REVEALED: Range Rover Evoque Convertible - The Dawn of a New Era in Luxury Convertible Driving

DATE: 09.11.15

Having first teased the public with candy-coloured wireframe sculptures, Land Rover has finally revealed the all-new Range Rover Evoque Convertible to the world in spectacular style.

The newest member of the Range Rover family lowered its roof for the first time in a blaze of dazzling light using state-of-the-art projection technology, transforming the darkness of a cold winter night into the golden glow of warm summer sunshine.
The stunning scene was set against the backdrop of the University of the Arts London’s famous Central Saint Martins building in Granary Square, Kings Cross, London.

The projection covered an area the size of approximately 10 tennis courts using twenty projectors, each with a combined brightness of 400,000 lumens, the equivalent of 40,000 candles. The spectacular reveal also incorporated Granary Square’s innovative and high-tech water feature comprising of 1,080 fountain jets and 4,320 individual low energy LEDs, with each jet individually controlled and lit using a giant pixel map to invoke the mood of the changing seasons.

With design at its core, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible is supremely capable, has space for four adults, a proper boot and even an innovative ski hatch for road trips to Courchevel or Aspen. This is sophisticated roof-down all-season motoring for drivers from all corners of the globe.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, said: "The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is a symbol of refinement, luxury and creative design. It’s perfectly suited to the urban surroundings of London. The Evoque’s elegant design proportions lend themselves to the creation of a Convertible, and it’s fitting to reveal the vehicle against the backdrop of one of the world’s leading centres for art and design education here in the creative hub of London."

UAL is Europe’s largest university specialising in art, design, fashion and the performing arts. UAL is made up of six colleges including Central Saint Martins which are world-renowned for progressive art, design and creative thought.

Since its launch in 2010, Evoque has changed the luxury SUV landscape. Now Land Rover’s best-selling model with close to 500,000 sold to date, the compact Range Rover’s progressive design has redefined the perception of compact SUVs. Packed with advanced technology and equipped with fuel efficient petrol and diesel engines, the Evoque has revolutionised the sector.

Design is inextricably linked to Evoque. The distinctive shape was introduced to the world for the first time using wireframe sculptures in 2010 - an artistic theme carried forward to 2015 in the build up to the reveal of the latest member of the Range Rover family. Six new Convertible wireframe sculptures were first shown in London’s most exclusive addresses earlier in October, and today formed part of the production model’s dramatic debut.

The reveal of Evoque Convertible also marks the start of a new partnership between Land Rover and the BORN Summit of Creativity (born.com). BORN is a unique crowdfunding business set up to commercially mobilise the world’s global creative talent. The Summit of Creativity is an annual celebration of the most promising creative ideas from around the world, reflecting Land Rover’s commitment to fostering and nurturing the talent of tomorrow.

In the run up to the BORN Summit of Creativity, which takes place in Courchevel, France, in March 2016, Land Rover and BORN will release a series of short films exploring the processes and challenges of established creative leaders, and how they are encouraging emerging talent.

Whitley, UK, 02 March 2015 - Land Rover has confirmed the world’s first premium compact SUV convertible will go on sale in 2016 by releasing a unique underground testing film.
Forty metres below the streets of London, UK, the first prototype of Land Rover’s new Range Rover Evoque Convertible was granted exclusive access to the 26-mile (42km) network of Crossrail tunnels for a development test with a difference. Engineers were allowed the opportunity to drive the disguised Evoque Convertible with its roof lowered in complete privacy.
The short film begins with the highly-capable convertible being lowered into the tunnel network by crane, before negotiating a range of obstacles through the 6.2 metre diameter tunnel.
Murray Dietsch, Director of Land Rover Programmes said: "The tunnels are still under construction, so we had a unique opportunity to explore the vehicle’s all-terrain ability in unchartered territory."

The Range Rover Evoque is no stranger to subterranean adventure. At its launch in 2011 the five-door variant was driven through Edge Hill Tunnel in Liverpool, the first tunnel in the world to be bored beneath a major city.

Land Rover will announce further details about its exclusive new premium compact SUV Convertible later this year. It will be built alongside the five door and coupe Evoque at Land Rover’s Halewood plant in the UK and will be on sale in 2016.

Land Rover started their unique promotional campaign for the upcoming Range Rover Evoque convertible already. The British auto manufacturer has placed full sized ‘wireframe’ sculptures of their upcoming car Evoque Convertible at some of the iconic streets of London.

The Bespoke structures were placed before some of the iconic London locations which includes Harrods department store on Brompton Road, Knightsbridge and in notable Mayfair addresses. These particular wiresframe sculptures were designed by Land Rover’s very own Design team using advanced computer modeling to actually accurately create the shape of their upcoming Evoque convertible.

Land Rover created a total of six wire frames structures which were then positioned at different places which will give people a chance to actually see and get an idea of how this car will look in its natural environment. These 1:1 structures also have 3D wheels and even front and rear seats. These wireframes will also begin global tour to attract attention of people until Land Rover introduced the Evoque Convertible in November.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, said: "The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is perfectly suited to the urban surroundings of a city like London and it’s the perfect place to showcase the world’s first luxury compact SUV convertible. The locations chosen reflect the refined and luxurious lifestyle of an Evoque Convertible customer - two attributes this vehicle delivers in abundance."

Range Rover Evoque to be built locally. Price revision on the horizon

Ever since, the government of India brought in the import policy reforms, international car makers have had a tough time of selling their products at reasonable prices. The high import taxes meant, the government wanted to promote local production. However, setting up a standalone factory to mass produce luxury cars isn’t as simple as it sounds.

It takes years, before a stage is reached where the rising demand and competition dictates the price of the products. Jaguar-Land Rover has now reached a phase where the demand for their products has skyrocketed. To keep up with the competition, mostly the Germans who already have a stable base here in India, JLR began assembling select models locally.

Next up for local production will be the Jaguar XJ limousine, as mentioned by Dr. Ralph Speth, CEO Jaguar-Land Rover. But, before we get a "made-in-India" XJ, the Range Rover Evoque will be brought in as CKD which will help JLR revise the price of the popular SUV.

Jaguar Land Rover has made huge investments to setup more volumes here in India. Their commitment towards the Indian market has paid off as the brand grew by 21 percent, making it the fastest growing luxury brand in the country. Having said that, there is still a long way to go for the British marques as it still lacks the sheer volumes of the German brands.

With the launch of the updated Range Rover Evoque, it is clear that the boffins at Land Rover couldn’t update any aspect of the design. Why? Simply because it’s perfect. Though the car was launched way back in 2011, even today the design takes our breath away. So, they thought that it was best to stick to a design that has garnered more attention than any Range Rover has.

The launch of the Evoque in the Indian market was a very warm one with people being astounded as to how its design decimated the dreary cars that people commonly see on any road. Whenever it passed by, it was indeed quite the head turner. And since some people like to look appealing, why not do it in style with an Evoque.

Okay, we should stop talking about the design now because while some people were blown off by it, there are many others who did find some aspects of the previous Evoque quite a bit disappointing.
