In 2016, Aprilia did something unbelievable for the Indian two-wheeler market by launching a mass oriented scooter SR 150. This was an ‘out-of-the-blues’ decision for a superbike maker like Aprilia, which is known for motorcycles that cost at least ₹ 20 lakh and upwards, thus targeting itself towards a niche audience. However, with the SR 150, Aprilia has widened its base and has created an all new segment of performance oriented scooters in India for the mass market buyers.

Touted to be the sportiest and fun-to-ride scooter to ever step into the Indian mass market for scooters, the SR 150 carries a lot on its shoulder, as it also is the very first model from Aprilia in the sub-1 lakh segment. And the scooter has been accepted with open hands in India, which is the reason why despite very limited sales network across India, the scooter has churned up some pretty impressive numbers.

To continue the momentum, Aprilia has launched a limited edition version of the scooter titled as SR 150 Race, which comes with some cosmetic as well as mechanical changes over its regular version. Here’s is a comprehensive review of the all new Aprilia SR 150 Race:-

The word ‘scooter’ was once a synonym for one cluttery low power thing that had two wheels and a handlebar. A device that to this day is frowned upon in the motorcycle community and blaming it for taking away the ‘biking experience’.

The only thing making it tick and stay is its ease of riding around the urban chaos and for people for whom shifting a gear is a daunting task to undertake. See the pun there? It’s there on purpose.

However, things started to change in 2016. It saw the entry of two 150cc Italian scooters which take the two-wheel game to a whole new level. They were onto mucking about the boring geared entry level motorcycles in full zest, style and a mountain full of panache.

Piaggio introduced the decade’s first 150 cc scooter with the Vespa SXL 150 and set the ball rolling. Then came a machine from the same bloodline, but with racing written all over it, the Aprilia SR 150. Both scooters share the same capacity engine and this is where the similarities end. The rest of is chalk and cheese.

A few days back we had featured the sinister looking BMW HP4 RACE. It is an advanced prototype of the power star, the S 1000RR-HP4 with full carbon fibre twin-spar main frame and rims that are made in the same factory that makes components for BMW’s iconic ‘i-series’ and 7 series of cars. It is a purposeful hand built by the blokes at BMW.

To build this exotic machine dripping with carbon fibre lust will feel like, considering their vast amount or resources and experience, an easy-peasy task for BMW, with regards to what is coming next.

Carbon fibre has been considered the most exotic material ever since McLaren first made use of it to build a monocoque chassis for its Formula One car, 35 years ago. And so did Rolf van der Heide, a Dutch engineer who had worked for Spyker and Carver (makers of three-wheeled road machines) in the past, saw endless possibilities of carbon fibre composites and went on to create the motorcycle of his dreams with it.

With his brother Sjors handling the business end and industrial designer Michiel, the ‘Gentleman’s Racer’ was born. With a 100% carbon fibre monocoque chassis, a 100% carbon fibre swing arm, a 100% carbon fibre front end and a patent pending revolutionary designed suspension system, we see this as a genesis of a new breed of mankind who is not scared witless to venture into the realm reserved only for the upper-crust.

Recently, we had featured a piece where the Austrian Orange is readying its production motorcycle of the MotoGP-spec KTM RC16 for 2018. It boasted a massive 240 bhp power mill and all of us blew the trumpets with joy.

With regards to what is coming up, that RC16 might feel a little soft and supple.

A couple of years ago Aprilia Racing christened its ‘Factory Works’ project which allowed customers to get access to their special, high-performance machines. It is the most advanced development, innovation and experimentation platform that began life as the extraordinary RSV4. It was the single most exciting thing to come out of the 2015 EICMA convention which got every moto aphrodisiac’s blood racing.

The first iteration from the Noale-based manufacturer was the Aprilia RSV4 R-FW ‘Misano’ which was showcased at the 2015 EICMA. It demonstrated the level of possibility that the Factory Works machine can dispatch. A monstrous performance motorbike while maintaining elevated overall balance and reliability.

From then on, Aprilia has been evolving and getting in the best of technology into their superbike and superstock machines. And for 2017, they have updated their ultimate offering with a 250 bhp Aprilia RSV4 R FW-GP. The nearest one can get to the MotoGP experience.

Along with this, customers can also get their hands on three different mods that suit their expectations and are compliant with Superstock and Superbike Championship regulations in each country it will be put to test. And each of them will carry various levels of chassis, engine and electronic preparations with a maximum configuration that exceeds 200 bhp.

The year 2016 is coming towards an end and what a year it has been for the automotive industry in India. If statistics are to be believed, India is in the highest rankings in terms of growing economy. People have started investing in higher range of motorcycles that are lauded in the performance and engineering arena. More and more players started entering the Indian subcontinent to showcase their entry level performance machines. It just didn’t stop there. Players in India also fired all their pistons to go head to head with their foreign counterparts.

Since 1955, the year when the first batch of motorcycles in India were manufactured by Royal Enfield of United Kingdom, put together in Madras (Chennai), the motorcycle industry in the country has grown mountains with its own share of valleys. And somewhere in between promising players emerged within and managed to live up to the expectations and more. Today they are capable of producing motorcycles that beam innovation and technology acumen at the highest standards giving the competition a run for their money.

The CNBC-TV18 OVERDRIVE Awards have been one of the few coveted award ceremonies where every manufacturer wants to grab top honours. This has been the way since the beginning of this century and is the only one held in association with all the apex industry bodies (CII, SIAM and ACMA). Every year these awards recognise achievements in multiple categories across the automotive galaxy. For things having two wheels, there are six categories of awards and the process of identifying these awards includes a jury consisting of members of the media house and experts in their respective fields.

If you leave the last decade aside, the Indian two wheeler market was not that revolutionary place which it is today. Opposite to the current times which have seen a lot of segments brewing in the market, there was a time when the Indian audience had limited options to choose from, especially in the scooter category. What we were left to choose from, were a handful of choices which were purely meant for the daily commutes of the masses.

Not now, as those times when only 100cc scooters were available in India have gone. The scenario of today has changed completely, and what we have today is a range of 150cc scooters as well, leave alone the segment of 125cc scooters. In a market which was too conventional to accept a 150cc scooter, is now making all the major two wheeler makers to think about giving the Indians a taste of their 150cc or bigger offerings to Indian audience.

In this feature story, we are going to throw some light on a handful of 150cc or bigger scooters available in India, which are currently few in number, but then, considering their prowess and market image, we can expect other manufacturers to follow their foot-steps as well. It is because of these four 150cc+ products, that we can hear rumors or confirmations of 150cc or bigger scooters from other major manufacturers as well.
