The year 2016 is coming towards an end and what a year it has been for the automotive industry in India. If statistics are to be believed, India is in the highest rankings in terms of growing economy. People have started investing in higher range of motorcycles that are lauded in the performance and engineering arena. More and more players started entering the Indian subcontinent to showcase their entry level performance machines. It just didn’t stop there. Players in India also fired all their pistons to go head to head with their foreign counterparts.
Not long ago had we featured the CNBC-TV18 OVERDRIVE Awards which christened the Apache RTR 200 4V as their Motorcycle of the year. Christmas came a little early for TVS and now the celebration has doubled as their flagship model, the Apache RTR 200 4V has won yet another coveted award, this time it is even bigger.
It has now bagged the IMOTY (Indian Motorcycle of the Year) 2017 in a huge bells and whistles ceremony in Mumbai. It is the most credible and fancied awards in the country for the two wheeler segment.
IMOTY was started in 2007 when the senior members consisting of eminent journalists from leading automobile media in India got together and decided to give birth to the respected Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) award.
Before the Apache was announced as a winner, it had a bunch of tough contenders to fight it for. Only twelve motorcycles out of the 30 and odd released made it to the nominations. The nominated two wheelers were: Aprilia SR150, DSK Benelli TNT 25, Harley Davidson Custom 1200, Hero iSmart, Honda Navi, Kawasaki Versys 650, Triumph Street Twin, Royal Enfield Himalayan, Triumph T-120, Triumph Thruxton R, UM Motorcycles Renegade and the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V.
The nominated motorcycles are judged on various parameters, such as price, fuel economy, styling, comfort, safety, performance, practicality, technical innovation, value-for-money, and suitability for Indian riding conditions. The runner up was bagged by the Kawasaki Versys 650 and the third position went to the Royal Enfield Himalayan.
This award is an expert and an independent judgement taken by highly experienced jury members who go through a decisive and tamper-proof voting process and give an unbiased unadulterated decision. All the motorcycles selected should either be manufactured or assembled in the country regardless of their birth place and must not have had any cosmetic facelifts or small mechanical changes, like different power or drive-trains. They must also hit the showroom floors before November 30th of the previous year.
The ceremony is sponsored by one of India’s leading tyre manufacturer JKTyre and for this year, the distinguished jury panel was headed by fourteen of India’s leading and renowned names from motoring scribes who have had the highest level of experience and expertise in judging a motorcycle enough to crown the winner amongst many greats.
The livery of the event was highlighted by music performed by legendary rocker Gary Lawyer who played a dedicated set ‘motoring music’ created only for the ceremony.
Over the last decade, the Apache brand has emerged as one of the most proven home grow brands in the entry level performance oriented motorcycle segment. TVS has gone with their flagship model which somehow has managed to create new benchmarks when it comes to delivering raw power in a relatively affordable package.
TVS adopted an all new design philosophy for the new Apache RTR 200 4V, designed on the Draken concept it showcased at the Auto Expo this year. The motorcycle looks far more aggressive and outrageous than the erstwhile versions of the Apache with sleek and minimalistic silhouette. The tank is substantially large and the knee recesses can accommodate the riders of all kinds of heights. The razor sharp engine cowl is larger than any other Apache making it have a muscular stance. The bike comes with stepped split seats and double barrel pattern exhaust pipe.
The 197.7cc single-cylinder, air and oil cooled fuel-injected motor makes 21bhp and 18.1Nm of torque. It gets a much-needed fifth cog, too. The motor has a wide range of power band, especially after the 4000 rpm line. It can get you from 0 – 60 kph in 3.9 seconds and 12 sec for the 0-100 kph run, which is impressive.
Race origin split cradle chassis ensures total control at high speeds and flex in tight corners. The bike comes with a conventional set of hydraulic telescopic forks at the front and a race tuned KYB monoshock with compression and rebound damping for the perfect track balance. As like other Apaches, the ride is tuned on a stiffer side to provide a sportier set of dynamics. Optional race spec Pirelli tyres adds the needed performance and grip. Braking duties are taken by 270mm petal disc brake at the front and a 240mm petal disc brake at the rear, with an optional ABS provided on board. With this, the new Apache RTR 200 4V gets the best braking setup in its segment.
