Toyota has not yet launched the new generation Fortuner in India yet but there is a lot of hype surrounding this upcoming SUV in the Indian market. The Fortuner’s biggest rival Ford Endeavour was already launched in the Indian market and it is definitely getting lot of attention here. On the other hand in the recently concluded 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo, we were quite surprised when we found out that the new generation Fortuner was not even displayed at the show.

The new SUV has already been launched in some of the International markets including the markets of Thailand and Australia last year and recently Toyota even decided to introduced the sportier variant of the SUV as well, called the Fortuner TRD Sportivo. The Sportier variant is based on the new generation SUV and features some interesting cosmetic upgrades on its exterior and some sporty updates made to its interior. Under the hood the TRD Spotivo is powered by the same 2.8 LItre diesel engine which is paired to a 6 speed automatic transmission.

Toyota has already introduced a sportier TRD Sportivo variant of the Fortuner in India with their previous generation Fortuner which is already available in the Indian market. It was quite obvious that the Japanese auto maker will also introduce the sportier variant of the SUV even with their new generation offering as well. The new generation Fortuner TRD Sportivo which was introduced in the Malyasian market recently comes with a series of changes made both to its exterior as well interior as already mentioned above.


On its exterior the TRD Sportivo variant gets a smoked front grille with a newly designed front bumper, while towards the side profile it gets a Black uniquely designed 20 inch alloy wheels, the sportier variant also gets scuff plates with fluroscent TRD logo. Towards the rear the SUV gets stainless steel exhaust pipe as well, it also gets power back door with illuminated TRD logo. Apart from all that the rear profile also gets a newly designed rear bumper with chrome black trim. The other changes that you will notice on its exterior include a Black top sporty style roof and TRD Sportivo logo towards the rear boot door.


Inside the sportier variant there are some significant changes made as well, the SUV gets the seats wrapped in synthetic leather upholstery finished in Black and Red, it also gets special TRD Sportivo mats, besides these above mentioned changes the SUV also gets its instrument cluster meters marked with the TRD logo, while the sportier variant also gets a premium sound system as well. There is also a touchscreen infotainment system on offer too which gets Bluetooth connectivity feature along with rear view camera and navigation system integrated with it.


Under the hood this special sporty edition gets all its power from the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV diesel unit which is actually capable of producing about 177 Hp of peak power at 3400 rpm and 450 Nm of torque in between 1, 600-2400 rpm. This is actually the same drivetrain which powers the standard Fortuner. The other mechanical changes comes in the form of a revised suspension setup and bigger disc brakes for both its front and rear wheels.

We can expect the new generation Toyota Fortuner to arrive in the Indian markets sometimes next year and you can also expect the TRD Sportivo variant as well to hit the Indian shores few days after its launch.

The new generation Fortuner shares its underpinning with the new generation Hilux pick up truck and is powered by a 2.8 Litre four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine which replaced the existing 3.0 liter unit powering its predecessor. The engine produces about 174 Bhp of peak powr and is paired to a 6-speed manual and a new 6-speed automatic transmission.
