The Aria gets a rugged makeover. Can the Tata Hexa make a dent in competitors’ sales?

Tata Motors is currently on a spree to revise its entire portfolio, in order to stop the exponential decline in sales that the Indian automaker is currently experiencing. With the Tiago hatchback already accumulating huge praises from customers and critics, Tata has turned its attention to other upcoming products in its lineup. The Indian origin automaker has been making gradual improvement in their design language, and they are bringing bold and fresh products to the Indian market without hesitation. And the next big thing coming our way is a premium SUV Crossover, christened as the Tata Hexa. What do we know about this Tata crossover? Well, read-on to find out.

Earlier, when Tata Motors showcased the Tata Hexa concept at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, we all knew it would be a replacement of their Tata Aria MPV which didn’t do well in terms of sales in the Indian market. But, at the recently concluded 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo, Tata Motors showcased the production version of Tata Hexa, and it took everyone by surprise. The Hexa really impressed us. Rather than being a restyled Aria it came with an individual identity, which made it look a lot different to its stable siblings. The car looks like an MPV in terms of size, but it is actually a stylish and tough looking crossover equipped with the latest off-roading technologies.

The all new Tata Hexa looks sporty and muscular, yet stylish. Not only at the exterior, but the interior too get plenty of attractive features which are luxurious and provide a new-age character to this upcoming Tata Crossover.

Tata Hexa production ready model that was showcased at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo hugely resembles the concept which was showcased earlier in Geneva. The looks have been given a muscular appeal, but the butch appearance didn’t affect its stylish character that has been designed keeping in mind the tastes of urban customers.

The front profile of the Tata Hexa gets automatic projector headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, while the muscular looking front grille and trapezoidal shaped lower bumper adds a striking presence to the Hexa. Two air dams at both sides of the large front bumper makes the appearance beefy, while the fog lamps have been unusually shaped. The car gets a higher bonnet, which automatically enhances the bolder appearance of the Hexa. The hood sports a few crisp character lines running towards the nose, which manage to give the Hexa a bold and dynamic face.

Walk towards the side, and the Hexa’s inspiration from the Aria MPV becomes a lot more apparent. The entire silhouette of the Tata Hexa is nearly identical to that of its MPV twin. The ORVMs get LED side turning lamps, the wheel arches look big enough to give the car a bold look and are highlighted with a cladding. The 19 inch five twin-spoke alloy wheels ensure that the Tata Hexa does not get a bland angle to look at. The car gets a thick cladding at the bottom all around, while the greenhouse area comes with resemblances from the predecessor Tata Aria. It gets a chrome bar at the bottom of the greenhouse area, while the roofline gets roof rails on both sides.

The rear profile gets redesigned with horizontally stacked tail lamps, which actually look nice. The faux skid plates can be seen at the rear bottom with dual exhausts integrated to it. This makes the Hexa look like an SUV, while retaining the simplicity of its MPV sibling.

Tata Hexa promises a design language to the buyers which is world class and yet cost effective, no wonder it’s an Indian spec car from Tata. The interior provides safety, comfort and convenience to the occupants. At the front, the dashboard looks stylish, with a multifunction steering wheel with plenty of control buttons, and a dual pod driver information panel. The centre console might not be very upmarket, but you will surely become impressed with its stylish looks. It gets a Harman touchscreen infotainment panel along with several control buttons and knobs. The comfortable interior gets sporty captain seats, while ambient LED lighting further enhance the aura inside the cabin. The interior is quite spacious and comfortable. It also gets automatic climate control to deliver the occupants a more comfortable ride.

Tata Hexa is powered by a powerful 2.2 litre Varicor diesel engine which also delivers power to the latest Tata Safari Storme Varicor 400. This powertrain, mated to a 6 speed manual transmission, pumps out 154 bhp of peak power and 400 Nm peak torque. This engine also gets a 6 speed automatic transmission as well. The top end trim gets 4X4 driving option which is offered only with the manual transmission.

The other engine variant which is on offer is the 2.2 Litre VARICOR 320 which packs about 150 ps of peak power at 4000 rpm and 320 Nm of torque in between 1700-2700 rpm. The variant is exclusively available with the base XE trim. This engine is paired only to the 5 speed manual transmission which sends power to the front wheels.

The Tata Hexa gets plenty of safety features to begin with it gets 6 airbags, in total which includes duel front as well as side and curtain airbags. It further also gets Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Roll-over Mitigation, traction control system, Hill Hold Control (HHC), Hill Descent Control (HDC), ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Corner Stability Control etc.

Mahindra XUV500

The Mahindra XUV500 has received a mild facelift recently, which has further enhanced an already sweet package. As a result, when Tata Motors finally launches the Hexa concept in the market, it will have to face the XUV500 SUV which is powered by a 2.2 Litre M-Hawk engine which produces an impressive 140 hp of peak power and 330 Nm of torque.


Tata Hexa was one of the best products showcased by Tata Motors at the New Delhi Auto Expo 2016. The car comes with a sophisticated touch to keep things balanced. The 6 seater idea is a negative point though, Tata Motors has offered the new Crossover with both 6 seat as well as a 7 seven seating option.. Till now Tata Motors has offered 5 speed manual gearbox in their products, but this is the first time they will provide a 6 speed manual transmission. Apart from that, a six speed automatic gearbox and 4-wheel drive will make things even more interesting.
