Tata Motors might not be the strongest player in the SUV segment of the Indian automobile market, but their Tata Safari is surely one of the strong players in the segment. Amidst the wait for the launch of Zica, Tata Motors has just launched Safari Storme Varicor 400, which is a more powerful variant available with the Tata Safari Storme VX top end trim. The 400 of the name indicates a more powerful torque amount which is 25% higher than the outgoing variants.
The new Tata Safari Storme Varicor 400 doesn’t boast any notable exterior or interior changes. The only major change come in form of the new powertrain. This car expected to give other SUVs like Mahindra XUV500 a tough competition with its powerful powertrain. Let’s take a look at the new SUV.

The exterior of the Tata Safari Storme Varicor 400 is almost same like the outgoing other variants. At the front profile the car gets a honeycomb grille, which is inspired by the international premium SUVs. The grille adorns the Tata badge at the centre, while the Storme lettering is visible on the chrome tip at the front of the bonnet. The projector headlamps and large front bumper delivers a bold and powerful aura. At the side profile the car gets new Varicor 400 badging. At the rear profile too, the only change is the Varicor 400 badging. Otherwise the car still sports the same basic design. Overall, the car looks heavy and muscular, as the Tata Safari always have been. The 200 mm ground clearance means, this car can perform tough jobs on rough terrains easily.
At the interior too, there is no major change visible. The multifunction 3 spoke steering wheel gets smart control buttons. The drive Integrated CONNECTNEXT infotainment system by Harman, equipped with 6 speakers surround system provides a better entertainment experience on the go. The infotainment system is also equipped with ultrasonic reverse parking sensors. The height adjustable driver’s seat aids in all round view. The cabin is designed to offer maximum space, with fine materials & well crafted upholstery. The dual air conditioning ensures all round cooling.
Safari Storme VX, which is the top end trim of the SUV is powered by an all new powerful 2.2 litre 16 valve DOHC turbocharged VTT Varicor 400 engine, which is mated with a 6 speed manual gearbox. The powertrain is capable to produce 156 PS peak power at 4000 rpm, while the peak torque amount stands at 400 Nm at 1750-2500 rpm. This means Varicor 400 variant is capable to produce nearly 25% more torque than the outbound variants. Power goes to all the 4 wheels via the Shift on the fly four wheel drive system. This car is also fitted with limited slip differential which helps the SUV deal with any road surface easily. The car is available with both 4x2 and 4x4 driving options. It can reach 0-100 kmph in 13 seconds, and the fuel economy stands at ARAI certified 13.9 kmpl.

Tata Motors has equipped the car to response swiftly during drives. The noise, vibration and harshness are also lower than before. The 5 link suspension with coil springs at the rear wheels, and double wishbone suspension at the front ensure a comfortable ride. While the new 260 mm diameter self adjusting clutch enables seamless gear shifting, therefore ensuring a smooth ride.
The Safari Storme’s rigid ladder frame chassis is constructed with advanced hydro formed members for high structural strength, adding robustness, enabling best load carrying capabilities, enhancing rigidity, while simultaneously reducing the weight for better fuel economy and speed. The crumple zones, side intrusion beams on all the four doors, dual SRS airbags and the collapsible steering column keeps the occupants safe from all sides during any mishap. The car is also equipped with inertia switch and an auto engine immobilizer. During an exigency, the inertia switch automatically cuts off the fuel supply to the engine and unlocks all the doors and also switches on the hazard warning lights, therefore warning other vehicles. The Safari Storme gets PES headlamps for better illumination and unwanted glare.
The new Tata Safari Storme VX SUV is available with both 4x2 and 4x4 drive options. The 4x2 variant is priced at INR. 1325530, while the 4X4 variant is priced at INR. 1459952 (ex-showroom New Delhi).
The muscular looking Mahindra XUV500 facelift comes powered by a 2.2 litre mHawk 140 diesel engine equipped with 5th Generation Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) and mated to a 6 speed synchromesh manual gearbox. It produces 142 PS peak power at 3750 rpm, while the torque amount is 330 Nm at 1600-2800 rpm.
The Tata Safari Varicor 400 is certainly the best looking and most powerful SUV from the Tata lineup. The highly competitive SUV segment of Indian automobile market is one most challenging sector where this car will have to fight with others.
