Renault was not at all popular when they launched the Koleos SUV in the year 2011 which was based on the crossover design but after the European car maker launched their product Duster in the year 2012, which we all know is a compact SUV it became popular instantly and people started to gain some trust on this particular manufacturer. Now after almost 3 years Renault once again want to take a second chance with their premium SUV Koleos and decided to launch a facelifted version soon in our Indian market. The facelifted version of the SUV was reveled at the sixth International Buenos Aires Motor Show.

The Koleos when launched earlier had to face some serious competition from the segment leader Toyota Fortuner which was a more rugged and tough looking SUV and quite frankly the Koleos looked like its younger sister. Now that the times has changed and Indian people have become quite open and welcoming new brands and their products, it is good time for Renault to gain their foothold in the Indian premium SUV segment.

The Renault Koleos was always a powerful SUV and the facelifted version although is powered by the same 2.0-litre diesel engine but it now generates even more power and torque than its predecessor which is good news for many but does the new facelifted version have what it takes to compete with other SUV’s of its segment?

UPDATE 29/01/14 Renault launched the facelifted Koleos in the Indian market today. The prices has been provided below.

Renault Unlisted The Koleos SUV & Fluence Sedan From Their Official Website

Both the SUV and sedan has been discontinued from the Indian market

From what it looks like Renault India has discontinued the Koleos SUV from the Indian market. They have removed the SUV from their Indian official website as well Apart from the SUV it also seems that Renault has also discontinued their D segment sedan Fluence as well because this sedan too has been removed from their official website.

Although Renault hasn’t released any official statement yet but perhaps this was the right move for them. Both the Koleos and the Fluence does not have many takers in the Indian market mainly because of their steep pricing compared to their rivals. Some reports suggests that the manufacturer now wants to shift their focus entirely towards those particular products which has atleast 80 percent localisation and not to those products which are completely knocked down (CKD) and semi-knocked down (SKD) units.

Although the Koleos was assembled in India at the auto manufacturers plant but the kits were imported and as a result of all that the Koleos was actually priced way above its rivals which was the main reason of its low sales figures.

Renault has also plans to launch some new products which will be heavily localized and which also means that the overall prices will be priced quite aggressively.

2012 Renault Koleos

2012 Renault Koleos

What Renault is doing is an all too familiar a story. Nissan did the same with the Teana and the X-Trail before launching the Micra and Volkswagen too went the same way with the Jetta and Passat before launching the Polo. All new manufacturers first try to build a premium manufacturer image before they start to get in their money spinning hatchbacks or mid-size sedans. The Koleos and the Fluence are supposed to do just that while Renault sorts out its dealership network and brings in a car under 8lakhs.

OVERVIEW 2011 Renault Koleos

2011 Renault Koleos

You’re right if you think that the Renault Koleos is a stop gap solution for the French manufacturer. Their dealerships are still finding their way around the country and the brand is still fine printing its strategy for India. Renault is still a relatively unknown commodity in India and that would probably remain till they launch a small or a mid size car in the country. Their only other launch has been the Fluence which is slowly making the brand recognisable but that’s restricted only to the metros. Renault is committed in making its Indian innings count and the French manufacturer made the international debut of the facelift version of the Koleos in India a few days before the official launch in China. With the Koleos Renault wants to build on its upmarket brand image in the same way Nissan did it with the Teana and the X-Trail. Priced at Rs22,99,000 ex-showroom New Delhi, where does the Koleos stand compared to the other soft roaders in the country?
