Renault’s latest offering for SUV loving Indian market

Renault is a pretty popular brand in India. Their products like Duster, Kwid has garnered immense popularity in the country. Compact SUVs being one of the most popular segments in Indian market Renault is planning another compact crossover in the segment, which is based on the European Renault Captur, but christened as “Kaptur”. The Kaptur will be manufactured in Russia, and in the Russian language the “K” is associated with the key characteristics of the vehicle: high quality (Качество), comfortable (Комфорт) and good looking (Красота).

Now the crossover will sport Renault’s modern generation design language which is appealing and very much urban. The car is codenamed as HHA, and it is a 7 seater premium crossover based on the fourth generation Clio. Initially, it will be launched in Brazilian market, and later we hope Renault will launch the car in India around late 2017. It will also launch in the emerging markets like Russia and Indonesia. Once launched, it will face tough competition from Hyundai Creta, Mahindra XUV500 and Honda BR-V. It might not adorn the badge “Kaptur” in India although.

Before Renault India launches the new crossover in the country, let’s take a sneak peek at the car.

India Bound Renault Captur Crossover Scores 4 Out Of 5 Stars In Latin NCAP

The car has scored fairly in terms of overall safety standard but will it get the same safety features for Indian market

The crash test results of the India-bound Renault Captur (Kaptur) are out, and quite honestly it scored pretty well in the overall crash test conducted by Latin NCAP. The Renault 5 door SUV was able to score 4 out of 5 stars for adult safety and 3 out of 5 stars for Child Safety.

The version that was tested was equipped with four airbags, electronic stability control, Isofix system for securing child seats in the back seat and seat belts with pretensioners. During the time of frontal impact, the Captur offered adequate protection to the driver and front passenger neck area. The chest protection of the driver was marginal while the passenger was good. Both the front passenger’s knees were also safe. The driver tibias showed adequate protection while the passengers showed good protection. The bodyshell of the SUV was also rated stable during the side impact. The side head-thorax airbag was offered good protection to the adult to the head, abdomen and pelvis area.

As far as the child safety of the SUV is concerned the child seat for the 3year-old child was not able to prevent forward movement during the frontal impact. However, the during side impact both the child dummies were well protected. The Captur also offers a 3 point belts in all seating positions as standard, and all of them met international technical standards. Thus like we already mentioned above the SUV was able to score 3 stars concerning Child safety standard.

Renault To Launch Kaptur Crossover Soon

Renault To Launch Kaptur Crossover Soon

The newest Crossover from the French Automaker will hit the Indian shores this by year end

While Renault’s small cars were not able to impress the Indian customers their compact SUV has done the job perfectly. Their popular offering the compact SUV space came in the form of the Duster launched back in 2012. This is definitely counted as one of their most successful product in the Indian market. Now it seems like Renault is all set to add another Crossover to their lineup. Called the Kaptur, now this particular name will sound familiar to you all because Renault already sells the car in the markets of Europe but the Crossover is called Captur there.

Now the Crossover which will be sold in the Indian market will although look identical to the ones sold in the European market but it will be based on a completely different platform here in India, while the European spec Captur underpins Clio’s platform but in India, it will be based on Duster’s platform. Now according to the reports, this has been done deliberately keeping the developing market in mind. Renault definitely has plans to keep the pricing in check and thus also will be looking to share many of its parts as well with some of their existing cars of the Indian market.

Renault imported Kaptur crossover in India for R&D purpose

Renault imported Kaptur crossover in India for R&D purpose

Renault unveiled the Captur inspired Kaptur earlier this year in Moscow

Renault has taken quite an aggressive strategy in India, which reflects the French automaker’s ambition in the Indian market. The company has recently imported the India bound Renault Kaptur from Brazil for R&D purposes. The Kaptur will be positioned above the very popular Renault Duster in India.

Design wise the car sports similar profile like the Euro spec Renault Captur, with little bit of tweaks albeit. The car sports a dual tone exterior with the front fascia sporting a wider grille with horizontal slats. The sharp headlamps sport LED daytime running lights, C shaped LED lights. Unveiled in Moscow earlier this year Renault Kaptur is based on the Duster’s M0 platform which will help the automaker to price the car aggressively in Indian market as the platform has been developed with higher localization ratio.

The interior of the car sports an upmarket feel with three spoke multifunction steering wheel, sleek and unique looking instrument cluster, a 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system at the centre console. The power source will be a 1.6 litre petrol engine and a 1.5 litre diesel engine respectively. Transmission duties will be done by a 6 speed manual gearbox, while there will be a 6 speed AMT gearbox as well.
