VW Polo GT TSI With 1.8 Litre Mill Spotted Again (Spy Shots)

Is this actually true that Volkswagen will be launching the more powerful GTI variant of the Polo in India? The Polo GTI was once again spotted on the Indian roads and was not covered in camouflage which gave us the clear view of this hatchback and also raises the possibility of its launch in India.

The reason behind why Volkswagen wants to launch this hatchback is quite clear to us now; this will be a premium offering from the German auto giant and will take on the Abarth 595 Competizione which was launched recently. The 2015 Polo GTI not only gets cosmetic upgrades to its exterior but also in its interior as well. Under the hood this small hatch has a massive heart; the Polo GTI is powered by a 1.8 Litre unit. This 1.8 Litre, 4 cylinder, Turbocharged unit is the same engine which is also used under the hood of the Skoda Octavia, this gasoline power mill can produce about 187 Bhp of peak power and an impressive 320 Nm of torque, the engine has received a bump in its power recently and it actually also replaces the smaller 1.4 Litre unit. Expect the 1.8 Litre unit to be paired to a 6 speed manual gearbox which actually is good news, while in the International market this comes mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox.

Coming to the exterior cosmetic changes that we noticed in this new powerful hatchback includes LED headlamps with differently styled LED DRLs, while the honeycomb grille towards the front also gets GTI logo. The front bumper as you can notice gets bigger air intakes gives you an idea of its aggressive nature. Moving to the side profile of this hatchback although most of it remains unchanged but you will get bigger 17 inch alloy wheels and added side skirts with this variant. Towards the rear profile this hot hatch gets an aggressive rear bumper and an exposed duel exhaust tip. Although the interior has not been snapped here but we do expect few extra goodies inside which might come in the form of sportier seats and touchscreen infotainment system.

2015 Volkswagen Polo GT

Volkswagen recently launched the facelifted versions of the GT TSI and the GT TDI. The top end GT Polo’s are the go faster versions of the regular Polo. The company first launched these cars in 2013. Then later they came out with Polo GT TDI that came with a diesel engine taken from the Volkswagen Vento.

Volkswagen to launch Polo facelift soon

Volkswagen to launch Polo facelift soon

Volkswagen showcased the facelifted Polo at the 2014, Geneva motor show. No drastic changes have been made to the Polo apart from a slight cosmetic upgrade and a new engine.

Now, VW India has been keen to launch the updated car in India. It is now believed that the company could announce the launch of the car sometime in July of 2014. Volkswagen will offer a new down-sized engine on the new Polo. The 1.6-liter TDI unit has been reduced in capacity to 1.5-liters. That said, power and torque numbers have remained the same as before. So, the new smaller TDI unit will be good for 105 PS and 250 Nm of torque. Also, the fact that the displacement has been reduced, the engine would now burn less fuel. The fuel economy would be further enhanced by the ultra-slick DSG dual-clutch transmission. Perhaps, Volkswagen might discontinue the 1.2-liter TDI altogether

Pricing for the new updated Volkswagen Polo will only be revealed at launch. we expect the prices to remain roughly the same. Today, the base Polo is priced at INR 4.99 lakh.

Base Volkswagen Polo model sales to resume at a later date

Base Volkswagen Polo model sales to resume at a later date

Not too long ago, Volkswagen India decided to make airbags standard on some of their models. The decision came in the wake of recent Global NCAP crash test results wherein the regulator had released a report of a handful of Indian hatchback cars. Folks at Global NCAP had tested small hatches like the Tata Nano, Ford Figo, Hyundai i10 and Maruti Alto 800 for crash safety. All these reputed brands failed the tests miserably putting a question mark on the safety for Indian cars.

Almost all them failed to pass the test except for one. The Volkswagen Polo was deemed the safest car thanks to its tough build and safety features like airbags, etc.

Now, unfortunately the base model of the Polo in India does not come with an airbag and the company wants to keep their good safety record by offering its customers with various active and passive life-saving features. Hence, Volkswagen has decided to the pull the base Polo out of their dealerships for now.

Thus VW dealers across the country have stopped taking bookings for the base model Polo until, Volkswagen installs airbags into the entry-level Polo, the base model will not return to showrooms.

