Volkswagen might sell some of its major brands, in an attempt to cover the costs of the dieselgate scandal. In last few months the German auto giant has been going through tough times. Due to the dieselgate scandal they have faced huge amount of government penalties as well as private lawsuits in several countries. The company is also facing huge amount of logistic cost for recall programs worldwide alongside the burden of fixing multimillion affected cars worldwide. For all this, they have taken an enormous amount of loan from 13 financial institutions across Europe, which amounts around INR. 1.4 lakh crore. To secure the huge amount of loan Volkswagen has a chance to sell their major assets and divest brands like Bentley, Lamborghini, Ducati, as the company is finding no other sources of repayments.
Dieselgate scan first came into light in US. It was found that, the German group equipped their 1.2 litre, 1.5 litre, 1.6 litre, and 2.0 litre EA 189 diesel engines with a defeat device to cheat the emission tests. After the scandal came into light in US, several countries started probing the Volkswagen cars, and VW cars found with the cheating device globally, which resulted outcry against the German brand. Not only that, the sales figures for the German brand dropped drastically. In India too Volkswagen has initiated the largest recall of the country which includes more than 323700 cars. The affected cars in India include cars from Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi, notably the latter two brands come as the subsidiary of Volkswagen Group.
Reports are there that Volkswagen’s popular hatchback Polo will adorn some additional features to become more attractive, and it will be available in Indian market soon. The additional features will come in the form of cosmetic changes only, no drivetrain modification or change.
The new features available in the upcoming car will be electrically foldable ORVMs, cooled glove box, cruise control etc. We got these same features in the Vento facelift sedan, launched early this year. While the upcoming new variant of Polo will sport these additional features, the engine and transmission remains the same.
Volkswagen Polo comes in two petrol powered variants, while there are two diesel variants too. In the petrol segment there is a 1.2 liter 3 cylinder unit, matched with 5 speed manual transmission, which produces 74 bhp power and 110 Nm torque, while there is a 1.2 liter 4 cylinder unit too, matched with 7 speed DSG automatic gearbox, churning out 103 bhp power and 175 Nm torque. On the other hand there are two 1.5 liter 4 cylinder diesel engines, matched with 5 speed manual gear box with different tuning, one producing 89 bhp power and 230 Nm torque, while the other unit delivers 103 bhp power and 250 Nm torque.
With some additional features, new Polo will come with a higher price tag, Trendline and Comfortline trims are set for a price hike of INR. 5000, while the Highline trim price will go up to INR. 15000. This updated version of Polo is scheduled for launch later this month.
Tata Motors has incurred insurmountable loses when it comes to the Tata Nano project. The project which began with the installation of a new assembly line at Sanand, Gujarat, still remains under-utilized. Now, due to lackluster demand for the Tata Nano, the company has even shelved plans of a diesel model that was to be launched later this year.
Tata Motors now plans to utilize the remaining capacity of the Sanand plant for a budget hatchback. According to Cartoq, the upcoming hatchback will replace the Indica eV2 and is code-named- Kite. This new model would also spawn a compact sedan based on the same platform.
This means, the eV2 replacement and the subsequent compact sedan could be the new entry-level model offered by Tata. Similarly, the Bolt hatchback and Zest compact sedan could be priced on the higher side. Tata could also be looking at an AMT equipped Kite for the future.
At present, the Indica eV2 and Indigo eCS is being offered with 1.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine with 70 PS of peak power and 140 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission.
Honda is all set to launch a new Brio-based MPV in the Indian market. The Mobilio MPV which is already on sale in a few South-East Asian markets has been put into production here in India as well. The company has commenced the trial production of the Mobilio at its Greater Noida plan. The Brio-based Mobilio MPV is expected to be launched in the next two months, according to reports.
The Honda Mobilio follows the same Man-maximum-Machine-minimum philosophy of the Brio. That is Honda-speak for enhanced interior space in a compact package. The cabin will feature seats that can be configured in various ways in order to make good use of the space. The dashboard and instruments would be lifted directly from the Brio with few minor changes.
