If you talk about hybrid powertrains, people will readily tell you hybrid cars are not fast enough, not beautiful. Well, that might be true in some cases, but not entirely. However, this decade has been the decade of hybrids. Plenty of hybrid cars have made their appearance in front of us. Porsche being one of the famed sports car makers also tried their hand in the hybrid segment. They made some beautiful vehicles which are not only beautiful and faster, but also powered by hybrid drivetrain.
Porsche 918 Spyder was one such car which has been a showpiece model in the history of sports cars. First unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show this car was depicted as the direct successor of the Porsche Carrera GT. Built in two different body types, roadster and coupe - the car was manufactured in a limited number of 918 units in the time period of 2013-2015. In March 2015, the last Porsche 918 Spyder rolled out of the assembly line. Although, this car is not anymore in production, but the legacy surrounding the beauty and superb performance is still on.
How was this car in flesh? How did it perform? Let’s take a look.

Porsche has recalled 205 units of their popular 918 models Worldwide, the hybrid Supercar has been recalled to replace a chassis components which were used for a certain period of time and were delivered from a defective batch and these parts does not guarantees any longevity. However there has been no report of any mishap from any customers until now .
The problem was identified recently during an in house survey and quality inspection. The owners of the recalled 918 Spyders will be contacted directly by the Porsche representatives and then they can visit their nearest workshop where the parts will be replaced entirely free of cost and this recall and replacement will take place from the beginning of the year 2015. Now the Porsche 918 is a supercar and it has been meant for extreme speeds and a defect in the chassis is a major problem because it not only is related to the safety of the passengers but also may effects the cars handling too.
For those who don’t have an idea of what exactly is this 918 Spyder all about for them the Porsche 918 is powered by a hybrid powertrain which produces about 887 hp of peak power and 1275 Nm of torque, and all these power is actually transferred to all the 4 wheels of the 918 Spyder which also helps in its handling. The 918 Spyder can accelerate from 0-100 km/h mark in just 2.8 seconds and has a top speed of about 335 km/h mark.
Mclaren P1 and a Porsche 918………
What are the next words that are coming in your mind? Is It Race? If it’s ‘race’ then today is your lucky day because believe it or not you get to see a P1 locking horns with the 918 Spyder. Now as you all know both of these hypercars are actually powered by a hybrid engine which means that you have a powerful petrol engine as well as an electric motor which actually results in an amazing power output. Both these cars are meant for race track and are extremely fast at the same time and in this video you can actually find out how fast they actually are on a real race track.
On paper the Mclaren P1 produces about 903 hp of peak power and about 1500 Nm of torque which is absolutely brilliant while on the other hand the Porsche 918 generates about 887 hp of peak power and 1275 Nm of torque which is comparatively less than the P1. Offcourse! The Porsche 918 is a heavier car than the Mclaren p1 and thus is also slower……No! Actually not because the Mclaren P1 and Porsche 918 both can accelerate from 0-100 km/h mark on just 2.8 seconds while they both actually can reach speeds of above 335 km/h mark.
Folks at Evo try to set a fastest lap time on both these cars and try to find out who comes out as the clear winner.
How often do you actually see a Hypercar on road? In this video there is not one but actually two of the world’s finest and really fast Hypercar’s which are ready to race against each other in an open airstrip.
Autocar recently conducted a drag race between the Mclaren P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder which are both actually has a hybrid powertrain. These mid engine Hypercars are fast and the engine produces an enormous amount of power. However there is a twist here there is one more contender who too actually is participating in this unique drag race and that’s the new Ducati 1199 Superleggera. Now you must be thinking that the motorcycle surely weighs almost less than half of this two cars and a car although be it an extreme Hypercar like the Mclaren P1 or the Porsche 918 cannot actually compete with a motorcycle because it’s lightweight and fast. But you will actually have to wait till the end of this video to find out what actually happens next.
The Mclaren P1 actually produces 904 bhjp while the Porsche 918 produces about 875 bhp while the super exclusive Ducati Superleggera produces about 200 bhp of peak power which is really less compared to the other two beasts here.
Enjoy the Drag race and find out who actually wins this ultimate battle.
Unfortunately this week due to some unwanted circumstances we have published our video on Sunday instead of Saturday but we have got something really interesting for you today here on topspeed.in.
In this video you can watch that the person at I drive drives this all new Porsche 918 Spyder, which also happens to be one of the most powerful and fastest sportscars of this planet in all electric mode from the Northern tip of New York City all the way towards the Southern tip of the New York City. Now this is quite strange because we have mostly seen this car driven insanely at an race track or on an open road without any boundaries or rules but here in this video actually two things are proved quite clearly that Porsche 918 can go upto 12 Miles on the all electric mode which not only saves fuel but also make this an environment friendly car while the second point that is proved here is whether a high performance sportscar can be practical enough to take you from point A to Point B safely.
Watch and enjoy the video and do leave your thoughts and ideas on the comment box below.
Like the Mclaren P1 this supercar also has a petrol and electric motor which works jointly. It has a top mounted exhaust which throws flames, when you push the 4.8 litre petrol V8 hard. It can reach 0-100 km mark in just 2.6 seconds. Yes!! This is one beast that most of you would love to get your hands on.
Check out Jay Leno getting his hands on the new Porsche 918 Spyder.
