Renault KWID 1.0 Litre

The same KWID hatchback with a more powerful 1.0 Litre heart

There were rumours that Renault is all set to add another new variant to their popular entry level hatchback KWID. Now this has been done to get a fair share of this popular entry level hatchback segment which does not have a lot of competition. Renault launched the KWID recently and it quickly became popular in this segment because of its one of a kind features and offcourse out of the box Crossover type styling never seen before in a hatchback. The KWID competes directly with the Alto800, Hyundai Eon and the recently launched Datsun RediGo and we have to agree that it is actually giving some tough time to its rivals.

Now all the above mentioned cars uses a 800 cc displacement motors including the KWID but in order to get the attention of other auto makers Renault needed a bigger engines and that is why they have decided to introduce one more powerful variant to their existing KWID hatchback. Maruti who has completely changed the game with their product Alto has a 1.0 Litre engine placed under the hood of the K10, while the Korean auto maker Hyundai too has a powerful 1.0 Litre variant of the Eon as well.

So in order to cope with its competition Renault decided to introduce a new variants of the KWID at the 2016 Auto show powered by a completely new 1.0 Litre engine. The best thing about the new engine is that it not only gets a manual transmission but an optional AMT transmission as well with the 1.0 Litre variant. We successfully managed to click some images of the car from the Auto show floor and also were able to collect some new information as well which we updated in this article.

Brazil Spec Renault KWID VS Indian Spec Renault KWID

Brazil Spec Renault KWID VS Indian Spec Renault KWID

well the Brazilian spec KWID definitely looks well equipped find out what is different

Renault launched the KWID back in 2015, and this was their first attempt to make their mark in the entry level car segment of India. After the KWID’s launch, its aggressive pricing and the features that it offered in an entry-level hatchback made the car an instant hit. The KWID even bite into the sales shares of some other entry level products from renowned manufacturers like Maruti and Hyundai. The Indian customers appreciated everything about the car till Global NCAP crash tested the compact entry-level hatchbacks to measure the safety standards that they offered to the occupants inside. To our surprise and shock, the KWID failed the safety standard test horribly. The fate of the KWID at the crash test was similar to some other entry level cars like the Maruti Alto800 and Hyundai Eon.

Renault then assured the Indian buyers that they have reworked on the structure of the hatchback and launched the updated car. Later when the KWID has tested again, it managed to score 1-star safety rating. The reports stated that Renault although took steps in reinforcing the structure but they have made changes only to the driver side where as the passenger side structure was left untouched.

Now Renault has recently launched the KWID hatchback in the markets of Brazil, and it comes with plenty of upgraded equipment as well as cosmetic updates as well. Below we have provided all the difference between the Indian spec KWID and the Brazilian-spec KWID find out which one offers better equipment and safety features at the price point.

Renault KWID has been an instant hit after its launch in the Indian market and there is no doubt in the fact that after the Duster, the KWID is definitely their most successful product which has helped them to plant a firmer foot in the Indian automotive market.

Renault To Launch KWID Climber On 9th March

Renault To Launch KWID Climber On 9th March

This will be the flagship offering from the KWID brand and will get all the goodies

According to the ET Auto, Renault is all set to introduce another new variant of the KWID tomorrow. This is the much awaited KWID Climber variant which was showcased first at the 2016 Auto Expo.

The reports also state that this is the French Automakers strategy of introducing entirely new KWID variants every six months. Until now they already have launched three variants of their entry level offering including the 800 cc variant while later after almost a year they introduced the 1.0 Litre followed by the AMT (Easy-R) option later.

The Renault KWID Climber is powered by the more powerful 1.0 Litre, three-cylinder unit which might also feature the AMT gearbox as an option. The KWID Climber is the same KWID hatchback with few cosmetic updates made to its exterior as well as interior so also expect it to be priced reasonable as well.

As far as the cosmetic changes are concerned to assume the KWID Climber to get a redesigned front grille and bumper while you can also expect the front nose to adorn faux skid plates as well to make the front profile look slightly more brawny and purposeful. Although the side profile of the hatchback will remain the same, the rear profile might receive new bumper and perhaps a protective covering around the taillamps. There won’t be any big changes made to the interior though however expect the KWID Climber variant to get a new set of upholstery inside to keep things fresh and different from the standard variant. The KWID Climber will be flagship offering from the KWID brand thus expect it to get the same 7-inch infotainment system with navigation unit from the top KWID variant.

The KWID definitely has been a successful product for Renault since it joined the lineup and also has helped the French Automaker to achieve a market share of 4.5% by the end of 2016.

