Royal Enfield Classic 350 : New vs Old in a classic drag race battle

Which one is quicker - the old Classic 350 or the new 2021 model. The answer lies here

The new Classic 350 makes use of Meteor’s engine and should be faster off the line. But the old one was known for high speed runs. So which one is the winner in this drag race battle?

In this video of old vs new Classic 350, the outcome will surprise you

Although we don’t usually associate ’speed’ and ’acceleration’ with a Royal Enfield, the new range of bikes coming in from the company has improved in these two parameters. The Meteor 350 was the first example and now, using the same engine is the all-new Classic 350. Launched a few weeks back, the bike comes across as a much improved package. However, is it really quicker than the older version? This video by Azam Malick showcases just that..

While both the older and new models come with similar capacity 350cc motors, the new model improves on the power output levels. At 20.2 bhp, the 2021 model produces about 6% more power but most importantly, we are assuming, due to modern day engineering, there will be less power loss on the actual horses coming to the rear wheel. Torque however has gone down by 1 Nm. Both the bikes get a 5-speed manual gearbox but its the tuning and delivery of power that is different. The new model feels peppier and smoother too. Weight of both the bikes is more or less same.

The gap starts widening - seen here is the speedometer of the older Classic 350

In the first race, its clearly visible that the 2021 model takes lead immediately. Infact, by the time the older model hits 60 km/h, the gap between both the bikes is huge. However, post 100 km/h, as seen in the video, the widening gap reaches it saturation point. The older bike has been known for holding high speeds in a good manner and the speedometer display showcases the same story. While the 2021 model refuses to go past 125 km/h, the older model starts kissing the 130 mark.

Old model finally overtakes due to a higher top speed. Surprise!

Both the riders exchange the motorcycles for the second run. The launch is perfect but yet again the new Classic 350 takes the lead here, hitting the 60 and 100 mark in a quicker manner. But the gap this time isn’t that long and the riders decide to hold on to the throttle for a longer duration. This is where the older bike starts gaining in on the 2021 model and eventually overtakes it too. We feel that this down to the gearing and the new model might not have a higher top speed. Surprised, even we are!

Please note that we do not advocate such riding on public roads. If you ever wish to attempt a drag race, do it in a controlled environment and with full riding gears. Ride safe and ride responsibly always.
