A compact SUV from Tata Motors which opens new doors

Tata Motors is a household name which we are all familiar with not exactly for their passenger’s cars but for their array of commercial vehicles which ply on our Indian roads. However, the entire scenario changed since the year 2014 when our homegrown auto manufacturer decided to introduce their new generation lineup for the Indian market. In that particular year, Tata Motors also showcased a sub-4 meter SUV concept at the 2014 Auto Expo which looked futuristic and way ahead of its time. Later we came to know Tata Motors received a lot of enquiries about the particular concept car which encouraged them to give a green signal to the project.

Move ahead to the year 2016 Auto Expo where we saw an almost production ready Nexon concept which looked futuristic and promised to bring with it an array of new features to this segment. The SUV was spotted being tested a couple of times on the Indian road and other various conditions. We also got to see a glimpse of the production variant of the Nexon at the 2017 Geneva Motor show. Tata Motors has also confirmed that they will be launching the much awaited Nexon sub-4 meter SUV towards the month of September.

The sub-4 meter SUV is a direct rival to the popular Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Ford Ecosport. Initially, we thought that it would be launched only with a diesel engine under its hood, but now we have received the confirmation that Tata Nexon will be available with both diesel and petrol engines which also give it a slight edge over its rival the Vitara Brezza.

Tata Nexon definitely has the looks to catch everyone’s attention but does it have everything to tick all the boxes? Find it out here in our overview of this new sub-4 meter SUV from Tata Motors.

To begin with let us first inform you that the Nexon is based on the XO platform which is the same platform that also underpins almost all of their new generation compact cars including the Bolt, Zest and even the Tiago and Tigor.

Take a look at the production variant of the Nexon, and you will instantly mistake it with the concept car which was showcased almost three years back at the 2014 Auto Expo with some practical additions. This compact SUV stands apart from the crowd because of certain factors which include its modern looking face, a sloping roofline like silhouette, big extended X like design towards the rear which has been finished in Ivory white ceramic type element that we can also find towards the side profile and also under the front fog lamps. The big 16-inch chunky alloy wheels, high ground clearance of 200 mm, projector headlamps and LED taillamps are some other highlights which make the SUV looks quite modern and well equipped and practical at the same time.

The premium looking front grille has been finished in Piano black and has the Tata logo at the centre while a chrome slat sits on the base of the grille and extends all the way towards the side headlamps edges (Tata Motors calls it a humanity line). The Nexon also gets LED DRL’s positioned below the projector headlamps units. Towards the lower front face, the round fog lamps placed slightly higher to perhaps highlighting the high ground clearance.

Towards the side profile is where you will witness all the crease lines and bulges. The muscular wheel arches and the big 16 inch wheels along with black plastic claddings further add to its muscular stance. Just below the window line is where you will also find the Ivory white strip which you will also notice towards the front and rear profile of the SUV. One of the other highlights of the side profile of the SUV is its coupe like sloping roofline which is further accentuated by the Contrasting roof colour.

Towards the rear profile the Nexon gets an X shaped element which is positioned just below the rear windscreen. The floating roof spoiler towards the rear also features a LED stop lamps.

Just like on the outside one will also find lots of new elements inside the cabin as well which includes a new fixed touchscreen infotainment system on top of the dashboard. This system looks quite similar to the ones you will find in some other high-end cars like Audi and Mercedes. The dash, on the other hand, has been finished in dual tone colours which add a luxurious feeling inside the cabin. There are plenty of storage spaces inside the cabin as well. There is plenty of room inside the cabin and can easily seat five occupants inside. However, we do feel that the sloping roofline might interfere in the headroom space of the taller rear occupants. The Nexon borrows the steering wheel and few bits from the Bolt and Zest hatchback.

Now if we talk about equipment list then I must inform you that Tata Motors has added plenty of them inside. You do get a new first in class multi-drive modes which are operated by a round dial positioned just behind the gear lever. Tata Motors has also provided sliding tambour door mechanism in between the driver and passenger seat for easy storage which is actually quite useful because it prevents lot stuff to fall out of place especially when you hit a pothole. The 6.5 inch HD display unit is compatible with Android Auto as well as Apple Play(to be offered soon). The Nexon even gets an advanced Harman infotainment system enabled with a drive mode based HMI theme. The eight speaker audio system promises to bring harmonic richness in the car audio system. Lastly, the rear seats too look quite comfortable, and the passengers seating at the rear also gets a rear AC blower as well. The boot at the back is also quite spacious and bigger than that of its rival. If you want to know about numbers, then the Nexon offers an impressive 350 Litres space at the rear.

Coming to the drivetrains, the Nexon will be available with both diesel and petrol engines dismissing the rumour of offering only a diesel variant during the time of its launch.

The petrol variant gets the 1.2 Litre, three cylinder engine which is the same unit which also powers the Tiago and Tigor. But, the engine has been worked upon to make it more responsive and also to churn out slightly more power. The turbocharged unit is capable of churning out a healthy power and torque figures of 110hp and 170Nm respectively. The diesel variant, on the other hand, gets the new 1.5-litre four cylinder direct injection turbo unit which is capable of producing about 110 Ps of peak power and 260 Nm of torque. Both the engines paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox which is also new for this segment. However, there are rumours that Tata Motors might also introduce an AMT transmission as well soon.

For the first time, Tata Motors is also offering three different drive modes as well for both petrol and diesel variants. The three different drive modes on offer are Eco, City and Sport. While the City moe allows the owner to zip through City traffic, the Eco mode calms things down and focuses on returning impressive overall fuel efficiency. For those who want a spirited driving experience can always opt for the Sport mode.

The Vitara Brezza was recently launched to compete in the compact SUV segment. And being a perfect combination of macho looks, a practical cabin, fuel efficient potent engines, and Maruti’s unmatched customer satisfaction levels, the Vitara Brezza has immediately been deemed a massive success. The automaker has already claimed to have received more than 30,000 bookings for the Brezza, within just two weeks of its launch. Powered by a 1.3-litre diesel engine that exhales 90 PS of power, the Brezza will be Nexon’s biggest competitor in the segment.

Ford EcoSport

The Ford EcoSport was once the king of the compact SUV segment, but the Brezza has now overtaken its American rival. To tackle this immense competition from Maruti, Ford dropped its prices by around 1 lacs. The automaker has also launched the updated EcoSport in the Indian market recently and although it has not received any significant changes, the few cosmetic and feature updates do make it a worthy competitor in the compact SUV segment. The Ecosport now gets signature light guide as well as daytime running lamps. It still gets three engine options for Indian market which includes the 1.5 Litre petrol, the 1.0 Litre Ecoboost engine and the one and only 1.5 Litre diesel variant. The 1.5 Litre TDCi diesel engine has received a power boost.
