According to Ducati, if the erstwhile Scrambler wouldn’t have been discontinued back then, it would have evolved in the same form as the latest avatar of the Scrambler has emerged. The Scrambler brand has already garnered much praises for being simple and stylish at the same time. The motorcycle does bring back the charm of the bygone eras, without going too overboard with the theme. As said before, out of all the versions of the Scrambler, the Classic happens to be the most retro looking one, thanks to the old school equipment it comes fitted with. Unlike the more sophisticated and modern versions of the Scrambler introduced till date, the Scrambler Classic is the simple looking of them all.

At the front, the Scrambler Classic is adorned with a round headlamp with LED daytime running lights within it, which is segmented into four parts, thus making the front face of the motorcycle look aggressive. The motorcycle gets a chopped front fender, which gets a premium looking aluminium finish. The rear view mirrors are large and functional and are the only parts on the motorcycle which look as if they have been shared from a modern day motorcycle, owing to their sharp and busy design.
When viewed from the sideways, the body panels of the Scrambler Classic looks exactly the same as the other versions. It is a simple looking unit which does get aluminium covers on both the sides, thus adding some character to its design. The motorcycle has been fitted with a long single piece brown colored vintage seat, which looks sizeable enough to accommodate two full sized adults with ease. It also comes with an aluminium stripe under it, adding some character to it. The side mounted single exhaust, belt covers and heat covers too are made up of aluminium, which distinguishes it from other versions of the motorcycle. The spoke wheels at both the ends accentuate its retro appeal even more.

At the rear, the Scrambler Classic gets a full-fledged aluminium finished rear fender, which looks curvaceous and houses the number plate holder at the end of it. The LED tail lamp here is tucked under the seat and looks sandwiched between the end of the seat and rear fender. Another interesting feature of the Scrambler Classic is the presence of an under-seat USB port, adding some more utility to the motorcycle.
The fully digital instrument console on the Scrambler Classic has been shared with the rest of the versions of Ducati Scrambler, without any single difference. This round-shaped unit has digital readouts for speedometer, tachometer, fuel guage, trip meters, odometer, clock, gear indicator and temperature gauge. Like the overall design, the switchgear of the motorcycle too has an air of simplicity to it.

POWERTRAIN

The design of the Scrambler Classic is evocative of the original Scramblers of ‘60s, but under the skin, it is a twenty-first century Ducati by every bit. It is powered by an L-twin Desmodromic fuel-injected 803cc engine, which pumps out 75 bhp of power and 68 Nm of torque. This is the same engine which used to thrust the Ducati Monster 796 as well, though for the Scrambler Classic, the cams are slightly redesigned in order to achieve a more usable top-end power. The engine channels the power produced to the rear wheel through a six-speed gearbox.

Unlike its other stable mates, the nature of this engine is not furious, but it’s a beast in disguise. The engine surprises you with its immediate power delivery as and when required, but otherwise it’s a calm engine which doesn’t feel wild when ridden sedately. It has been tuned in order to deliver a healthy top-end power, with adequate low-end and mid-range grunt.

RIDE AND HANDLING

Like all other Ducatis, the Scrambler Classic too sits atop a tubular Trellis frame. The high-raised handlebar and rear set foot-pegs may not make up a comfortable riding posture together, but they definitely manage to raise the fun factor with the sporty super-moto like seating posture. Being a slim motorcycle and weighing at 186 kgs only, the Scrambler Classic is one nimble motorcycle which manages to bring a smile on your face every time you wring its throttle.

Ducati has provided the Scrambler Classic with 41mm upside down forks at front and pre-load adjustable side mounted monoshock – both sourced from Kayaba. A 330mm single disc brake at front and a 245mm disc brake at rear, coupled with ABS, are employed to bring the motorcycle to rest from motion. Except the ABS, there is no other electrical wizardry, which makes the Scrambler Classic an unadulterated motorcycle to ride.

PRICING

Unlike in most of the European countries, Ducati has only four versions of the Scrambler on sale in the Indian market, with the Scrambler Classic being one of them. Currently, the Scrambler Classic is being retailed by Ducati at a starting price of Rs. 7.61 lakh, making it more expensive than the Scrambler Icon, equally expensive as the Scrambler Full Throttle and less expensive than the Scrambler Urban Enduro. Like in other countries, the motorcycle will be available in the single paint shade of yellow with aluminium inserts and a dark brown colored seat as standard.

COMPETITION

Being an entry-level as well as retro offering from Ducati, the closest and most obvious rival of the Scrambler Classic will be the Triumph Bonneville T100. Having the same classic and old-world charm of a retro roadster from yesteryears with a glorious history beneath its name, the Triumph Bonneville T100 is powered by a 900cc liquid-cooled, parallel twin engine which produces 55 PS of power and 80 Nm of torque.

On the front of looks, the Triumph Bonneville is easily the classier among the two, with its retro and classic lines staying true to the original Bonneville, unlike the Scrambler Classic, which looks more modernized in comparison. Also, the character of both the motorcycles is pretty different – while the core strengths of the Bonneville T100 lies in its bottom-end and mid-range performance, the Scrambler Classic loves to be revved hard, with its impressive performance at higher revs.

CONCLUSION

Like all the other Scramblers, the Scrambler Classic may seem to be a completely different Ducati when viewed with other motorcycles of Ducati’s stable, considering the fact that unlike other Ducatis, it can offer a proper off-road experience and on-road manners in a single package. In comparison with the other versions of the Scrambler, it is easily the classiest to look, given the design cues like spoke wheels, aluminium inserts and brown colored vintage seat on offer. It certainly has that edgy and outrageous feel one expects from a Ducati, and a deeper introspection reveals that it stays true to the core of specific DNAs of all Ducatis as well – it is beautiful, it is powerful and it is soulful. The Scrambler Classic emerges as an equally enticing machine for both amateurs as well as seasoned riders, and being one of the most affordable Ducatis on sale right now, the desirability of it increases even more.