2014 Volkswagen Cross Polo

Well, it’s not the most popular model in Volkswagen India’s portfolio but there have sufficient takers of the Cross Polo. The Cross Polo, as you know is a compact crossover based on the Polo hatchback. The model was launched in India last year. Previous attempts to sell a similar product in the form of the Skoda Fabia Scout hadn’t gone well.

That said, Volkswagen decided to go ahead with the Cross Polo, replacing its sister car. Now, at the 2014 Geneva motor show, Volkswagen will launch a facelift version of the Cross Polo. The same will make its way into India as well. However, the Polo- the car on which the Cross is based on will be the first in line to receive the facelift.

Volkswagen hikes Polo, Vento prices

Volkswagen hikes Polo, Vento prices

Volkswagen today announced a hike in the prices of the Polo hatchback and Vento sedan from February 1, 2014. The decision comes as the rupee continues its downward slide compared with the U.S. dollar. Manufacturing costs have also gone up and hence the price hike, explains Volkswagen.

Volkswagen India has decided to hike the price of their products by as much as 2.7 percent due to the aforementioned reasons. However, with the steep rise in price, the company also promises to offer a little bit more when it comes to their cars. The Polo will now get driver and front passenger side airbags as standard fitment. Also, the Polo Comfortline trim will get anti-lock brakes as standard too.

Announcing the price hike, Arvind Saxena, managing director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said, “We are proud to be leading the cause of driver safety, and we believe the introduction of airbags as standard fitment across all variants of the Polo is a major step forward in the context of safety.

Once again, this step underlines our commitment to producing better cars – and better-equipped cars – for the discerning Indian consumer. Input costs have steadily increased over the last few months, and exchange rate movements have not been favorable.

We have tried our best to absorb some of these, but in order to be able to continue to offer best-in-class quality and technology to our customers, we have now announced a 2.7 percent hike in our car prices.”

2013 Polo GT TDI

2013 Polo GT TDI

Ever since the launch of the top-end Polo GT, there were few people let down by that the fact that it was petrol powered. Thanks to the increasing price of petrol, it is now considered a luxury to fill a tank full of it. So, if you’d want to unleash the Polo GT over a long journey, half of the journey’s cost would go in fuel stops alone. So, for people who wanted a power-packed car that would go easy on their wallets, VW decided to announce the diesel powered Polo GT TDI, with sales beginning from September 2013.

There isn’t any difference when compared to the petrol powered twin. It has the same "GT" badge on the 2-bar chrome grille, body colored front and rear bumpers with parking sensors, and the 15-inch alloy rims to give it a sport stance.

The difference, however, lies under the hood. Volkswagen has planted the same 1.6-liter TDI diesel motor taken from the top end Vento TDI. It produces 105-horsepower with an healthy 250NM of torque. Sadly, the torque is transmitted via the same 5-speed manual from the standard Polo, rather the 7-Speed DSG from the Polo GT TSI. Nevertheless, manual transmissions are always engaging to drive, if you’re a true auto enthusiast.

The price for the Polo GT TDI stands at Rs 8.08 Lakh, which is a tad costlier than the petrol variant, making it the top-of-the-line Polo currently available.

Image and gallery posted is of the Polo GT TSI. It is exactly the same as the GT TDI, with the minor difference of it sporting a "TDI" badge at the rear

Ford Ecosport vs Volkswagen CrossPolo

Ford Ecosport vs Volkswagen CrossPolo

Today, we will be comparing two important cars that have made its Indian debut. The two competitors that in question are the Ford Ecosport, which was launched in the month of June this year, and the Volkswagen Cross Polo which is a stronger, tougher version of the Polo. Both the cars are based on the crossover concept and provides a little more punch than the usual hatches that are available in the market currently.

The Ford Ecosport created quite a buzz when it was first showcased at the 2012 Delhi Auto expo, and since then, it maintains that buzz. As far as the newly launched VW CrossPolo is concerned, there is nothing exciting in its exteriors. It looks like the Polo with extra protection.

The Ecosport has the added advantage of already being available in the market whereas the CrossPolo’s availability still remains in doubt. Nevertheless, the two do really have their own selling points that will set the users mind in a rumble, when asked to choose between both.

