2017 Renault Kwid Compact Sedan (Renault LBC)
Renault Kwid based compact sedan will be based on the Renault-Nissan developed CMF-A platform
Renault Kwid is one revolutionary compact sedan in Indian market which has created a whole new segment in the Indian market. The hatchback with SUV stance was unthinkable before the Kwid, but when the French automaker introduced the car, customers not only loved it, but the auto industry followed the trend. Which is why, we have seen the introduction of the Mahindra KUV100 later.
Now overwhelmed with the success of the Renault Kwid the French auto manufacturer is planning to introduce a few more models in different segments which will be based on the Kwid hatchback. In that case the new Kwid based models will be benefitted from Kwid’s look and name as well, just like what Ford did earlier with the Figo Aspire. Incidentally, Ford launched the Aspire sedan initially with the Figo nameplate, and later planned to drop the Figo name from the sedan’s badge. Meanwhile Renault Kwid based car’s lineup will consist of a compact sedan and a compact SUV as well, both the segments are very popular in India.
The Renault Kwid based compact sedan is under development and it is codenamed as the LBC. Once launched as a production model, the car will directly compete with the likes of Maruti-Suzuki Swift Dzire, Volkswagen Ameo, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire, Hyundai Xcent and Tata Zest.

The Kwid possess an unmatchable appearance with its aggressive design. The Kwid based compact sedan will also boast the same design, with the major visible difference in form of the extended boot section. The front fascia of the car will boast the same 3D mesh grille, sharp headlamps positioned in a manner, which will make the headlamps and front grille appear as a single unit. The diamond pattern brand logo will be positioned at the centre of the grille. On the other hand the front grille might come different looking as well with the horizontally slated less aggressive appearance and with some shiny chrome garnishing. The lower fascia will be muscular with large and aggressive air intake and round fog lamps at both sides. Expect the front fascia to come with the same taller stance like the hatchback.
The side profile would come similar with the hatchback except the extended boot section. The compact sedan would get distinctive alloy wheels, while the side body cladding of the hatchback would disappear in the sedan and it will be simpler than the hatchback. At the back the car would sport new set of taillamps, distinctive from the hatchback, while the boot section might come a bit lifted as well. Dimensionally the car is likely to come positioned under the sub-4 metre compact rule, as it will help Renault to keep the sedan’s price lower and competitive against its rivals. Like its hatchback sibling the sedan will come with 180 mm of ground clearance.
Among the rivals the Maruti-Suzuki Swift Dzire is the strongest one as this is the best selling and most popular compact sedan in the country. Talking about the design, the Swift Dzire looks more suave than the Kwid based sedan’s aggressive appearance, while the Ford Figo Aspire or soon to be known Ford Aspire will be much tougher looking car with its aggressive and bold front fascia and bit of the muscular design. Speaking about competitors, the Volkswagen Ameo among all looks most suave with its sleek front fascia and Vento like appearance from distance. No wonder, these cars will get tough competition from the very aggressive looking Kwid based compact sedan.
The interior of the Renault Kwid based compact sedan would come similar looking with top end trim sporting a multifunction steering wheel, unique layered looking fully digital instrument cluster, 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system. Compare to the hatchback the sedan might offer a bit spacious cabin along with some added features like climate control, arm rest etc. The Kwid hatchback offers 300 litres of boot space, and the sedan is also expected to come with similar boot space.
Among the competitors the Volkswagen Ameo gets the most feature laden interior, which comes with a dual tone theme sporting multifunction steering wheel, dual analog dial and a TFT display consisting instrument cluster, 2 DIN touchscreen infotainment system. The Maruti-Suzuki Swift Dzire also gets an upmarket appearance inside the dual tone cabin. Up front inside the cabin of Ford Figo Aspire the car gets multifunction steering wheel, three analog dial consisting instrument cluster, a heavy looking centre console similar to the outgoing Ford EcoSport’s centre console. It looks a bit upmarket as well.
It is very likely that the Kwid based compact sedan will get power from the 1.0 litre SCe petrol engine which does the duty under the hood of Kwid 1.0 L hatchback, which was unveiled at the 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo. Being based on the Renault & Nissan jointly developed lightweight CMF-A platform the Kwid based sedan will come as fuel efficient as the Kwid hatchback is. The 1.0 litre four cylinder engine is capable to churn out around 78 PS of peak power and 100 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duty will be done by a 5 speed manual gearbox, while the car would be available with an Easy-R AMT gearbox as well, which has been introduced in the facelifted Renault Duster launched earlier this year. The Kwid offers 25.17 kmpl of very impressive fuel economy, and expect the upcoming compact sedan would offer similar fuel efficiency as well. Expecting a diesel variant won’t be much as well, given the fact we Indians are very fond of diesel.
