• 2014 Mahindra Gusto

A scooter fully developed at the Mahindra R&D division located on the outskirts of Pune definitely attracted everyone’s attention while it was being tested on the Indian roads. Mahindra is calling their new product Gusto a global scooter because beside India it will also be sold in other International markets,Mahindra who started their two wheeler division back in the year 2008 is comparatively a new player in this business compared to its rivals like the Honda, TVS etc, although they already have some popular products in this segment like the Duro DZ, Kine and Flyte but their new product Gusto is definitely is a new product which has been built from scratch because it is based on a completely new platform while the engine is also new and the figure suggests that it is definitely one peppy unit.

Now Mahindra launched this scooter already in the Indian market at an attractive introductory price but Indian scooter market and the consumer’s mentality has changed a lot because they have plenty of choices mostly in the 110 cc segment and thus they now look for a contender which will provide an impressive all round performance while returning an impressive fuel economy, it definitely also has to look good and handle properly while also bringing in practicality with it. Now those are really some tough criteria to fulfill but the competition from various two wheeler brands has left the two wheeler manufacturer with no choice but to enter the rat race and experiment and try to overtake other by providing the best all round product.

The Gusto name has derived from the word ‘Gust’ which means a sudden strong current of wind which symbolizes the spirit of freedom. Powered by a 4 Stroke, Air cooled, 109.6 cc engine the scooter promises to bring performance along with practicality with it.

Take a first look at the Mahindra Gusto and it may not blow your mind away but Mahindra has their own customer base who loves little rugged looking scooters than the fancy ones. Gusto too is one tough looking scooter which also brings some fresh new styling elements with it.

At the front you will notice the bright halogen headlamp unit with LED lamps which also acts as pilot lamps the front apron of the scooter looks kind of strange and never seen before we specially loved those air vents styling just on top of the side turn indicators. The rear view mirrors are placed in a good position which definitely looks good and surely will provide good visibility to the person riding the scooter. The instrument panel looks quite unattractive and especially those plastic panels look seriously odd which separates the fuel indicator and the high and low beam lights. However the rider will get an impressive amount of leg space and the credit goes to the long wheelbase of the scooter.

The seats too look comfortable and one important thing is that it comes with segment first height adjustable seats Yes! Just like a 4 wheeler the rider of the scooter can also adjust the height of their scooters seat according to their comfort. The wide grab rail at the rear will definitely come handy for the pillion, we specially loved the rear tail lamps, for your information no it does not comes with a LED lamps. The exhaust gets a heat shield which definitely will protect the pillion’s foot. Two other things which attracted out attention are the remote flip key which comes with a torch and a guide me operating switches which when pressed flashed the indicators of the scooter for easy locating the scooter, there is also an inbuilt torch which definitely comes in handy while searching for the keyhole during the dark.

Wheelbase 1275 MM

This Mahindra Gusto is powered by a newly developed four-stroke, 109.6cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine which produces about 8 bhp of peak power at 7500 rpm and 9 Nm of torque at 5500 rpm. This engine has been mated to a CVT transmission. You all can guess that this engine has been developed by Mahindra so expect it to be smooth and responsive; the motor has been composed of an all aluminum unit. Mahindra has used all the advanced technology to reduce friction.

What is a big letdown for the scooter is the fact that it weighs slightly more than other scooters of its segment at around 120 Kilograms which will affect its maneuverability slightly specially for the female riders and the heavy weight will also take a toll on the overall fuel efficiency figures of the scooter.

The Gusto uses an Underbone Steel Type, Tubular chassis which definitely makes this scooter an impressive handler. It uses a Telescopic with Air Spring suspension setup at its front and Coil type, Hydraulic suspension at its rear which hopeffuly will be able handle Indian roads with ease.

The scooter also comes with tubeless tyres which will make long journeys little less troublesome. Unfortunately the Gusto only comes with drum type brakes and there is absolutely no option of a disc brakes which definitely is a big letdown for this scooter.

The Gusto too is not different it definitely is one practical scooter which may not be a looker but brings with it some segment first features with it.