So is the Ecosport capable enough to face the newly launched Cross Polo? lets find out in details shall we.

2013 Volkswagen CrossPolo

2013 Volkswagen CrossPolo

Volkswagen is taking quite a risk here launching the CrossPolo for the Indian Market. We think so because a similar move was plotted by Skoda a couple of years ago when they launched the Fabia Scout in the market. But, because of its slump in sales, it was a dismal failure in the market. forcing Skoda to pull the plug of the promising crossover.

The Volkswagen CrossPolo isn’t something they’ve cooked up a couple months ago. The car is already available in some of the international markets for a long time, with sales in these markets being satisfactory. So VW decided to try whether the same formula would work in India too. To see whether Indians are looking for a beefed-up hatchback under the INR 10 Lakh category.

In order for the Germans to see the success in their new wannabe crossover, they will have to get three aspects right. Pricing, practicality and mileage. Have they?

rumors Volkswagen to Launch CrossPolo on August 21st

Volkswagen to Launch CrossPolo on August 21st

If we are to believe Autocar India, then we might see the Volkswagen CrossPolo break cover on the August 21st.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the CrossPolo, it is basically a Polo with the ability to tackle tough terrain, thanks to the increased ride height, skid plates, plastic side skirts and redesigned plastic rear and front bumper. With the anodized roof rails,it aims to be practical too.

The CrossPolo recently received approval from the ARAI, which means Volkswagen can finally launch the vehicle to the market without any hassle.

Rumor has it that the car will be launched in a single Highline variant with the 1.2-liter 3-cylinder producing the output.

Given the fact that Skoda employed a similar move (Remember the Fabia Scout, anyone?), it was a dismal failure with Skoda managing to sell very few units. So, it had to pulled out of the Indian market to prevent further losses. We hope that Volkswagen wouldn’t have to walk down the same road with the CrossPolo.

Prices are also in rumorland, though we expect the CrossPolo to cost somewhere around INR 7-8 Lakhs.

We’ll look out for this model and post a review once the vehicle becomes official.

Volkswagen WRC Polo. Important details

Volkswagen WRC Polo. Important details

Volkswagen had revealed the limited edition Polo R WRC earlier this year capable of reaching approximately 150kmph. The manufacturer now has hinted at a four-wheel drive Polo for the World Rally Championship (WRC) too. The Polo WRC car is manufactured byVolkswagen Motorsport and VW had plans of entering their car in the Rally d’Italia in Sardegna but they then scrapped their plans to continue on the development of their car.

Based on the Super 2000 regulations, the WRC Polo uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine unlike the normally aspirated 2-litre engine which comes on the other Super 2000 cars. Volkswagen though has definite plans to enter their car in the 2013 season in Rallye Monte Carlo and have signed Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala. This is the second time that VW would be entering the WRC and the manufacturer had earlier entered the championship with the Volkswagen Golf GTI between 1983 and 1988.

The WRC car uses the PQ25 platform which will also be used on the Audi A1 quattro and to help VW with the testing they had taken the services of two-time World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz who is also VW’s sporting advisor. Development work had taken place in Norway, Finland, Germany, Spain and Mexico.

The WRC car uses a blue and gray liver and at the front is a front spoiler with enlarged intakes while at the rear too is a spoiler and diffuser. Speaking on the VW plans on their WRC comeback their spokesman said, We’re still new and we have a lot to learn.’ ‘But next year (2013) we’re aiming for podiums, and then, in 2014, wins. With Sebastien [Ogier] and Jari-Matti Latvala, we feel we have the fastest driver lineup out there.’ Sponsorship VW in the WRC would be the energy drink giant Red Bull, which is no longer backing the reigning champion Citroen.