Both Renault KWID & Datsun redi-GO Hatchback Recalled

Both the cars share the same drivetrain

Renault and Datsun both have issued a recall of their respective hatchbacks the Redi-GO and the KWID recently. The latest recall has been issued to rectify a faulty fuel hose and clip which could result in disruption in fuel supply to the engine which might result in disrupted fuel supply.

The recall has been issued for both the KWID as well as the Datsun redi-GO hatchback because both this car shares the same components under the skin.

Renault has recalled a total of 50, 000 units of the car which were produced in between October 2015 and May 2016. In case of the Datsun redi-GO the cars produced in between June and May 2016 were only affected so which leads to a total of 932 units. 2016 Global NCAP Crash Test Results Of The Honda Mobilio & Renault KWID

We can assure you wont be overwhelmed on reading the report

After the shocking test results last year of the Indian cars at the Global NCAP tests the same organisation tested two more Indian cars recently and we must add the results were not very pleasing once again.

Global NCAP crash tested two different variants of the Honda Mobilio and a top end variant of the Renault KWID hatchback which was fitted with highest safety equipment provided by Renault for the hatchback recently at their testing facility. The results of the recent crash test still definitely once again are a wakeup call for all the Indian customers as well as the car manufacturers.

In the past Global NCAP tested the standard Renault KWID hatchback which was not equipped with airbags and it received 0 rating when it came to occupant protection. After the shocking test result Renault made some changes to their updated entry level hatchback with some of the latest set of improvement. The KWID hatchback was assessed again in the frontal impact test but this time it was tested with the latest set of improvements but unfortunately it still scored 1 star for adult protection.

The other car which was tested was the Mobilio MPV which also was quite a popular choice for the Indian customers. The crash test facility tested two separate versions of the Mobilio, while the first one was a base variant of the MPV the second version was equipped with two set of airbags for the front and side passenger.

The base variant of the Mobilio achieved 0 star ratings while the second variant which was equipped with dual front airbags received three star ratings.

David Ward, Secretary General of Global NCAP commented that Renault has made limited progress when it comes to safety of the passengers because they should be offering airbags not as an option but as standard, while Honda too should provide airbags not as an option but as standard because with the airbags the car was able to score 3 stars for the occupant safety.

Renault KWID 1.0 Litre VS Rivals Specs

Renault KWID 1.0 Litre VS Rivals Specs

Find out where the KWID 1.0 Litre stands

Renault definitely will leave a huge impact when they actually introduce the 1.0 Litre variant of the KWID hatchback. They already showcased the hatchback at the 2016 Auto expo where it attracted plenty of attention. Only today Renault has also unveiled almost all the details of their soon to be launched hatchback and we have updated all the details available at this moment about the 1.0 Litre KWID in our speculative review.

The KWID 1.0 Litre variant will not look a lot different than the smaller variant and the only way you can differentiate between the two variants is by actually seeing the 1.0 Litre badge positioned just beneath the C pillar of the hatch and also by the chequered flag positioned towards the lower portion of the front doors on either side of the hatchback. Inside there won’t be too much change either, the more powerful variant will get the same equipment level as found in the 800 cc variant.

We are actually bit disappointed with the safety features provided with the 1.0 Litre variant of the KWID because like we all have expected the more powerful variant will perhaps get ABS or EBD but unfortunately the hatchback is getting neither of them. What was even surprising is also the fact the driver side airbag will be available as an option while there is absolutely no provision of a passenger side airbag.

Coming to the powertrain the KWID 1.0 Litre variant will be powered by the 1.0 Litre, 3 cylinder SCe petrol unit which will churn out about 68 Ps of peak power and 91 Nm of torque. The engine will be paired to a 5 speed manual transmission as standard while there will also be an AMT transmission on offer at a later stage.

The new KWID 1.0 Litre variant will compete with the Maruti Alto K10, Hyundai Eon 1.0 Litre, Tata Tiago and the hatchback with the most powerful engine amongst this segment the Datsun GO.

Below provided is the entire tech spec of the Renault KWID 1.l0 Litre and its above mentioned rivals

Renault Kwid based compact sedan will be based on the Renault-Nissan developed CMF-A platform

Renault Kwid is one revolutionary compact sedan in Indian market which has created a whole new segment in the Indian market. Which is why, we have seen the introduction of the Mahindra KUV100 later.

