The same S60 sedan with occasional offroading skills

We are all familiar with the Crossover hatchback and perhaps have plenty of them flooding the Indian market but the idea of a sedan based Crossover is totally new for everybody. One such manufacturer who has been known to experiment a lot has surely surprised us all when they showcased a Cross Country version of their S60 sedan at the 2015 Geneva Auto show.

Volvo introduced the Cross Country brand back in the year 1997 and the first product that came out from the brand was the V70 Cross Country, later Volvo also launched some beefed up variants of the V40, V60 and the V70 which helped Volvo expand their Cross Country lineup further. Coming to the S60 Cross Country, this four door soft roader has an increased ride height and some added lower body cladding to gives it the jacked up appearance. The S60 Cross Country even has been fitted with high profile tyres which gives this sedan a smooth ride when the terrain is not particularly friendly.

According to the Volvo officials their latest invention even has “a completely unique expression of adventure and all-road readiness in a distinctly sporty and stylish package,” Volvo already launched their V40 Cross Country in the Indian market which is a hatchback possessing a Crossover stance and although it was not able to pull the crowd like its rival the BMW X1 but still it is one worthy and capable vehicle. On the other hand the new S60 Cross Country surely has opened an entire new side in the automotive world and also will motivate other auto brands to experiment with their products and come up with some new ideas in the near future.

The S60 Cross Country will be available with both diesel and petrol drivetrains and you can find every detail once you go through the article.

Nothing much has changed in this new S60 Cross Country, be it its overall proportion or its exterior styling. The Cross Country variant looks identical to the standard S60 sedan but what has really changed is its character after few interesting additions.

what has really changed is its character after few interesting additions

The S60 was known to be one popular sedan but the S60 CC definitely looks more muscular and the credit goes to the added lower body cladding which also protects the lower body of the sedan. Beside that the ride height of this Cross Country variant has also been increased by almost 2.5 Inches so that the car can handle offroads and uneven terrain with ease. Now the car’s ground clearance stands at 201 mm. Apart from all that the addition of side skirts also makes the sedan appear more rugged and helps it bringing out the adventurous side of the sedan. The S60 Cross Country will also offer both 18 and 19 inch wheels which were fitted with high profile tyres which will not only add comfort to the ride but also will be able to handle any terrain and road conditions.

All this small but effective addition to the standard S60 sedan has helped in giving birth to the more rugged, dynamic sporty and adventurous Crossover variant.

Volvo hasn’t revealed much about the interior details of the S60 Cross Country yet but do not expect a lot of change inside either but because this is a completely different variant thus expect certain interesting changes which perhaps will be made keeping in mind the overall theme and character of the Crossover sedan. You can expect a completely new instrument cluster and beside that also expect lot of high quality leather, wood and even aluminum trims to be thrown here and there to give the cabin more modern and make it appear slightly different than the standard S60 sedan.

The S60 Cross Country unlike its S60 sedan variant will not be available with plenty of engine options though; the most powerful T5 variant will be powered by a 2.5 Litre 5 Cylinder petrol unit which will generate about 250 Hp of peak power and an impressive 350 Nm of torque. This variant will also get the all wheel drive which will surely do justice to the S60 Cross Country with all the power. While there will also be a 190 Hp front wheel drive variant too on offer with the D4 base variant which actually based on Volvo’s Drive-E powertrain architecture. Volvo promises that this powertrain wont sacrifice on efficiency as well as performance.

The S60 Cross Country sedan has been launched with a 2.4 Litre, 5 cylinder, turbocharged diesel unit which is capable of producing about 187 Bhp of peak power and 420 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a 6 speed automatic transmission which actually sends power to all the four wheels.

The S60 Cross Country although has the advantage of occasional offroading skills because of its impressive ground clearance but in real life situation it is a direct rival of the Mercedes Benz C Class. The S60 Cross Country surely will help adding the extra bit of oomph and fun to theS60 sedan. We all know that this is definitely not a hardcore offroader but it surely can handle bit of rough road now that it has an increased ground clearance which surely will help it overcome some hurdle on its way and we do believe that those high profile tyres will help keep the occupants comfortable inside by providing a smooth ride but that is all. As far as the rest of the car is concerned it definitely comes loaded with plenty of cool gadgets and features to make it appear more loaded than the standard S60 sedan.
