TVS Motor Company does not need any new introduction for it is quite popular because of its two-wheelers. TVS has produced vehicles ranged from entry level domestic scooters and bikes to international level motorcycless which have become quite popular amongst the customers eventually.

Like the other bike manufacturers of India, TVS too had to step into the commuter segment, so they launched the Star Sports, a sporty looking 100cc bike in the year 2007. The popularity of Star Sports faded away slowly with time as more and more entry level bikes emerged in the same segment.

Now TVS has launched the new and updated Star Sports and has added a new 4-stroke, 99.7cc engine which is supposed to deliver a outstanding mileage of 87.7klmpl, which is higher than any other bikes of the same segment in India. Check out more about this commuter motorcycle.

TVS Star Sports have borrowed a lot of styling features from its sibling the Star City, but to suit the name of the bike, TVS has given an overall sporty look to it. The front of the bike adorns a clear lens headlamp which comes with pilot lamps that looks very aggressive and lively at the same time, above which a tinted visor may also be noticed. A black color theme has been kept as standard for which it can be seen on various parts such as engine, alloy wheels and the silencer. The palm grips are soft and rear view mirrors look nice while the orange colored turn headlights have been placed in twin separate pods. The most attractive part of TVS Star Sports is that the body of the bike wears stylish graphics all over and looks most robust compared to the other bikes in this segment. Star Sports have a sporty yet simple and clearly readable instrument cluster that features twin pods, which houses the analogue speedometer as well as odometer while the stylishly shaped other pod houses the analog fuel gauge with other meters. The contoured seat is comfortable and has been shaped uniquely to suit the needs of the modern customers at the same time offering the perfect riding posture.

The rear portion of the motorcycle gets a grab rail under which there is a sleek clear lens tail lamp and a short mud guard that complements well with the overall styling of the bike. TVS Star Sports is simple yet elegantly styled bike which has everything to attract the young generation of India.

Engine and Performance

As mentioned earlier, TVS Star Sport comes loaded with a 4-stroke, 100cc, Duralife engine that manages to churn out a maximum power of 5.50Kw at 7500rpm and torque figure of 7.5Nm at 5000rpm. This engine is mated to a 4 speed constant mesh transmission which has all gears in a shift down pattern. The engine is the major drawback of this bike because firstly it is not refined, and secondly the engine really starts to feel strained when pushed hard. Reaching a top speed of approx 85kmph is a very rigorous task, due to short initial gear ratio, one would face many difficulties even in the city roads. At high speeds the engine starts making loud noise and vibrations that feels irritating, the clutch is however very smooth and functions well, to reach from 0-60kmph, the bike takes 10 seconds which means this engine is not at all quick like that of Honda or Bajaj etc.

TVS claims a mileage of 87.7kmpl, but on city roads, but under real circumstances the bike manages to return approx 65kmpl and 4kmpl more when rode on the highways. Still the bike is quite fuel efficient and leaves no question on this part.

The specification of the engine has been provided below:

ENGINE 4-Stroke
POWER 5.50Kw @ 7500rpm
TORQUE 7.5Nm @ 5000rpm
BORE X STROKE 51.0mm X 48.8mm
TRANSMISSION 4 speed constant mesh

Ride and Handling

TVS Star Sports is a bike which has a shorter wheelbase; this puts a question mark on the stability factor as well as poses insecurity while taking sharp corners at high speeds. The front of the bike has telescopic hydraulic fork suspension system while the rear comes fitted with 5-stage adjustable suspension system. With such a suspension set up, the bike is capable of tackling all the bumps and potholes well if there is one rider, but with a pillion rider, bigger bumps can be felt easily. However with a high ground clearance and light weight, this bike manages to ride with ease on tight spaces.

Star Sports gets 110mm of Drum brakes at both front and rear which works efficiently and quite faithfully brings the bike to a halt as soon as they are applied.

FRONT SUSPENSION Telescopic Hydraulic Fork
REAR SUSPENSION With 5-stage adjustable
FRONT TYRE 2.75 X 17
REAR TYRE 3.00 X 17
FRONT BRAKE Drum 110 mm Dia
REAR BRAKE Drum 110mm Dia

TVS Star Sport comes with a price tag of Rs. 40,080 (Ex Showroom Delhi).
The base version is available in the following two shades:

  • Red
  • Black
The deluxe version is available in the following shades:
  • Silver
  • Black
  • Blue

TVS Star Sport competes with Bajaj Platina in the market segment.

Bajaj Platina

Platina is another entry level bike from the stable of Bajaj which was launched in the year 2006. Bajaj Platina is a feature packed bike whose price is lower than even TVS Star Sport. Well the pricing is not the major factor here, Platina does not look as stylish as Star Sport, but the engine of the bike is much more refined and powerful than Star Sports and the ride too have not been compromised with. It is suggested that if you want a serious performing bike then go for Bajaj Platina or else, if you want to have a style quotient of your own then TVS Star Sport is the apt.

TVS Star Sports is a bike which has been targeted towards the young male commuters of India and it is clear that that is why the price has been kept so reasonable. The motorcycle is attractive and comes in attractive shades as well along lastly another plus point of this bike is that it is fuel efficient also. For needs like daily commuting, it is hoped that this bike will not let you down and will manage to deliver an apt performance.

It is also clear from the facts and details that is provided above that why has TVS Star Sports lost its ground among the competition of the entry level bikes in India. still there are many spaces where TVS can upgrade Star Sport and bring it back into the market.

“So said, Star Sport basically is an economy bike targeted at the middle class masses. The price for either of the versions fall below the 40k mark. Additionally, TVS is offering a 5-year warranty on some parts of the bike. If you ask me a two-word verdict on my review, I would say that the TVS Star Sport is a style and sensible bike worth all money for the first-time bike buyers.” – Bikeadvice

There are only two things about this bike which may prompt you to buy it; first its fuel efficiency and second its price. It’s priced below than most of its competitors which may work in the favour of this bike otherwise we find it hard for this bike to succeed. It has many drawbacks like its slow and less refined engine with poor after sale services and resale value of TVS. We don’t think if it’s a value for money bike because at this price you can have other trusted bikes which are more powerful and easy to maintain with high resale value.” – Autos Maxabout
