Now Volvo hasn’t actually tested this new safety system from any other safety rating programme but instead they have actually tested this safety feature on Volvo’s very own test tracks. Volvo claims that after they introduced their modern safety features in cars the risk of being killed or severely injured has been reduced by two third compared to the car back in the 1970’s, however the automaker was still not able to reduce the risks caused to the spine by various accidents.

Thus to collect real life data Volvo cars tested the new safety technology with the help of three crash test methods namely ‘Ditch’, ‘Airborne’ and ‘Rough terrain’ which actually helped them to collect all the data related to different kind of runoff road scenarios.

2014 Volvo XC90

2014 Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 is in desperate needs of an upgrade. Volvo’s flagship off-roader has virtually remained unchanged since 2002. That’s when it first arrived on the scene and since then apart from a few attempts to refresh the ageing design, little has been done.

The new generation XC90 is expected to be launched by the end of 2014 or by early next year. Now, except for our local market, Volvo offers a range of engines including a V-8 on the XC90. In India, we only get a D5 Turbocharged diesel with 200 horsepower and 420 Nm. Of course, all-wheel drive has been an integral part of the XC90 since its conception.

So how does this ageing Volvo compare with rivals like the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class, BMW X5 or the Audi Q7? If you look at the ratio of XC90s sold to the number of SUVs sold by the Germans in a year, it is clear that Volvo is struggling to keep up with the Mercs and Beemers.

All new XC90 coming in 2014. S60 getting facelift this year

As far as India is concerned there is reason for Volvo to celebrate. From the potion that they find themselves in now, totally and completely dominated by the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi, Volvo can only hope to improve. Despite having some nice and well engineered products like the XC60 and the S60, Volvo’s aren’t just selling. At the ongoing Detroit Motor Show its new boss, Hakan Samuelsson told Autocar UK magazine that 8 of its 9 models will be significantly updated in the next 12 months.

The XC90 SUV will get a completely new model next year and it will be the first Volvo to use the manufacturers all new ‘Scaleable Platform Architecture.’ This new platform will form the basis of all further Volvo’s upwards the S60.

Volvo’s share in 2012 decreased from 2011 and according to its boss Volvo is planning to develop a small car platform of its own to replace the current one which is derived from Ford.

The S60 will receive an update in the next 12 months and theV40 is which considered an important car for Volvo would make it into India to compete with the likes of the BMW 1-series and the recently launched Mercedes B-class. Another significant announcement coming out from Detroit is Volvo’s ambitions to develop an engine line-up of 4 cylinder engines which are expected to deliver performance of a 6 cylinder but with remarkably low fuel efficiency.

Helping Volvo bridge the gap to BMW and the other German manufacturers would be the 1.2 billion dollar loan from the China Development Bank and this loan not only helps Volvo repay its debt but also finance the investment.

Volvo just doesn’t have the same draw for the Indian buyer which explains why their cars haven’t got the same attention as the German luxury manufacturers. That doesn’t mean that Volvo makes poor cars. Their marketing hasn’t been aggressive enough to challenge its competitors and the products also haven’t been strong enough to make the consumers consider a Volvo over a Merc. The XC90 is Volvo’s biggest SUV and the manufacturer gave it a facelift in 2011. With a starting price of Rs 44,90,011 ex-showroom new Delhi, the SUV is available with both diesel and petrol engines.
