Volvo surely is taking some big steps for the Indian market; they recently introduced their new products here including the S90, S60 Cross Country and the flagship XC90. Now the latest reports suggest that they will also be adding their performance sub-brand Polestar here as well.

For those who don’t know just like Mercedes has its AMG, BMW has their M lineup Volvo too has their performance brand Polestar which builds performance cars based on their current product list. We always loved Volvo cars for their advanced safety features, sturdy build quality and luxury features. Although nobody preferred the Swedish car maker before, it certainly started getting appreciation now mainly for their modern designs and luxury features and advanced technologies.

Volvo has plans to introduce the Polestar performance brand this April 2017 and the first car which will be launched here will be the S60 Polestar. Although the sedan looks quite ferocious it also has got the subtle touch to it which is its unique point. So without any further due let us get straight to the point.

The S60 Polestar like we said does not look as intimidating as its other performance oriented German rivals but it does get a new set of slightly more aggressive looking bumpers towards the front. These bumpers get a piano finish accents towards the lower lip; the LED daytime running lamps are positioned towards the lower front bumper instead of headlamps. According to Volvo the front splitter on the front bumper has been designed purposefully to increase downforce. Apart from the changes to the front profile the Polestar variant also gets bigger and sportier 20-inch wheels towards the side profile. The rear, on the other hand, gets an integrated spoiler. The redesigned bumper also gets a piano black finish to it. The twin exhausts at the rear too look equally impressive and add a sporty feel to the sedan. To differentiate the Polestar car from the standard model there is also a Polestar badge on the front grille and rear profile as well.

The Cyan Blue exterior finish is definitely the most attractive colour you will find in the Polestar S60.

Just like the exterior the interior of the S60 Polestar variant also gets subtle updates as well to differentiate it from the standard variant. The seat gets new upgraded upholstery and Polestar badges. The other changes come in the form of a new Polestar door sills and aluminium foot pedals. The seats also gets a centre arm rests as well covered in high-quality leather. The steering wheel and the seats gets Blue stitching on them as well. The dashboard looks identical to the standard S60 the only difference comes in the form of the centre console finished with Carbon fibre.

Talk about equipment list and the S60 does not disappoint anyone at all, the performance sedan gets a 7-inch MMI, dual zone climate control, informative three-pod instrument cluster, three different adjustments for steering wheel, etc.

Coming to the most important part the drivetrain, while the previous car used to be powered by a 3.0 Liter six-cylinder unit the updated model on the other hand now uses a downsized 2.0 Liter, 4-Cylinder, Supercharged & Turbocharged, Direct Injection unit which produces about 362 hp of peak power at 7000 rpm and 467 Nm of torque in between 3100 - 5100 Rpm. The engine paired to an 8-speed Geartronic Automatic Transmission which sends power to all the four wheels at the same time. The gearbox has been tuned to deliver the right amount of response and feedback. The gearbox manages the shifts quite well be it for optimal engine response or smooth driving experience and highest fuel efficiency. Although the engine has been downsized, but this 2.0 Litre unit now gets a bigger turbocharger and intake along with a new camshaft and larger fuel pumps.

Talk about performance and surely this performance car does not disappoint when it comes to figures the S60 Polestar is capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h mark in 4.7seconds claims Volvo. The best thing is that the car is also able to return impressive overall fuel efficiency figures of 12.8 kmpl.

Engine 2.0 Liter, 4-Cylinder, Supercharged & Turbocharged, Direct Injection
Drivetrain All-Wheel-Drive
Horsepower 362 hp
Horsepower Rev 7000 rpm
Torque 347 lb-ft
Torque Rev 3100 - 5100 rpm

Volvo S60 underpins a reworked chassis which is actually lowered by 15 mm; it also gets springs which are 15% stiffer as well. The front strut base also has been tuned for more road-hugging control. The steering wheel, in particular, has three different settings which include soft, medium and hard. The stiffened suspension system helps the car to be more stable and composed at high speeds. The S60 Polestar also gets Brembo 6 Piston 14.6" Front Ventilated and 11.6 Rear Ventilated & Slotted Brakes for stopping. The 20-inch wheels are wrapped with Michelin Pilot Super Sport 245/35 ZR20 (95Y) XL Performance Summer Tires which might be different for the Indian market.

Expect the S60 Polestar to hit the Indian market in the month of April 2017. As far as the pricing goes, the S60 Polestar will be priced around INR. 65-75 Lakhs ex, showroom.

Mercedes launched the C63 AMG last year in India. The new coupe Powered by a 3.0 Litre V6 Twin Turbo unit which is capable of producing about 367 Hp of peak power and 520 NM of torque. The engine paired to a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission which sends power to the four wheels of the car via the 4MATIC four-wheel drive system. The car is capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h mark in 4.7 seconds while the top speed is limited to 250 km/h mark. The engine being powerful is also fuel efficient at the same time because it also gets ECO start/stop function and the ’sailing’ function which helps reduce fuel consumption.

There is no doubt in the fact that the Volvo S60 Polestar with all the mechanical changes over the standard model makes it a truly exciting and engaging car to drive. The car is not too aggressive which makes it a reliable ride. Off course further boost to the interior would have done things slightly more attractive. Nonetheless for those who are looking for an alternative to the German cars can surely get their hands on this upcoming performance oriented sedan from a brand who are known to build some of the safest cars in the world.
