India bound new Toyota Corolla made its global debut in Russia

Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan is the largest automaker of the world today, and behind its success there is a great contribution of a legendary sedan; Toyota Corolla. Introduced for the first time in 1966 the Toyota Corolla became the bestselling car of the world by 1974. It even surpassed the Volkswagen Beetle, which has been world’s first iconic model and also the longest serving model.

Toyota Corolla has gone through several updates and facelifts, and now the Japanese automaker has unveiled an all new facelifted version of the midsize sedan in Russia, which is expected to hit the Indian shores sometime in 2017. The midsize stylish looking upmarket sedan is quite popular in India as well, and the car sells in the country with the badge ‘Toyota Corolla Altis’. The new facelifted Toyota Corolla, as unveiled in Russia looks bolder and more stylish compare to the outgoing model. The updates have been incorporated at exterior and inside the cabin as well. Once launched in India, the car will directly compete with the Honda Civic, Chevrolet Cruze and Hyundai Elantra, and very interestingly, all these cars are about to hit the Indian market in recent future. On the design and styling front the 2017 Toyota Corolla sports more stylish and sharper appearance, which is reflected through the new design front grille, headlamp clusters, revamped front bumper and air intake. The very sharp and sleek headlamp clusters sport LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights. The front grille has been revamped, and the new facelifted model gets a sleek chrome bar running at the upper part of the grille, and meeting both the headlamp clusters. There is one more sleek chrome strip as well, which boasts the Toyota logo at the centre. Moving a bit lower, the front bumper looks aggressive and it sports wide air intake with horizontal slats and round shaped fog lamps sitting at both sides of the front fascia. At the side profile, the car gets flared wheel arches and bold alloy wheels, while the body looks plain. The side profile looks nicely sculpted with subtle character line, blackened glass area and nicely curved roofline. At the rear profile the new Toyota Corolla features new set of LED taillamps, a narrower chrome strip between the taillamps and muscular rear bumper. Dimensional changes have not been mentioned by the automaker although, but the new Corolla comes with an enhanced ground clearance at 150 mm compare to 135 mm in the previous edition.

Among its competitors the new Honda Civic looks most stylish and elegant with its sporty coupe like sculpted design, LED headlamps, boomerang shaped LED taillights. The Hyundai Elantra sits next with its executive sedan appearance featuring large hexagonal radiator grille, sharp headlamps with LED daytime running lights, vertically positioned LED fog lamps, sunroof, wide and sharp taillamps. The Chevrolet Cruze on the other hand looks very aggressive in its new avatar. The car dons a two part glossy black front grille, projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, delta shaped LED fog lamps, aggressive alloy wheels, lip spoiler.

INTERIOR

The interior of the facelifted 2017 Toyota Corolla has been updated as well, and the new cabin looks more upmarket with sporty and elegant styling. The multifunction steering wheel, instrument cluster and the centre console has been revised while the dashboard also comes with bit of revised touch and featuring round shaped HVAC vents at both sides. The instrument cluster now sports a 4.3 inch MID display at the centre flanked by dual round analog dials, while earlier the instrument cluster sported three round analog dials only. The multifunction steering wheel has been designed to make it more driver centric. Unlike the early model’s center console the new model sports an all touch appearance with minimized buttons and knobs, and the new center console with 7 inch full colour touchscreen looks more rectangular and boxy than the roundish console we used to see in the previous model. The dashboard gets a black sporty appearance. The upholstery and the seat materials used inside the cabin are more upmarket compare to the outgoing model. The car also boasts noise reduction in the cabin along with better ride quality and power assisted steering wheel.

Among the competitors the Chevrolet Cruze sports an unusual instrument cluster, multifunction steering wheel, a sleek centre console with 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by MyLink. The Hyundai Elantra and the Honda Civic both looks very upmarket and sporty at interior with black theme, multifunction steering wheels, dual analog dial and TFT display consisting instrument clusters, touchscreen infotainment system featuring centre console, front and rear armrests. So far, all these three car’s interiors have been designed and built to offer the occupants luxurious and comfortable experience.

DRIVETRAIN

The present generation Toyota Corolla Altis in India comes available in both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol engine is powered by a 1.8 litre engine while the diesel variant is powered by a 1.4 litre turbocharged unit. The 1.8 litre petrol engine is mated to a 7 speed CVT gearbox. The petrol engine generates 138 bhp of peak power and 173 Nm of peak torque with 16.07 kmpl of fuel economy, while the diesel engine produces 87 bhp of peak power and 205 Nm of peak torque with a fuel efficiency of 21.03 kmpl. Although Toyota has not revealed any detail about the powertrain of the upcoming facelifted Toyota Corolla, but expect the new sedan to come with updated engines which will deliver more power and fuel efficiency.

The new Chevrolet Cruze is powered by a 1.4 litre DOHC i-4 petrol engine in US, which is paired with a 6 speed manual or a 6 speed automatic gearbox as option. The turbocharged engine generates 153 hp of peak power and 240 Nm of peak torque. On the diesel front the car is likely to get a 1.6 litre fuel efficient unit instead of a larger 2.0 litre engine.

The new generation Hyundai Elantra is available in both petrol and diesel engine options and the petrol variant is powered by a 2.0 litre MPI Atkinson engine which churns out 147 hp of peak power and 179 Nm of peak torque. The diesel variant on the other hand is powered by a 1.4 litre Kappa turbocharged GDI engine which is capable to kick out 128 hp of peak power and 211 Nm of peak torque.

The tenth generation India bound Honda Civic will also come featuring multiple engine options. One is a 2.0 litre DOHC i-VTEC engine mated to a 6 speed CVT gearbox while the other one is a 1.5 litre DOHC inline 4 cylinder unit paired with a 6 speed CVT gearbox. These engines generate 158 hp and 174 hp of power outputs.

PRICE

The present India spec Toyota Corolla Altis is priced between INR. 13.79 lakh to INR. 18.67 lakh. Expect the upcoming 2017 facelifted Toyota Corolla to come bearing bit higher price tags.

Among its competitors, the new Hyundai Elantra is expected to come priced between INR. 15 lakh to INR. 20 lakh. The Honda Civic tenth generation model would mark the re-entry of the globally popular model in India, and it would get price tags ranging between INR. 13 lakh to INR. 20 lakh. Meanwhile the Chevrolet Cruze will also bear price tags between INR. 15 lakh to INR. 20 lakh. So far, the competition between these four cars on the pricing front is very close.
