Porsche's Next Generation Boxster and Cayman To Be Called 718 Boxster & 718 Cayman

Porsche’s Next Generation Boxster and Cayman To Be Called 718 Boxster & 718 Cayman

In an official press release Porcshe confirmed that their next generation Boxster and Cayman Sportscars will carry the 718 initials infront of their names. Apart from carrying the same names both this mid-engine sportscars will also carry many visual and technical similarities as well. As far as the drivetrains are concerned Porsche already gave everyone a hint that they will be carrying a powerful four-cylinder flat engines which also get turbochargers. Obviously the Roaster variant of the car will be positioned above the Coupe variant like they already have in the 911 model lineup.

The reason behind Porsche selecting the 718 name is perhaps to pay a tribute to the 718 model series which used the Four-cylinder flat engines. The 718 was the successor of the legendary Porsche 550 Spyder, which too used four cylinder flat engine setup and that has actually helped them to win number of races including the 12-hour race in Sebring in 1960 or at the European Hill Climb Championship that ran between 1958 and 1961.

The 718 also won number of championships itself; it won the first position not once, not twice but thrice at Italian Targa Florio race in Sicily in between 1959 and 1960. It also won 24 Hours of Le Mans race 1958. The 718 RSK produces 142 Hp of peak power which helps the car to score a class victory. Recently in the year 2015 Porsche won the endurance race in Le Mans and the WEC world endurance championship with the 919 Hybrid race car which also uses a two-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine.

As far as the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman are concerned they will be introduced in the International market in the year 2016.

That means they might debut during the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The sports cars are also expected to get a lot of new safety features and convenience equipments.

There is also a rumour that the Porsche Cayman, for the first time, will be positioned below the Boxster as the entry level sports car. This is because the Boxster has always out-sold the Cayman. Next Gen Boxter and Cayman To Be Renamed As Porsche 718

Porsche decided to launch an entry level model dubbed 718 which will sit below their Boxster model back in the month of June but somehow due to various reasons the project was cancelled but Porsche actually thought of not cancelling the entire project completely and instead decided to use the 718 Nomenclature.

According to Automobile Magazine the 718 name will be used in their next generation Boxter and Cayman. The entry level model that was planned earlier was said that it would have carried a new 4 cylinder engine mounted to the chassis while it was also said that the chassis would have been shared with Audi but not all hope is lost. The Boxster will be launched with the same smaller four cylinder engine and will be priced lower than other models.

Expect the new car to be launched in the year 2016 and it too will enter our Indian markets for sure.

OVERVIEW 2013 Porsche Cayman

2013 Porsche Cayman

The Porsche Cayman began life as a Boxster with a hard top. Initially, it did face some ridicule from critics who thought it was built to fill a gap in the market and that it looked particularly boring.

Over the past few years, Porsche has tweaked it, so much so that it can now be clearly differentiated from its convertible cousin. Making the Cayman any faster, meant it could eat up into the more expensive 911’s market. That however, did not stop Porsche from trying.

Since, it uses the Boxster’s mid-engine rear wheel drive layout, the Cayman does benefit hugely from this making it quite exciting around corners. The 2013 Cayman is also lighter and thus more agile. Porsche has also made substantial improvements on the fuel economy front.

The 2013 Porsche Cayman uses a 2.7-liter flat-six, while the Cayman S gets a more meatier 3.4-liter version. In India, the 2013 Porsche Cayman S is priced at INR 93.9 lakh ex-showroom Delhi.

OVERVIEW 2012 Porsche Cayman

2012 Porsche Cayman

The Cayman was rumoured to be a hard-topped Boxster but it turned out to be much more. Many consider it to be the most rounded Porsche of all and the manufacturer is very careful of not confusing the Cayman to be a substitute to the 911. The Porsche Cayman is entirely different and brilliant. It is a Porsche in every respect and automobile experts consider it to be the finest handling cars on sale. The Cayman was made to add to Porsche’s ever-expanding model range which is the reason few people were surprised when Porsche announced in 2005 its coupe version of the mid-engine Boxster. Initial reactions to the Cayman however were far from encouraging but Porsche has clearly worked to regain the Cayman image back. Prices for the Cayman start from Rs 58.50lakh to Rs 75.67lakh ex-showroom New Delhi.
