what we have today is a range of 150cc scooters as well, leave alone the segment of 125cc scooters. In a market which was too conventional to accept a 150cc scooter, is now making all the major two wheeler makers to think about giving the Indians a taste of their 150cc or bigger offerings to Indian audience.

In this feature story, we are going to throw some light on a handful of 150cc or bigger scooters available in India, which are currently few in number, but then, considering their prowess and market image, we can expect other manufacturers to follow their foot-steps as well. It is because of these four 150cc+ products, that we can hear rumors or confirmations of 150cc or bigger scooters from other major manufacturers as well. Here’s a list of the four 150cc+ scooters which are currently gracing the Indian two wheeler market:-

We, in the Indian market, were used to the very conventional looking and purposeful scooters, which were either targeted towards female buyers or mature male customers. And then, came the Vespa range, which altogether changed the face of the scooter segment in India. Never, in the Indian market, the customers were as fashion-conscious as before, then the Vespa arrived and gave them a wide range of color options to choose from, and an opportunity to standout from the crowd.

Yes, they are much more expensive than the rest of the rather monotonous looking scooters in India, yet nothing has stopped the Vespa range to gain the immense popularity which they have received today. To keep the momentum going on, Piaggio, the parent company of Vespa, displayed an all new range of Vespas as well as some of its internationally available models at the Auto Expo 2016.

Here are all the ten different models which Piaggio put on the show at the biggest auto display show of India.

When the Honda Activa 110 made its debut in the Indian market some fifteen years ago, nobody would have thought that the scooter segment in India will get refurbished this vigorously. From an almost dead segment to the one which is witnessing the most amount of action, the category of automatic scooters now spawn a variety of models, ranging from mass-oriented (and as per some manufacturers – female oriented) puny scooters to the niche and classic Vespas.

Which brings in to another fact – while a majority of automatic scooters have been in the range of 100-110cc scooters, the game has been upped by the companies with the introduction of 125cc scooters in the segment. Purely meant for those who want exclusivity and added power, the segment of 125cc scooters has witnessed a lot of action in the last five to six years, especially after the launch of the premium Vespas. Apart from the added power and weight, the 125cc scooters also come at a premium over the usual 100-110cc scooters, but all of the extra dough is definitely worth the added price. Here’s a comprehensive list and description of all the seven 125cc scooters currently available in the Indian market, which somehow are meant to be designed for both the masses as well as classes.

Among these four models, Vespa S and Vespa Elegante are available in the Indian market but Vespa GTS Super 150 and Vespa GTS Super 300 are reportedly to be launched in the Indian market very soon. Of the two models displayed at the IBW, 2015, the GTS Super 150 had a bright red colour but with the same retro look like every Vespa scooter gets. To add to the sophistication, the scooter has got a combination of black for its seats and tires and shiny metallic inserts all over its body and metal rear view mirrors. This scooter draws its power from a LEm 3 single cylinder, 4 strokes, 3 valves, 154.8 cc engine as the name suggests which provides a power output of 8.7 kW at 7,500 rpm and a torque output of 12 Nm at 5,000 rpm.
