The Japanese brand’s new scooter for the up-country customers

Honda might have struck gold with the now legendary 110cc Activa (now called Activa 4G) unisex family scooter, but apart from this, there has been no other scooter from Honda which has set the sales charts on fire. The Dio now feels too long in the tooth and feels dated even after having much sportier design as compared to its competition. On the other hand, the Activa 125 and Aviator appear to be priced in the premium range and are out of the radar of most of the prospected buyers in the scooter market, who put value for money over everything else on their need list.

Luckily for the rest of us, Honda has come up with another scooter for the up-country customers who wish to zoom around the countryside with the same ease as the city dwellers, the Honda Cliq they call it. The market in India sees an upward trend ever since 2010, thanks to the improved rural infrastructure and rising income levels, affordability has become a norm to people from small towns and villages too. Giving more utility and sturdy built quality, the Cliq will have an edge compared to other scooters for the non-urban customers. Here is an overview of this new scooter from Honda:

STYLING

Positioned below the Honda Activa and the Dio, this scooter is also based on the same platform its siblings are. This scooter was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2016 which was dubbed as the Navi replacement. The edgy and sharp visual cues gave a lot of attractiveness and a bold outlook to the scooter. The production model, however, has a much more subtle outlook.

To start with, the styling of the Cliq is purely subjective. This is a rather oddball looking scooter that is said to focus on rural and semi-urban customers. At the front, it takes cues from the old Honda Dio that houses the large AHO headlamp unit onto the body panel and interestingly gets a windscreen embedded within the bodywork itself. Tucked behind it is the same is not your typical looking handlebar. Instead, it gets an upright handlebar used on the commuter motorcycles with a box hiding the central connection carried over by the Navi.

The side panel gets a styling element similar to that of the Navi as well, but carries more panache with the elongated bodywork. Similar to the Navi, the engine is completely exposed and the tyre gets a full proper mudguard, which is finished in black. The taillight cluster has elements taken from multiple machines of the same brand but somehow it all comes together seamlessly. The rear profile of the Cliq is as minimalist as the front, with a small rectangular tail lamp mounted below a single piece tubular grab rail at the rear. The tiny rear fender is mounted on the rear panel and houses the number plate.

The instrument console is functional and receives a dual tone layout. The unit displays the analogue dials for speedometer, odometer and fuel gauge and, of course, gets the Auto Headlamp On feature on it as standard. To give more practical usage, the Cliq has a wide footboard and sufficient under-seat storage capacity with a mobile charging socket powered by a maintenance-free battery. And for the first time, Honda has given the scooter block pattern tyres that are said to give extra grip on the patchy rural roads. Honda is also providing accessories such as a front screen, floor cover, box centre, cap cover, rear grip to go that extra mile of convenience.

POWERTRAIN

Like every other scooter in Honda’s stable (barring the flagship Activa 125), the Cliq also sources its power from a four stroke, single cylinder, air cooled, 109.2cc engine, which has been tweaked keeping in view the compulsory BS-IV emission norms. There is nothing in this engine to be doubted for - this ultra-refined and reliable mill equipped with Honda Eco Technology (HET) belts out 8 bhp of power and 9 Nm of torque and comes mated to a belt-driven CVT transmission. It tips the scale at just 102 kilos which make it accessible to both male and female riders.

This engine, which debuted in the Activa almost half a decade back, has proven as an ultra refined and reliable mill with its credentials running once again on the Cliq. With this new update, it now feels slightly perkier in the midrange making it even more of a breeze to ride. Adding in its light-weighted nature, the Cliq has an impressive power to weight ratio, which makes it an enjoyable scooter to ride.

Thanks to the Honda Eco Technology (HET), the claimed fuel efficiency figure for Cliq by Honda is 60 kpl. The top speed of the scooter is rated at 83 kph, which is not too enthusiastic compared to its competition.

RIDE AND HANDLING

Cliq’s unisex design makes is a breeze to ride for both male and female counterparts and the easy clutch less automatic transmission ensures low cost of ownership and a smoother ride. With lower seat height, lighter weight, CLIQ is easy to manoeuvre through dense traffic as well as narrow lanes.

Having a conventional rigid underbone frame under its slim body, the Cliq is enriched with the same setup of trailing link arm suspension at the front and a single-sided hydraulic coil spring at the rear, like the one’s on the Activas’ and the Dios’. The suspension setup is not ground-breaking by any standards resulting in an average ride quality. Given the dated front suspension, the ride over potholes and rough sections become rubbery at times, though the low kerb weight of 102 kg plays its cards once again and makes the Cliq an agile scooter to ride.

Braking duties are via a 130 mm drum unit both at the front as well as the rear and has the Honda’s trademark Combi-Braking System (CBS) with Equaliser safety feature on it as per which both the front as well as rear brakes are applied, whenever the rider applies the rear brake. CLIQ’s special block pattern tires with deep grooves provide extra grip and better control over patchy roads under all weather conditions. These rugged tires are also more durable and have a longer life.

