2014 Skoda Rapid Ultima
With the rise of the middle class, one market that has benefited and expanded is the mid-size sedan segment. Volkswagen is treading on a two pronged strategy consisting of two similar products under different brand names. The Vento and Rapid are built under one parent company and while the VW Vento is one of the popular cars in the segment, the Skoda Rapid too has garnered appreciation from the buyers.
The Czech brand has launched a special edition of the Rapid called the Rapid Ultima almost mirroring Volkswagen’s move to offer extra standard kit on the Vento. Thus, the Skoda Rapid Ultima gets additional features including a navigation system, additional safety airbags, projector headlamps, leather interior, parking sensors, among others.
The engines powering the car remain the same. The 1.6-liter MPI petrol with 105 PS and a 1.6-liter TDI CR producing 105 PS and is good for 250 Nm of peak torque. The model is offered with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed Tiptronic. Special ’Ultima’ branding differentiates it from the standard Skoda Rapid models.

The Volkswagen Vento is the sister car of the Rapid which is based on the same platform as the Czech car. It also shares its underpinnings along with the engines. Which mean, the Vento gets the same 1.6-liter petrol engine with 105 PS of peak power and 153 Nm of torque. As with the Skoda Rapid, the Vento too gets a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 1.6-liter diesel generates 105 PS and 250 Nm of torque.
The new Honda City is currently the market leader in terms of sales numbers. For the last couple of months Honda has been able to maintain a descent lead over its arch rival Hyundai Verna. The new City is powered by a 1.5-liter i-VTEC petrol engine with 119 PS and 145 Nm. A new 1.5-liter i-DTEC diesel engine has been added to the range which is capable of 100 PS and 200 Nm. The all-new Honda City offers a more premium interior, build and ride quality than the Vento and Rapid.
The Skoda Rapid in Ultima Edition guise offers loads of new features than before. Leaving the aesthetic details aside, customers do benefit from the additional safety airbag, projector headlights, satellite navigation system and Bluetooth. In a way, Skoda has tried to get rid of their accessories stock pile before the end of fiscal year which is a common practice. Moreover, the overshadowed Skoda Rapid will remain the underdog.
