2012 Volkswagen Tiguan

2012 Volkswagen Tiguan

If the cars we’re today driving mirror who we really are, it probably suggests that we’re now becoming more and more confused and want a bit too much. A more positive spin would be that we have now evolved as a more practical lot and want our cars to be that too. How else would you describe cars like theVolkswagen Tiguan. Is it s SUV, a crossover, a softroader or a hatch with more than average ground clearance. VW for some time now has been looking at the possibility of getting the Tiguan into India but for some reason that has been delayed. Like the Skoda Yeti, the Tiguan offers the practicality of a family car with a bit of off road potential. With this Golf based vehicle VW believes that it has managed to mix the versatility that a utility offers with the dynamic ability of the hatch. We could well get the Tiguan in India next year and if VW could assemble the car in India rather than importing it as a completely built unit, prices for this utility vehicle could start from around 17lakhs which puts it in theSkoda Yeti territory.

Volkswagen Tiguan to challenge Toyota Fortuner in India

Volkswagen Tiguan to challenge Toyota Fortuner in India

According to a report from Auto-motor-und-sport, the next generation Volkswagen Tiguan will challenge the Toyota Fortuner in emerging markets. The latest Tiguan was first unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and is based on Volkswagen’s flexible MQB platform that underpins most VW cars like the Passat. Like the Fortuner the Tiguan too is a seven seater and would cost around 22lakhs.

The new Tiguan is more beefed up compared to the model it replaces sitting 55cm higher than the current version. The wheelbase has also been extended by 15-20cm. While there is no word on the engines that the SUV might use, we expect it to use both the TDI and TSI engines from VW. For the international market the SUV might also get a plug-in hybrid variant.

The 2012 Tiguan has a revised a new front fascia which uses the German automaker’s new corporate face and incorporates an attractive set of LED running lamps similar to the Touareg. There is also a twin double-bar grille and the SUV uses a new XDS locking differential system along with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox.

VW has designed its SUV to target the youth and while the Tiguan won’t match the off-road ability of the Fortuner, it is more stylish to look at. Reports have also come out suggesting that Skoda would too be rolling out an SUV in the likes of the Tiguan based on the same MBQ platform.

The Toyota Fortuner was launched in India in 2009. Based on the Hilux pick-up truck, the Fortuner has been a big success in India and in March this year Toyota sold nearly 1400 Fortuners. A facelift version of the Fortuner was launched at the New Delhi Auto Expo earlier this year and the Fortuner now comes with both an automatic and manual gearbox. When launched, the VW Tiguan will also compete with the likes of the Chevrolet Captiva, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Endeavour and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