Scooty Zest can be called as the bigger and powerful version of the manufacturer’s existing scooter, Pep. The Scooty Pep has always been the choice among the young girls of the country, and this scooter has initially helped TVS with their sales figures. Though the scooters of this range are usually light and zippy, but this time, Zest comes as a more powerful and practical offering.

The TVS Scooty Zest is powered by a Single cylinder 4 stroke, CVTi air cooled engine which comes with a displacement of 109.7 cc; this is the same unit which also powers the Jupiter and Wego scooters. This engine produces about 7.9 bhp of peak power at 7500 rpm and 8.8 NM of torque at 5500 rpm. TVS Claims that this scooter will return 62 Km to a litre of petrol which is impressive.

Japanese 2 wheeler manufacturer Suzuki had tried their luck and launched two of their finest products in the Indian market which were powered by a 125 cc engine, but somehow, all of them did not win Indian hearts. Then they decided to launch a smaller capacity scooter with an 112 cc displacement. The new scooter is christened as Lets and will compete directly with the other 110 cc scooter in the market like the TVS Wego, Honda Activa, etc.

A single cylinder powers the Suzuki Lets; air cooled four stroke engine with a displacement of 112 cc. The powerplant is capable of producing 8.4 bhp of peak power at 7500rpm and 8.8 Nm of torque at 6500rpm. The engine has been mated to a CVT transmission.

The Suzuki Lets is priced at ₹ 47272 for the mono-tone colour options and ₹ 48272 for the dual tone colour options. All prices are ex-showroom Delhi. You can get one in four colour shades: Pearl Mirage White, Pearl Mira Red Matte Black, Pearl Suzuki Blue Matte Black and Matte Gray Matte Black.

VERDICT

2017 Honda Cliq
- image 529848

The Indian leg of the Japanese brand, Honda 2Wheelers, is targeting a 20% growth in volume and has reportedly invested a tune of ₹ 1600 crore in new capacities and 4 new models it plans to launch in FY-18. They already have captured 89% of the scooter market. The scooter segment saw a commendable 24.67% growth this year while the motorcycles growth stands at a wafer-thin 4.04%. In the last six years alone, the scooter market grew 35% which is why we see Honda launching the Cliq in the existing line-up.

There is hardly any fault with the healthy 109.2cc engine, which scores largely on the fronts of economy and refinement. Given its small dimensions and low weight, it is pretty natural to expect excellent dynamics on the Cliq. At this price, the Honda Cliq is a fair choice for all those who want a functional scooter which serves their daily purpose of transport from point A to point B without any fuss, especially for those semi-urban and rural roads of our country.

Customers can choose from a variety of optional parts including Front Screen, Floor Cover, Box Center, Cap Cover, Rear Grip which would enhance both utility and aesthetics of CLIQ. These parts can be selected individually by the customer and are economically priced.

Ltd. said, “Six out of 10 two wheelers sold in India belong to 100-110cc segment. Within this segment, automatic scooters have witnessed tremendous growth and now count for almost half of the total size. With the highly increasing demand and varied customer needs, this segment is poised to sub segmentation. As the leaders of scooter category, Honda has developed CLIQ which would address the needs of customers with additional value of comfort and convenience.”

Mr. Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice President - Sales and Marketing, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. said, “Focused at up-country customers with a progressive mindset, CLIQ is a perfect blend of Practicality, Versatility and value for money. Breaking the price barrier of automatic transmission on two wheels, only Honda as the market leader in automatic scooters with its unparalleled economies of scale & assured Trust, could challenge traditional preferences by bringing this kind of disruption in the 100-110cc segment.”

‘CLIQ’ Delivers maximum utility with practicality

An industry first in terms of OEM fitment in the 100-110cc 2wheeler category, CLIQ’s special block pattern tires with deep grooves provide extra grip and better control over patchy roads under all weather conditions. These rugged tires are also more durable and have a longer life.

Wide & spacious foot-board, large under-seat storage space and rear carrier (optional) enhance the comfort and utility of increased load carrying capacity.

Honda Reliability & Trust

CLIQ is powered by the trusted 110cc Honda BS-IV HET (Honda Eco Technology) engine, which delivers superb mileage with no compromise in performance. With the engine delivering 5.91 Kw of power and a kerb weight of only 102 kgs, it has one of the best power to weight ratio which makes it extremely exciting to ride.

Ahead of its time, CLIQ comes equipped with Combi Brake System (CBS) with Equalizer technology. (As per Government regulations, CBS will be mandatory on all two-wheelers up to 125cc engine capacity from April 1, 2018). The unique Equalizer in Honda’s advanced Combi Brake System (CBS) distributes braking force proportionately between front and rear wheels simultaneously by pressing just the left lever. This results in reduced braking distance & improved balance, leading to more confident riding compared to conventional braking.

Better comfort with convenience

CLIQ’s unisex design makes it equally comfortable to be ridden by both male and female riders. Far more convenient than using clutch and engaging gears, CLIQ’s automatic transmission ensures low cost of ownership and a smoother ride. The Mobile charging socket ensures that you always remain connected while tubeless tyres, maintenance free battery and viscous air filter adds to the convenience of the rider.