The Mobilio will also use the same engines as the Brio and its other derivative- the Amaze compact sedan. The 1.5-liter petrol and 1.5-liter i-DTEC diesel will spearhead its offensive against the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the likes. A 5-speed manual transmission will be standard on the Mobilio, while an automatic version might not be on the horizon any time soon.
Volkswagen is currently shifting all its operations from the old platforms to the new MQB architecture. The new framework is more cost effective, lightweight and rigid. This would allow future Volkswagen cars to be more competitive and hence the shift.
That said, VW’s India operations still rely of the PQ25 platform which underpins the Vento and Polo. Similarly, the VW Taigun uses the same base; hence this became the obvious choice to fill in the compact SUV segment. However, the VW Group is steadily phasing out the old platform across all of its manufacturing plants. Based on the new MQB architecture is one other compact SUV concept. The T-Roc may be too outlandish for a production car, but since it is based on MQB, it could well be the compact SUV to rival the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster.
The T-Roc concept is a two-door SUV which is production guise and would definitely grow another pair of doors. Also, the removable top would be ditched for a fixed roof. Underneath the concept is a 2.0-liter TDI with 182 PS and all-wheel drive. This powertrain would be switched with a transverse front-wheel drive setup to bring down the costs to suit the market.
Ford Motor Co will soon announce the replacement of current Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally with Chief Operating Officer Mark Fields.
Mulally, currently 68-years old have been working to revive the fortunes of Ford since he took charge way back in 2006. He will step down before the end of this year. Fields, currently 53 became the COO in December 2012 and has been named to replace Mulally.
Ford spokeswomen Susan Krusel said that Ford takes the succession very seriously and they do have plans in place but for competitive reason, Ford would not like to discuss them.
Mulally has been looking for his life after the Ford tenure. He was in a close race to take the top job at Microsoft, which eventually went to Satya Nadella. Before that, in 2012, he was in discussion to take up a major role in Obama administration but eventually committed two more years to Ford. Reports say the Fields will take on a much stronger company than Mulally did back in 2006.
The highly profitable North American operations are derived by top-seller F-150 large pickup truck. Ford has also seen a growth in share in Chinese market and has seen biggest recovery in European market. Since Mulally took office as CEO, Ford’s stock price also has increased almost by double.
Fields will have to execute all the plans after taking over as CEO whereas Mulally face the challenge of transformation from day one in office. Ford has plans to launch as many as 23 new vehicles globally this year, which is a record number for the company; the new vehicles also include their best-selling F-150.
Fields has been working on to improve the quality of Ford vehicles since last one year, and this will be a major test for him.
Rumors always does spice up things and the recent intriguing news of Mercedes Benz taking hold over the Aston Martin have paved way too many speculations. Presently, Mercedes owns a 5% stake hold of Aston Martin, a venture into which the German luxury carmaker entered last year. This step by both the companies resulted into the installation of the AMG engine in the Vantage model of Aston Martin.
When the chairman of the Daimler group, Dr. Dieter Zetsche was asked about this matter, he neither did completely disagree nor did he agree on the matter completely. Rather he diplomatically answered that Aston Martin is a fantastic brand, and they are willing to support its further development. He also added by saying that Aston had offered the CEO’s job to three individuals and had been rebuffed by two but now had a third in prospect.
Earlier, Aston Martin was owned by Ford, but was sold later but still somehow retained the grille. With the ever growing competition in the international auto-market, it has been really a tough job for Aston to cope up without a stronger backing. But Aston Martin yet has been successful in maintaining its esteem.
Though it is not new surprise to all of us that a German auto-major bought a British car company, and now with all the rumors circling around, it seems that we will be able to witness a grand alliance between the two prestigious auto-companies in the near future.
News from BMW. CAR Magazine has dug up some interesting information about the next generation BMW 5-Series. Dubbed the G30 by insiders, the new BMW 5-Series will use some unconventional engines and will also spawn a new M5 super saloon. If recent reports are true, then the next M5 could be powered by a 600 horsepower engine and still be "planet-friendly".
The new 5-Series will spawn a wide array of body styles including a long-wheel base limousine, a Gran Tursismo version and a touring/estate model. Yes, the GT will be back and lets hope this time the designers get it right. Apart from the aesthetic upgrade, the new 5’er will be lighter than before and of course more efficient.