The VW Polo R (front wheel drive) however with the WRC acronym to it uses a 2-liter engine, 4 cylinder engine which produces 220PS and the engine is matched to it is a six-speed manual transmission. The Polo R car accelerates to 100kmph in 6.4seconds and the performance matches the Golf R. VW will build only 2500 units of this car

The star in our list of the 10 most fuel efficient diesel hatchbacks in India is the Fiat manufactured 1.3-litre multijet engine. Used by Tata, Maruti Suzuki, Chevrolet and of course Fiat, this engine is featured in 6 different cars. Ironically the Fiat Punto only features in our list in number 10. Maruti, Tata and Chevrolet engineers have all managed to get better figures than Fiat engineers which is an irony. Also is a surprise that unlike 5 Maruti Suzuki’s which made it to our list of petrol hatchbacks, only 2 were able to make it in this time around.

Topspeed's list of aspirational cars in India

Topspeed’s list of aspirational cars in India

Aspiration means different things to different people. Aspiration is relative like our idea of fun. What might be aspirational for someone might not be to another. The Tata Nano for example is an aspirational car for those who own a two wheeler. At Topspeed we like cars which make us want to drive. Cars which make us dream, cars which want us want to get behind the wheel and remind us why we became automobile enthusiasts in the first case. In our selection of cars we have consciously kept a 40lakhs cap and have tried to pick cars from different segments. Aspirational cars to us would be those which possess dynamic ability, a responsive and eager engine or like in the case of the Mahindra Thar and the Toyota Fortuner SUV’s, cars on which we could go from home to Timbuktu. The Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 are the cheapest cars that we have chosen and both these cars and could realistically be afforded by a salaried person while the Skoda Laura offers a involving package both dynamically and performance wise at an attractive price. The 6th car, the BMW 328i is an automotive gem and though beyond the reach of most, it makes us fall in love yet again with automobiles.

The Polo based SUV will be built on the MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) platform and will come with both front wheel drive and all-wheel drive (AWD) variants.

While for the European market there will be a more sophisticated and premium version of the mini SUV, there will be a more basic version for emerging markets like ours. Though the exact engine specs aren’t known yet, the mini SUV would get the option of a DSG gearbox.

VW is also working on developing a Up based entry-level SUV which is expected to be shown at the Sao Paulo Motor Show this year.

Volkswagen had also earlier announced at the Paris Motor Show the development of a SUV to rival the Skoda Yeti and the Nissan Juke which too would be launched in India. Closely related to the Audi Q2, this VW will be inspired from the Crosslane Coup. Confirming this to Autocar UK magazine was VW R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg. “We have to increase our SUV offerings,” he said. “It’s important we get in the A0 SUV segment, and we’re working on it.”

Though a final decision is still awaited, taking inspiration from the Renault owned Dacia brand, VW is also planning to launch a similar budget brand of their own. There has been no name which has been decided yet but this brand will be the 13th in the VW group and according to reports the prices for the new budget brand would start from as low as 2.5lakhs. These cars will be primarily aimed at the Indian and Chinese markets and apart from a hatch and sedan, a MPV is amongst the plan as well.

Volkswagen India is seriously planning to introduce a CNG variant in one of their cars. Volkswagen has been present in the Indian market for a few years now and their cars especially the Polo and the Vento have been fairly successful. One option the manufacturer is looking at is the introduction of CNG models. “We need to find answers as our sales are not up to industry benchmarks such as Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. We have to sit back and see how we are doing qualitative things like customer interaction and after-sales,” said Neeraj Garg, Director- Passenger cars,Volkswagen group. The Polo is VW’s most important car yet in India. What makes it work is the German engineering avaliable at an affordable price

The Volkswagen Polo is setting ablaze the racetracks at the Indian version of the Polo Cup. Young aspiring F1 drivers aim to win this coveted championship and then hope to race in Europe in the Volkswagen Scirosso cup. The German manufacturer has been aggressive and bold in India and wants to chart their own path rather than going with the flow. The VW Jetta, Passat and Toureg, all impressed us with their quality and engineering, with the Polo the manufacturer wants to be acknowledged by the enthusiast buyer as well. So far it’s worked well. VW India has rolled out its 100,000th car from its plant near Pune with the 100,000th car being rolled out within five months of the 50,000th car. The Polo is VW’s money spinning car and with prices starting from Rs4,61,251 to Rs6,44,475 for the petrol and Rs5,64,130 to Rs7,12,145 for the diesel variant ex-showroom New Delhi, we predict tough times for the Japanese manufacturers.
