Renault was not at all popular when they launched the Koleos SUV in the year 2011 which was based on the crossover design but after the European car maker launched their product Duster in the year 2012, which we all know is a compact SUV it became popular instantly and people started to gain some trust on this particular manufacturer. Now after almost 3 years Renault once again want to take a second chance with their premium SUV Koleos and decided to launch a facelifted version soon in our Indian market. The facelifted version of the SUV was reveled at the sixth International Buenos Aires Motor Show.

The Koleos when launched earlier had to face some serious competition from the segment leader Toyota Fortuner which was a more rugged and tough looking SUV and quite frankly the Koleos looked like its younger sister. Now that the times has changed and Indian people have become quite open and welcoming new brands and their products, it is good time for Renault to gain their foothold in the Indian premium SUV segment.

The Renault Koleos was always a powerful SUV and the facelifted version although is powered by the same 2.0-litre diesel engine but it now generates even more power and torque than its predecessor which is good news for many but does the new facelifted version have what it takes to compete with other SUV’s of its segment?

Koleos was never an aggressive looking SUV instead it looked quite sophisticated and elegant. The new facelifted version of Koleos received Renault’s new styling identity and to make it look more SUV like Renault has added a new bigger front grille which has lots of chrome in it and stretches to the headlamps, it also gets a larger Renault emblem placed in the middle of it. The side profile gets new door mirrors which are equipped with LED side indicators beside the new chrome strips and 5 spoke alloy wheels. One will find hardly any change at the rear of the SUV.

Take a look at it and you cannot exactly call it a hardcore offroader like the other SUV’s of its segment. Still somehow it has got its own unique appeal.

Step in the interior of this new facelifted version and you will notice there are hardly any changes made to it, however the driver side passenger now gets power seats along with the driver seat which is also height adjustable so that the person driving the vehicle can choose their suitable driving position.

The two tone interior looks sophisticated but somehow it feels quite ordinary for a vehicle which is priced above 20 lakh rupees but the cabin surely will impress you with its interior space and storage areas and I mean some serious storage areas. At the front there is a chilled 15-litre glove box which definitely is a practical addition from Renault; the second row passenger gets flip open trays which again is an intelligent addition to this beside that there are storage space even at the back of the front seats and also on the doors and because there is no third row seats in the Koleos the boot space is huge at the rear. What is even more interesting is that the 60/40 second row seats can be split open to create some more space at the rear of the SUV. The split tailgate at the rear helps in easy loading and unloading of luggage they are even useful when the vehicle is parked at a cramped area.

The second row seats are quite spacious and there is ample of leg and head room for the occupants inside there is even an AC vent for the rear passenger which makes you feel even special inside the SUV.

Overall the Koleos interiors are spacious and there is plenty of space to store your belongings even if you are taking a long trip with your family.

ENGINE DETAILS

When it comes to the engine Renault has stored some surprise here also for the consumers. The earlier Koleos was powered by a 2.0 liter engine which generated some 150 hp of maximum power and 32.6 Kgm of torque. This time Renault has tweaked the engine and now there will be two version available the base 2x4 variants gets the same engine which generates the same power output whereas the top end 4x4 variant although is powered by the same 2.0 liter engine but still generates more power than the old Koleos, 171 bhp at 3750 rpm and 36.7 kgm of torque at 2000 rpm to be exact, the engine has been mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox.

The SUV engine was surely not the smoothest when it was revved hard some of the noise even sipped inside the cabin which was not a good thing, there was even complains about turbo lag when the SUV was driven within the city traffic at lower speeds or while overtaking on the highways. Hopefully Renault has taken care of those problems this time.

RIDE AND HANDLING

Koleos strength lied in its handling and ride quality, the SUV was one of the most well behaved SUV that you wind on road today. It uses MacPherson struts at the front and multilink at the rear of the SUV which provided smooth ride for the occupants inside doing its duty of soaking up bumps and potholes quite effectively. The steering of this SUV makes its handling a lot easier although there is slight amount of body roll at the corners but the rest of the SUV handles like a car.

It even offers a high ground clearance which easily helps overcoming hurdles and rough sections quite easily.

When it comes to competition the Koleos has plenty of it in the Indian market. There is the big and beefy Toyota Fortuner which you all are quite aware about then there is the newly launched fourth generation Honda CR-V but another tough competitor that Renault will have to face is the new generation Hyundai Santa Fe which will also soon make its way into our Indian market.

So we have seen that the facelifted Renault Koleos brings both good and bad things with it. Renault has added minor changes to its exterior and its interior but the biggest change that you will find in this SUV is in its engine which now generates even more power and torque output. If you want a Chauffer driven SUV then there is no doubt that this is the ideal SUV for you because it has a good reputation in the ride quality department and the rear seats are definitely comfortable and provides plenty of space.

New Renault Koleos is equipped with the new in-dash Renault R-Link multimedia system complete with seven-inch touchscreen display. In terms of active safety, and to help prevent accidents from happening in the first place, New Renault Koleos is equipped with ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist, ESC and understeer control. Even before the latter is triggered, the all-wheel drive management system is programmed to take corrective action by adjusting the front/rear torque split should over- or under-steer be detected.

On the passive safety front, the vehicle’s structure incorporates programmed front and rear crumple zones, while the cabin is engineered to serve as a protective cell in an accident.New Renault Koleos is equipped with a wide range of occupant protection equipment, including six airbags, load limiter seat belts for the front and outer rear seats, pretensioners for the front seat belts and Isofix child seat anchorage for the outer rear seats. In a rear impact, the head rests and seats of Renault Koleos have been designed to ensure a very high level of occupant protection.

A practical SUV with genuine 4x4 ability

New Koleos can be ordered with two- or four-wheel drive transmission.Its flexible, high-torque engines provide it with real off-road ability.Its length and width are 4.52 and 1.85 metres respectively.It is a comfortable SUV which is a pleasure to drive in and about town.

Its contained footprint, power steering and responsiveness ensure a pleasant, stress-free ride in built-up areas.The 4x4 version delivers genuine off-road ability thanks to its ‘All mode 4x4 I’ transmission developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The transmission can be used in one of three modes: ‘Auto’, ‘LOCK’ or ‘2WD’.With the Auto mode selected, the front/rear torque split is automatically adjusted as a function of available grip.On normal roads, torque is delivered to the front wheels only.Should traction or grip be lost, a proportion of the torque is directed to the rear wheels.In extreme conditions, torque is split evenly front and rear.When starting, torque is divided among the four wheels.

The way torque is distributed is controlled by an electronic coupler based on data received front the ECU and a variety of sensors (wheel speed, acceleration, steering wheel angle and accelerator pedal position).In LOCK mode, the driver can electronically lock the transmission in all-wheel drive when driving on snow, mud or dirt, for example. In this case, 50 percent of torque is transferred to the rear wheels using a switch positioned on the dashboard.In 2WD mode, the driver can lock the transmission in two-wheel drive.
