Bajaj had launched its first variant of its Discover way back in the year 2004, after that Bajaj kept on producing bikes of different ranges under Discover brand and simultaneously gained immense popularity. Bajaj had launched Discover with a displacement of 125cc previously, last year, the company re-vamped the bike and launched it again and christened it as Bajaj Discover 125 ST where ST means Sports Tourer. With this motorcycle, Bajaj has tried to introduce a new concept that is, ‘sports commuter’ with a hope to change the hardcore concept of commuting.

Based with twin spark technology, Bajaj has added Discover 125 ST with a 4 valve, 125 cc air cooled engine which churns out 12.8bhp of power at 9000rpm and 1.1kgm of torque at 7000rpm and its been mated with a 5-speed gearbox. The new model looks much different from the original one and the addition of the new monoshock nitrox suspension at the rear promises to make rides more comfortable. Let us check out whether the ‘evolved’ form of Bajaj Discover 125 is worth so much attention or not.

This is not the first time whenBajaj has done this to its existing motorcycles; we have seen Pulsar 200NS and now its Discover 125 ST. Thankfully, Bajaj have not let itself down with whatever they did to the motorcycles; instead, the bikes became more and more popular. So how is Discover 125 ST different from its previous version? Take a glance at the bike and you’ll notice that the bike looks sportier with the new fairing at the front borrowed from the old Pulsar and Pulsar 200NS and has been merged beautifully to create the look, the round headlamp has been replaced with the new and edgy one. Above the headlamp, there is a tinted visor that looks aerodynamic, the turn indicators have been placed separately in two different pods, and the rear view mirrors are shaped uniquely which looks nice. The front of the bike has got a chiselled shaped mudguard that gives an aggressive look to the front. The instrument cluster of the bike looks simple explaining the fact that cost cutting has been done here and fails to merge with the overall styling; it consists of a large speedometer and a fuel gauge which is a bit disappointing. The fuel tank grabs attention as it has got all the right curves and attractive graphics and the bike follows an all black theme too, the spider alloy wheels look mesmerizing and perhaps the best looking wheels among this segment of bikes. The seat is contoured and is soft and comfortable and has grab rail for its pillion rider, the rear has been given a clean look with an angular tail lamp, the hugger along with the mudguard.

Bajaj’s move to make the bike look sporty and aggressive has been accomplished to a great extent.

Engine and Performance

So now it is time when we learn about the heart of this sporty commuter, as mentioned earlier, Bajaj have loaded Discover 125 ST with a 4 valve, 125 cc air cooled engine which churns out 12.8bhp of power at 9000rpm and 1.1kgm of torque at 7000rpm and is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. If you watch the bike closely, you’ll notice that there are the corrugated engine fins but with a short glance they may appear as straight. Now the question arises that what job does these corrugated fins perform, the answer is - the corrugated engine fins not only aid heat transfer by 28 per cent but also increase the horsepower by 15 per cent and it is expected that Bajaj would be using this feature in future for its other bikes too. Bajaj has given its customers yet another reason to be happy with this bike, because Bajaj has worked on the NVH level too as the bike is meant for long commutes and vibrations cannot be tolerated while such a journey and added to it, the engine has got a paper filter that filters the fuel which would help the bike in the long run.

Let us now focus on the performance of the bike, the engine is refined and powerful, the engine delivers a nice and linear power while the 5-speed gearbox is as light as breeze, smooth and smart altogether. But Bajaj have not forgotten that the bike is meant for city roads and not for highways so the gearing is short at 30kmph and the engine is capable enough to shove past leaving behind the city traffic. The engine feels comfortable too at non-commuting speeds which are ranged in between 60-80kmph. As far as performance is considered, Bajaj Discover 125 ST can throw a nail biting competition to the other bikes of same category.

Ride and Handling

Bajaj Discover 125 ST has a semi double cradle frame with a triangular structure connected by a vertical strut under its skin, and in turn, the bike achieves a good balance between rigidity as well as durability and it acts as a safety feature too. For extreme cornering stiffness, there is a bigger tube cross section for the Swingarm with needle bearings. But the most important thing of this bike is its suspension set up because it is the first ever time for a 125cc bike where a monoshock suspension set up has been used. The front of the bike gets the Telescopic Fork with Anti-friction DU Bush and the rear has the Nitrox Monoshock with gas canister with which the bike feels nice and planted properly. The rigid chasis and the suspension set up altogether gives a nimble approach on the road, it provides the rider with ample comfort and during the ride, you’ll feel confident enough to take on roads full with potholes and bumpers. But the ride would have been better if better tyres were used, The new motorcycle uses the TVS tyres.

The bike has 200mm petal disc at the front which is coupled with the 130mm drums at the rear, the brakes are capable enough to bring the bike to an immediate halt when they are applied, there remains a room for the improvement of the front brakes. Bajaj Discover 125 ST offers you an excellent ride and handling even with a pillion rider on board.

TVS Phoenix is another commuter motorcycle which uses the 125 cc peppy EcoThrust motor and looks quite sporty than any other commuter bikes of its segment. It becomes really hard to compare these two bikes as both of them offers a smooth engine which offers a good NVH levels on the other hand, Bajaj Discover 125 ST offers a great mileage too as well as unmatched performance. Both the bikes cost almost a same price but still we would strongly prefer Bajaj Discover 125 ST over the TVS Phoenix.
The 4engine comparison of both the motorcycles were provided below:

The word ‘evolution’ in terms of automobiles always sound very interesting for us as we expect to see something newer and better, but little do we realize that how much risk factor is this for the company who upgrades their existing vehicles. But Bajaj have certainly done it in a right way and as we know now that Bajaj Discover 125 ST has turned out to be a big hit among the commuter bikes in the market.
Bajaj Discover 125 ST can be called as a bike that has a premium feel of its own. It offers superb mileage, ride and handling along with good looks within a reasonable price. It is not clear whether Bajaj has been able to break the concept of daily commuting to daily sports toured commuter or not but the new Discover 125 ST have won the hearts of Indians for sure. It is expected that Bajaj will keep blessing us with such motorcycles in future also.

“So who does the ST go up against considering the current Discover is already doing well against the competition? If you ignore the slow selling Gladiator 125, the ST does not really have any direct competition. In fact if it does well it will pretty much spawn a Sport Touring commuter segment. It definitely has the goods and Bajaj definitely seems to have another winner on its hands. Pricing however will be a key factor in the ST’s success.” – Zigwheels

“All said and done, the new Discover 125ST rides great, handles well, offers reasonable performance and is likely to conserve your wallet at the pump as well.” - Top Gear India