Speaking about the competitors the Volkswagen Ameo gets both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol Ameo is powered by a 1.2 litre MPI engine mated to a 5 speed manual transmission and churns out 75 PS of peak power and 110 Nm. The diesel variant is yet to be launched, but it is expected to be powered by a 1.5 litre TDI engine paired with a 7 speed DSG automatic gearbox which generates 90 PS of peak power and 230 Nm of peak torque.
Ford Figo Aspire is available in three different engine options, which include two petrol engines and a diesel unit. The smaller petrol engine is a 1.2 litre Ti-VCT unit mated to a 5 speed manual transmission which 88 PS of peak power and 112 Nm of peak torque. The larger petrol engine is a 1.5 litre Ti-VCT engine which is paired with a 6 speed dual clutch PowerShift transmission and kicks out 112 PS of peak power and 136 Nm of peak torque. These engines deliver a fuel economy of 18.6 kmpl and 17.2 kmpl respectively. The single diesel engine is a 1.5 litre TDCI Duratorq unit available under the hood of the Ford EcoSport. Mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox this engine pumps out 100 PS of peak power and 215 Nm of peak torque, and delivers a fuel economy of 25.83 kmpl.
The Maruti-Suzuki Swift Dzire is available in both petrol and diesel options. The petrol engine is a 1.2 litre K-Series VVT unit generating 84.3 PS of peak power and 115 Nm of peak torque, while the diesel engine is a 1.3 litre DDiS unit pumping out 75 PS of peak power and 190 Nm of peak torque. There is an AMT gearbox also available for this car alongside the manual transmission.
The Kwid based compact sedan is expected to come featuring safety measures like dual front airbags and ABS, and rear parking sensor as well.
Among its competitors Ford Figo Aspire is certainly the most safety feature laden model which comes with high strength steel frame, dual front airbags, side airbags and curtain airbags for the rear occupants; moreover the ABS, EBD and Hill Assist control. On the other hand the Volkswagen Ameo gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, rear parking sensor. The Maruti-Suzuki Swift Dzire features dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, seat belt warning.
The Renault Kwid based compact sedan is going to be the cheapest sedan and it would create its own segment as well. Expect the car to come priced at around INR. 3 lakh to INR. 5 lakh price range.
Maruti-Suzuki Swift Dzire is the best selling compact sedan of the country. It comes featuring a very practical and upmarket look. The car is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol Swift Dzire gets power from a 1.2 litre K-Series VVT unit generating 84.3 PS of peak power and 115 Nm of peak torque, while the diesel mode gets a 1.3 litre DDiS unit pumping out 75 PS of peak power and 190 Nm of peak torque. There is an AMT gearbox also available for this car alongside the manual transmission.
Ford Figo Aspire is based on the next generation Figo, and the car is available in three different engine options, with two petrol units and a single diesel engine on offer. The car looks aggressive and it comes closest to the Kwid based compact sedan when it is about being bold looking. In very short time the car has achieved popularity. The Ford is about to drop the Figo name soon, an official declaration awaits although.
Ameo is the first India spec compact sedan by Volkswagen which has been designed, developed and produced in the country. The car comes with a front fascia similar to the Volkswagen Polo and the back looks like a chopped off Vento. The car gets several upmarket and attractive features inside the cabin. Power source for the car is a 1.2 litre MPI petrol engine mated to a 5 speed manual transmission churning out 75 PS of peak power and 110 Nm of peak torque.
Renault Kwid based compact sedan would be launched in India sometime around late 2017; and the car will surely look aggressive and bold. The interesting fact is Renault Kwid hatchback created a whole new segment when it was launched last year. The compact sedan based on the Kwid is also expected to create its own sub-4 meter compact sedan segment. Additionally this is going to be the cheapest compact sedan, which makes it more appealing.
Why you should buy Renault Kwid based compact sedan
Renault Kwid has every reason to impress the customers. Honestly, I believe this car is going to bring a radical change in the sub compact sedan segment, which is a very well contested segment in India. The car breaks the trend of suave looking compact sedans. It shows that your regular drive compact sedan can be a SUV like very aggressive car as well. Moreover the cheapest compact sedan tag is always a sweetener as there is absolutely no point for shelling out extra money for a regular sedan. It offers attractive feature like a unique digital display at the instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system, and above all, the very much fuel efficient 1.0 litre SCe engine and the added sweetening by the Easy-R AMT gearbox. But despite looking tough the Kwid has scored zero in Global NCAP crash test. In that case I would like the Kwid based compact sedan to come more rigid and safer, as sedans are considered for family drives. Other than that, this car is surely a good one to buy.
“With the low cost of the CMF-A platform, the Kwid-based sub-4m sedan could be the least expensive sedan in the Indian market, whilst offering a good feature list and a fuel efficient petrol lineup to lure car buyers; similar to the Renault Kwid’s success formula.”
“Expect the Kwid sedan to be feature rich for its price”

- * All new look for a compact sedan.
- * Fuel efficient powertrain with Easy-R AMT.
- * Many people might not prefer a rugged looking sedan.