Now overwhelmed with the success of the Renault Kwid the French auto manufacturer is planning to introduce a few more models in different segments which will be based on the Kwid hatchback. In that case the new Kwid based models will be benefitted from Kwid’s look and name as well, just like what Ford did earlier with the Figo Aspire. Incidentally, Ford launched the Aspire sedan initially with the Figo nameplate, and later planned to drop the Figo name from the sedan’s badge. Meanwhile Renault Kwid based car’s lineup will consist of a compact sedan and a compact SUV as well, both the segments are very popular in India.

The Renault Kwid based compact sedan is under development and it is codenamed as the LBC. Once launched as a production model, the car will directly compete with the likes of Maruti-Suzuki Swift Dzire, Volkswagen Ameo, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire, Hyundai Xcent and Tata Zest.

2016 Global NCAP Crash Tests Once Again Proved That We Are Still Driving Tin Cans

The crash tests were done under #SaferCarsforIndia campaign

Global NCAP is an independent body who conducts crash safety test on various cars across the world. They came into the limelight when they tested five of the most popular small family cars of the India including the Tata Nano, Maruti Alto800, Hyundai i10, Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo back in the year 2014. All the Indian popular hatchbacks scored miserably at the 2014 Crash test raising a big question about safety of their occupants.

Now after almost two years of that horrible incident, Global NCAP once again proved that the Indian manufacturers has not taken any big step after that horrific crash test results two years ago towards the safety of the passengers.

Global NCAP recently conducted a new test on five different popular Indian cars this time and the results are unexpectedly shocking. The five cars which were tested this time included the popular Renault Kwid, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Maruti Suzuki Eeco, Hyundai Eon and Mahindra Scorpio. Unfortunately all of them failed the test miserable leaving a big question once again about the safety of the adult occupants inside the car during the time of crash. What is even more disappointing is also the fact that these were the results after increasing awareness about vehicle safety in India over the past two years.

So why the Indian manufacturers are still making sub standard cars which are not even able to provide even the basic safety features for its occupants? What is even more shocking as well as surprising is also the fact that these cars were crash tested at speeds of 64 kph which is an average speed on our highways. Indian roads are considered one of the most dangerous and unsafe roads of the world but still we are lagging far behind when it comes to road safety. Although many auto makers are providing airbags nowadays even in the base variant but there are still many automakers that are not moreover a big question is also raised about the structural integrity of these passenger cars.

The KWID 1.0 Litre will definitely be better equipped hatch than the less powerful variant and thus expect it to get dual airbags for the front seat passengers for the safety of the passengers inside. While expect the rest of the things to carried over from the smaller hatachback. The KWID 1.0 Litre variant will compete directly against the Alto K10 and the more powerful Hyundai Eon and will be the second car in its segment to offer an AMT transmission after the K10.

The compact hatchback has a butch muscular design, a crossover SUV like appearance in the compact hatchback segment. It offers plenty of features to attract people toward it. The ride and handling quality is pretty good, while the fuel consumption is also very economic.

Compact hatchback segment of Indian automobile market is the most competitive segment and since Maruti 800 brought some revolutionary changes to this segment there was no major changes. OVERVIEW 2015 Renault KWID

2015 Renault KWID

Renault has launched the Pulse hatch couple of years ago in India and to our surprise it didn’t performed as we all would have expected although that hatchback had pretty much everything to it to make it work.

Now the French auto giant quickly needed something to pull the crowd and reach to a wider audience. After a lot of research they actually did showcase a concept at the 2014 Auto Expo and it was called the KWID concept. The KWID concept looked like a compact Crossover and we were actually delighted when we found out that the production variant turned out to be an entry level hatchback.

Say hello to the KWID hatchback which will take on its competitors like Hyundai Eon and Maruti Alto K10. You definitely would have already guessed by now how this hatchback will look like in flesh didn’t you when I mentioned its competitor’s name? But if you already created an image in your mind that it will definitely look boring then you are wrong.

What differentiates Renault’s entry level hatchback from the rest is its looks and features. Who would have ever imagined that a budget hatchback offering can actually look like a Crossover? Or it may even get a touchscreen infotainment system inside and full digital instrument cluster?

The KWID is also based on a completely new CMF-A (Common Module Family – Affordable) platform. This platform beside being affordable can also support various body styles as well including a sedan, MPV and even SUV’s. The KWID also happens to be the first Renault-Nissan alliance product to actually use the new CMF-A platform. Apart from the new platform the KWID is also actually powered by a completely new 800 cc, three cylinder petrol engine which promises an impressive amount of power and also fuel efficiency at the same time.

The KWID is a Global product which is actually being manufactured at the Oragadam (Tamil Nadu) plant; it has high localization level (98 %) which has helped price it really aggressively.