BMW will also offer all-wheel drive versions of the 5-Series apart from the standard rear-wheel drive setup. The xDrive models are more popular with the average buyer of the 5-Series Touring.
Big news or shall we say unconfirmed report about the next generation M5 is that, the car will use aluminium and carbon fiber to cut weight and will be powered by a 600 horsepower engine. A self-driving mode will also make its debut on the new 5-Series. So if you don’t fancy driving your BMW, which is rare if you own one, it would drive itself, apparently.

A lot of speculation has been floating across the web regarding a new compact SUV from Hyundai which will, reportedly make its debut in 2015. The new SUV from Hyundai will rival SUVs like the Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster and the like.
Recently, more information surfaced regarding about the plans that Hyundai has for the SUV. From the information, it can be well understood that the upcoming SUV will be based on a platform, code-named GC, that is tailor-made for developing markets like ours. Also for the first time, this new SUV shall be christened with an Indian name. Hyundai with its new compact SUV is expected to sell around 11,000 units a month which is quite a huge expectation, given the fact that Ford is expecting to sell only 4,400 units of the Ecosport, every month.
Talking about the interior, the baby Hyundai SUV will come with 5-seater configuration, with a 7-seater option still in the cards (which is quite stuffy for a compact SUV). On the styling front, Hyundai is keen to give it a simple look rather than going crazy with their Fluidic design language. It is expected to be powered by the Verna’s 1.6-litre VGT diesel engine. To keep the costs down, the company may develop a new 1.5-litre diesel engine that helps the car to avoid the Rs 15,000 tax which is applicable on engines larger than 1.5-liters.
It is yet to be seen whether Hyundai’s new SUV can break the standard of compact SUVs in the market which is already set by the segment leader Ford Ecosport. But it’s good to know that Hyundai is not betting on its sedan and hatchbacks alone to help them snatch the number one spot
If we are to believe Autocar India, then we might see the Volkswagen CrossPolo break cover on the August 21st.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the CrossPolo, it is basically a Polo with the ability to tackle tough terrain, thanks to the increased ride height, skid plates, plastic side skirts and redesigned plastic rear and front bumper. With the anodized roof rails,it aims to be practical too.
The CrossPolo recently received approval from the ARAI, which means Volkswagen can finally launch the vehicle to the market without any hassle.
Rumor has it that the car will be launched in a single Highline variant with the 1.2-liter 3-cylinder producing the output.
Given the fact that Skoda employed a similar move (Remember the Fabia Scout, anyone?), it was a dismal failure with Skoda managing to sell very few units. So, it had to pulled out of the Indian market to prevent further losses. We hope that Volkswagen wouldn’t have to walk down the same road with the CrossPolo.
Prices are also in rumorland, though we expect the CrossPolo to cost somewhere around INR 7-8 Lakhs.
We’ll look out for this model and post a review once the vehicle becomes official.
If rumours and reports are to be believed, Mahindra and Mahindra is in line to acquire British sportscar manufacturer Aston Martin from its current Kuwait based owner Investment Dar Co. The Kuwaiti company owns a 64 percent stake inAston Martin and is planning to sell its $800million stake in the company. Aston Martin was bought over from Ford by Investment Dar Co in 2007 but no conformation has come yet from Aston Martin itself.
The Kuwaiti company is under dept and that’s the reason it is planning to sell its stake in Aston. For Aston itself the sale to Mahindra isn’t a bad idea either since it needs the financial backing of a big manufacturer to develop future cars. Toyota too it is rumoured is interested in buying Aston and has already done a study to see if buying the stake is feasible. Aston sold about 4,200 vehicles last year.
Both Mahindra and the Kuwati company have refused to comment to the sale of Aston. Mahindra last year had purchased Korean manufacturer SssangYong and last month launched the Rexton SUV in India.
Aston Martin entered India last year and Performance Cars which is a division of Infinity Cars has been appointed as the official importer and distributor for Aston Martin.
Rumors in the automobile industry suggest that Indian company Mahindra & Mahindra is interested in buying the bankrupt Swedish automobile manufacturer Saab. Mahindra however is declining to comment on the speculation that it may be the third party interested in purchasing Saab.
