2014 Skoda Rapid Spaceback
At the Frankfurt Motor Show 2013, Skoda showcased two new vehicles – the facelifted Yeti and the Rapid Spaceback, which is a new hatch based on the Skoda Rapid sedan. The Czech brand has announced its plans to launch at least eight new or facelifted models by the end of 2013, which sounds quite ambitious. But, after witnessing Skoda launch their new Octavia, facelifted Yeti and now a estate, it seems they are quite serious about their target.
The Skoda Rapid Spaceback is a compact small car meant for small urban families and the youth. With this, the company makes an entry to the A-segment market. They will also be offering various options for customization to attract more of the young and dynamic motor enthusiasts looking for personalization.
Presently, the company is busy with their program of launching this new hatchback in UK, without hinting on any plans of launching it in India. But, since it is a well known fact that India has a very attractive as well as competitive compact car market, Skoda wouldn’t want to waste the opportunity. They must find something to fill the hole left by the Skoda Fabia.

Before we start describing about the looks of Skoda’s new hatchback, please keep in mind that the Rapid Spaceback is built on the European Rapid, which is totally different from the Indian Rapid sedan. As you may notice the styling has been kept chic and dynamic. The company says that the focus of this hatch is on three points mainly – space, practicality and functionality and so do not expect the presence of any high end technologies or any unique driving features in it.
The Spaceback follows the new design philosophy that is seen across Skoda’s brand new range of vehicles. You can notice elements from the 2013 Skoda Octavia making its way here. The Spaceback looks very attractive much like its sedan twin, the Rapid, with the sleek xenon headlamps and the daytime running LED strip running across. On both the edges of the front fender, a pair of fog lamps find their place, which are incorporated with the ‘corner function’ that not only serve as classic fog lamps but also illuminates the part of road where the driver want to turn, helping identify hard-to-see obstacles. The front radiator grille looks classy with the chrome finish and is a fixed part, that is, it does not rise with the hood of the car.
The sides of the car has been kept neat and simple with the body colored door handles and dynamic lines that highlight the strength of the car. At the rear, what visually will attract you is the unique ‘C’ shaped tail lamp. The best thing about this hatch is that it has a huge panoramic glass roof and a extended rear window, which looks very cool and new. The hatch has been incorporated with alloy wheels that can be chosen from four design types as well as sizes between 15”, 16” and 17”. One may choose the Skoda Rapid Spaceback from the following color palette:
- * Corrida Red
- * Black Magic Pearl Effect
- * Moon White
- * Cappuccino Beige Metallic
- * Rio Red Metallic
- * Brilliant Silver Metallic
- * Race Blue
- * Candy White
- * Sprint Yellow
- * Metal Grey Metallic
- * Denim Blue Metallic
- * Rallaye Green
- * Pacific Blue
Skoda claims its new hatchback is quite spacious (the reason behind its name ‘Spaceback’). But, is it really so? Firstly, since the Spaceback is total transition from a sedan to a hatchback, Skoda had to deliberately drop the boot space from 500liters to 415liters. Thanks to all the glass around, the cabin however is airy when compared to the Hyundai i30, one of its competitor-to-be. Skoda has maintained a dual color scheme in the hatch. The two seats at the front comes in two color options, on the other hand, the rear seats are crafted to provide comfort for three passengers. The front seats of the car has been provided with ‘storage pockets’ which can be used to store items like diaries, maps etc. The dashboard of the car also comes with a dual color treatment but, the upper part will get the piano black color as standard so that the reflections from the glass could be absorbed. The color of the lower part can be chosen from black, grey and beige shades depending on the trim. The new generation 3-spoke leather steering wheel of the hatch is multi-functional with radio and phone controls. The hint of chrome makes it more attractive. The instrument console of the hatch is simple and contains all the important meters required for the driver, including music player and air conditioning. Without any overdo, the interior of the compact car is much spacious unlike its sedan sibling.
Some additional features offered by Skoda Rapid Spaceback are:
- * Climatronic climate control.
- * Gear change recommendation.
- * Hill Hold Control.
- * Acoustic rear parking sensors.
Under the hood, the Skoda Rapid Spaceback houses the modern turbocharged engines with direct fuel injection – gasoline TSI and diesel TDI units – that can achieve low fuel consumption and emission while keeping a good punch. One may choose the petrol engine from four different options and the diesel engine from two options. The 1.2-litre TSI petrol with 103bhp is known to be refined and well suited on highways. On the other hand, the 1.6-litre TDI diesel is available in 88bhp and 103bhp variant. All the engines will come mated to a manual gearbox.
Ride and Safety Features
The Spaceback is expected to deliver a comfortable ride. The set up of the car is based on a monocoque chassis. Skoda has ditched the hydraulic system in favour of an electric power steering. They have also provided its hatch with an array of safety features like six airbags , two at the front and the rest of them have been placed at the sides, ABS, anti-slip regulation for the tyres, a vest holder under the driver’s seat, Electronic Differential Lock – EDL and Electronic Stability Control – ESC, and Mechanical Brake Assist (MBA) and Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA).
So far, the details on the Skoda Rapid Spaceback sound very promising and seem like a value for money car, but we’ll be waiting to watch this hatch perform in the real world. The car no doubt is a practical one with all the features put together, but if Skoda ever plans on launching it in India, expect reduction in many features to sell it at a reasonable price here.

ŠKODA AUTO launched its first entry to the strong segment of compact family hatchbacks. On the VW Group Night, held at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main, a new and youthful ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback compact family car was unveiled. The new model will start entering European markets in October 2013. For Czech automaker, this means further expanding the model range and continuing the largest model offensive in the history of the brand.
„ŠKODA AUTO is keeping the pace. The new Rapid Spaceback is a milestone in the history of our brand - it’s the first hatchback to open our door into the strongest market segment in Europe,” says ŠKODA AUTO CEO Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. „Our youthful new model brings many new features to this segment and adds typical ŠKODA qualities to the hatchback body style, all wrapped up in fresh and dynamic design.”
The Rapid Spaceback fills in the gap between the Fabia and Octavia in the ŠKODA model range. With its fresh and dynamic style, it aims especially at young customers and families. It will get the attention with its clear, strong design language: it differs from competing models both visually and functionally. Its offer of space sets new standards for the compact family hatchback market segment. In addition to this, it comes with many practical “Simply Clever” features. ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback comes to European markets with four petrol and two diesel engines. Power outputs range from 55 kW to 90 kW.
ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback is the latest new car launched during the largest model offensive in the history of the brand. In the year 2013 alone, eight new or revised ŠKODA models will be launched, and Czech automaker still enters new market segments. Latest aditions to the model range were Citigo and Rapid models, offering whole new options for new customers. Within the “ŠKODA 2018 Growth Strategy,” the brand is aiming to increase its annual sales to at least 1.5 million cars.
