Toyota Begins Testing the New Corolla Altis

Toyota Begins Testing the New Corolla Altis

After Toyota revealed their eleventh iteration of the world’s best selling car for the international market, it was deemed inevitable that the car would reach Indian shores. Question is, when?

Well, if we are to believe our sources, it looks like the 2014 Toyota Corolla Altis has arrived, albeit unofficially. The car has begun testing on Indian roads and we can confirm that the design of the car will be identical to the Euro-Spec model (depicted above). Compared to the U.S spec model, the car has a conservative styling with larger, 3-bar chrome grille and looks slightly more upmarket than the U.S version.

It’s all speculation under the hood, though we do have our bets on Toyota offering the same engine lineup that includes the 1.8-liter petrol and the 1.4-liter diesel motor with few improvements that’ll boost the efficiency and power. Toyota will ditch the hydraulic power steering in favor of an electric one that’ll improve efficiency by 3-5%. Power is transferred via the same seven-step CVT-based automatic gearbox with updated ratios for better fuel economy.

Expect this midsize Camry look-a-like to arrive in early 2014 with an estimated price tag of INR 16 Lakh, for the base model.

Toyota sales cross 200 million mark globally

Toyota sales cross 200 million mark globally

After 77 years since it began producing automobiles, Toyota sales have crossed the 200 million sales mark globally becoming the highest selling brand in the history of automobiles. The Toyota Corolla has been the bestselling car of Toyota which also happens to be the bestselling car in the world and has sold 40 million units. Not surprisingly one out of every five Toyotas ever sold has been the Corolla.

Toyota’s first ever vehicle, the Toyota G1 truck appeared in 1935, followed by its first car, the AA in 1936. Toyota grew out of the Toyoda Loom Works and "d" was replaced by a "t" because it was felt that it would be more auspicious in the Japanese language. Toyoda actually started as licensees of British loom manufacturers but the company then diversified to become the world’s most advanced automatic looms and put many of its British competitors out of business.

Speaking in the occasion Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda said, ’’I would like to thank Toyota customers around the world for helping us reach this important milestone.’’ ’’ I have the greatest respect, and would like to express my deepest gratitude, to all those involved in the development, assembly, and marketing of Toyota and Lexus products throughout the years. We are committed to building even better vehicles, in order to continue to offer the best possible products to consumers. This common goal is shared by our 300,000 employees across the globe.’’

Toyota has produced approximately 145.21 million vehicles in Japan and another 55.12 million units overseas. Its 50-millionth vehicle was produced in October 1985 but the next 50 million units were reached 11 years later in January 1997. Nine years later Toyota hit the 150 million mark and the final 50 million units were produced in about 6 and a half years.

Toyota entered the Indian market in 2000 with the Qualis which was sold sill 2005. The Qualis was then replaced by the Innova and amongst the other cars the Japanese manufacturers sells in India are theEtios, Etios Liva, Corolla Altis,Fortuner,Prius, Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado and the Camry.

2012 Toyota Corolla Altis Aero

2012 Toyota Corolla Altis Aero

Toyota came out with an anniversary variant of the Qualis a year or so before they pulled the plug off the utility vehicle. Dressed in all black, the anniversary of the Qualis stood out and it was kind of a way to celebrate the MPV which put Toyota firmly amongst the most sort after brand in India. The manufacturer now to mark the 10 years since the Corolla was introduced in India, has launched a limited edition Corolla Altis. The Toyota Corolla Altis Aero is based on the existing Euro IV J grade 1.8-litre petrol variant and is priced at Rs 11.47lakh, ex-showroom New Delhi. To begin with Toyota will only sell the Aero with a petrol engine and only 500 units of the variant will be sold till September 2012. If this model does receive a strong response then Toyota will consider introducing it with a diesel engine as well. The manufacturer is also hoping that initially by introducing the Altis Aero only with a petrol engine, there would be an increase in sales especially since customers in this segment have for obvious reason have preferred the frugal 1.4-litre diesel engine.
