the second generation Innova gets shaper exterior design and premium cabin
The Toyota Innova surely set a new standard in the MPV market of India, this vehicle also replaced the Toyota Qualis which itself was also a very successful product from the Japanese automaker and known for its capability of transporting large family from one place to another comfortably. The Toyota Innova replaced the Toyota Qualis and instantly became a hit and popular for its spacious and quality interior.
Things were going well for this people mover until recently the MPV market took a whole new turn after Maruti Suzuki entered the market with their new offering called Ertiga in 2012, while Honda later introduced the Mobilio. Although there are few other offerings from Chevrolet and Nissan but honestly they are not as popular compared to the above mentioned names. The best things about the new generation MUV’s are that they are the cheaper alternative to the ageing and comparatively expensive Innova which existed in the market for a long time.
Now that its backdated styling has taken its toll in its sales figures Toyota decided that this was the best time to introduce the next generation people mover to the scene.
The new generation Innova’s images and details surfaced online recently when Toyota unveiled the car in Indonesia and later launched it there. Now that almost all the information and details are available we have decided to give you the first impression of this people mover.
To begin with let us first inform you that the new generation Innova has been built on a completely new ladder frame platform which also supports the new generation Fortuner and Hilux Revo. As far its drivetrains are concerned the new Innova ditches its KD engines and has gone for downsized GD engines which are actually more powerful as well as fuel efficient at the same time.
At the recently concluded Auto Expo 2016, Toyota showcased the new Innova christened as Innova Crysta. The car looked identical to the one we have seen in the Indonesian website. The Crysta badging is probably an effort to give the new Innova a more distinguished identity. The new generation Innova looks sharp and upmarket, way more stylish than the previous model and it gets plenty of new updates as well
Update 08.08.2016:- Toyota introduced the Petrol variant of the Innova Crysta in India. The Innova Crysta petrol is available with three trims including the GX, VX and the top end Z trim. The top end Z trim is available only with automatic transmission.

The new Innova Crysta like we already mentioned looks sharper and edgier than before and if you ask me this people mover is also previewing Toyota’s new designs language which can also be seen in some of their recent products as well. Talk about swize and the new generation Inoova Crysta is wider as well as longer than its predecessor which in turn has created more room inside the cabin.
Towards the front the Innova gets wraparound headlamps which gets integrated projector and LED units . Apart from the new headlamp unit the front profile also gets massive grille with chrome laden slats. The long front hood also gets some edgy character lines as well.
The side profile however looks simple but the new ORVM’s gets integrated side indicators and the huge glass area towards the side profile helps even the third row passengers to get proper view of their surroundings. The highlight of the side profile however is the diagonally cut D pillars.
Walk towards the rear profile and you will greeted with the double layered completely new wrap around taillamps.The rear profile also gets an integrated rear spoiler as well which gives this massive vehicle some sporty appearance. There is even a shark fin antenna towards the rear roof area. Lastly the rear deep opening tailgate completes the overall look of the new Innova Crysta. The rear tailgate also gets the Smart Close back door system which automatically locks the door once it has been released.
Overall Toyota has gone for the grand tourer type styling on the new generation Innova and it definitely looks impressive and much more modern than its predecessor.
|Length||4, 735 m|
|Width||1, 830 mm|
|Height||1, 795 mm|
|Wheelbase||2, 750 mm|
The new generation Innova gets a completely revamped cabin. What attracted our attention even more is the fact that it also gets a Smart key with immbobilizer which is also actually available with many premium cars as well.
Step inside and the flowing dashboard design with silver and wood inserts looks quite driver eccentric and well equipped. The new steering wheel gets wrapped in leather (available with higher grades), the steering wheel also gets mounted audio controls as well. For the first time the Innova Crysta also gets new premium illumination LED ambient lighting system. You cannot miss the newly designed instrument cluster as well just behind the steering wheel which gets a 4.2 inch TFT Multi information display along with twin pods which gets 3D effects on them.
The highlight of the interior definitely has to be the new instrument panel design and modern looking 7.0 Inch touchsreen equipped infotainment system with air gesture control (this feature will most probably be available with the top end trim). The new combination meter design with white light background This completely new infotainment system also supports Bluetooth, aux and SD card. What else is also new is a new voice command system. As far as the seats are concerned the second row gets one touch tumble seats as well which also helps provide easier access to the third row passenger seats. Toyota has also equipped the Innova with an automatic climate control system and even rear AC vents.
The new generation Innova gets new diesel engines which will replace the existing KD family of engines which powers the current generation models.
The new Innova Crysta is launched in the market with two diesel engine options.The smaller 2.4 Litre unit is capable of producing about 150 Ps of peak power and 343 Nm of torque, this engine is paired to a five speed manual transmission. The other engine on offer is the bigger 2.8 Litre unit which produces about 174 Ps of peak power and 360 Nm of torque, this engine is paired to a new six speed Automatic transmission with sequential gearshifts. This engine actually also gets two different driving modes including economy and power modes.

Toyota Innova Crysta gets several safety features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, hill start assist control (HAC), rear parking sensors.
Prices for the new generation Innova Crysta starts at INR. 13.84 lakh for the base trim, while the top end trim is priced at INR. 20.78 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
The new Innova Crysta is available in following grades and is gets Garnet Red, White Pearl Crystal Shine, Avant-garde Bronze,along with Silver, Grey and Super White.
|Zx (7Seater)||AT / MT|
|Vx (7/8 Seater)||MT|
|Gx (7/8 Seater)||AT/MT|
|G (7/8 Seater)||MT|
The only competition that the Innova will face is definitely from the Renault Lodgy which was launched recently by the French Auto manufacturer. The lodgy has an impressive presence and it also considered as a comfortable people mover because of the amount of space that it promises to provide inside. The Lodgy is powered by the same 1.5 Litre DCi unit which is available in two states of tune and which also powers the Duster SUV.
The Innova Crysta definitely looks futuristic while the new platform has also helped it shed some amount of ts overall weight. The overhauled interior too looks premium and comes equipped with plenty of new features as well for the comfort of the passengers inside. Even the new drivetrain offered under the hood of this new vehicle is definitely more fuel efficient as well as powerful. The new MPV like we already mentioned above is league ahead of its predecessor and surely will be a worthy successor to the existing Innova which it will replace soon.
