Tata is on the roll this year because they already have launched the first product of this year for the Indian market already. The Xenon Yoddha range of pickup trucks is an important product for Tata Motors both in the National as well as International markets. The Xenon range of trucks was introduced by Tata Motors at the 2006 Bologna Motor show and was launched back in 2007. There is no doubt that the Xenon gets a stylish exterior, comfortable interior.
The new Xenon Yoddha pickup truck was launched today in the presence of the manufacturers newly appointed brand Ambassador Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar. This truck also promises to be a new benchmark in the pickup segment. The new Xenon truck will be suitable for various type of commercial purposes like carrying goods and transporting various products.
The smart pick-up is available in multiple variants – 4x2 & 4x4 and in single & double cab options.

2018 Mercedes-Benz Concept X-CLASS
We all were eagerly waiting for the first premium pickup truck from Mercedes-Benz and although our Indian market is definitely not a popular market for the Pickup trucks but this could change it all. According to Mercedes this pickup truck will combine the best of both worlds. Mercedes says that this truck design resembles tough, functional, strong, and its off-road capability. These trucks obviously carry the 3 star logo and focuses on brand design, comfort and also the driving dynamics and safety at the same time.
With this product Mercedes Benz also wants to extend its vans product range and this will be the fourth model. Mercedes-Benz has plans to launch these truck in the world market towards late 2017 and it will launch under the Mercedes-Benz X-Class nameplate. Mercedes-Benz are hopeful that their new product will change the segment of Mid-Size pickups.
This mid-size truck will be based on the ladder type frame chassis and will also use a powerful six cylinder engine and also a permanent all wheel drive system as well which Mercedes thinks is compulsory for a truck. Few years ago the pickup trucks were only used for workload purpose but now they are actually also becoming a versatile vehicle for daily use. The speciality of these pick up trucks is that they can carry upto 5 occupants inside while they can also be used for some commercial purpose as well at the same time.

You think girls can’t drive? Really? After watching this video you will think twice. In Malaysia girl drifter Leona Chin is a well known name. The beautiful professional motorsport athlete took the opportunity to give a lesson to those guys, who think girls can’t drive. We are not talking about everyday commuting, but all the speedy and risky maneuvers.
So, what did she do? Leona disguised herself as a sales girl in one of the Mitsubishi showroom and offered test drives to the interested customers in a fifth generation Mitsubishi Triton L200 pickup truck. As Leona took the wheel from the viable customers, the guys seemed to become awestruck with her driving skills. Well, in the beginning of the video we saw one of the guys saying Leona, “You know how to handle this car? This is a man’s car you know.” At the end of the video Leona replied to him, “Who said girls cannot drive?” Pretty well fitting answer in a fast and furious manner I must say.
India’s small commercial vehicle segment although does not have many competitors but still the competition is intense. Mahindra who is definitely one of the major players of this game launched their product Genio couple of years ago and it left quite a buzz in this segment because of its low maintenance diesel engine and load carrying capability.
Recently Mahindra decided to launch a new pickup truck to replace their existing Genio. The new commercial vehicle which will replace the Genio is called the Imperio, Mahindra is calling it premium, aspirational pick up. This truck has been developed to help those who are in the small medium businesses transportation. Compared to the other trucks of its segment the Imperio brings stylish futuristic design and premium interiors for the comfort of its occupants inside and above all superior performance.
The model is offered in the Indian market with both single-cab and double-cab versions. The Imperio is also offered with two variants which include the base and the top of the line VX variant. The base variant is made available with BSIII engine while the slightly pricier variant gets the BSIV engine. The Imperio is positioned above the Mahindra Bolerio Pik Up and will compete with the Tata Xenon and Isuzu D-Max Pik Up.
This newly launched Imperio uses the same powertrain from the Genio which means this pickup truck is offered with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder mDI CRDe diesel engine paired to a 5 speed manual transmission. To know more about the Mahindra Imperio go through our review.

Renault is the leader in the European LCV market but are now looking to go global. They will launch their commercial vehicles at different markets around the world. The main focus is being given to the pickup truck segment as it contributes to 40 percent of LCV sales. Renault will launch their pick-ups in markets like Thailand and Australia.
The French manufacturer is closely observing the Indian commercial market to judge and enter it at the right time. They feel that the current composition is not attractive for them to enter now. Instead, they will wait for the market to mature. Japanese auto maker, Isuzu see the pickup truck market increasing to about 10 - 15 million units annually in less than 10 years and they have launched the D-Max 1 tonne pickup truck here. Another vehicle is expected to be launched next year.
Renault will soon have two pickups at their disposal. They recently launched a 1 tonne pickup called the Alaskan. It will go on sale next year. The other vehicle is the Duster Oroch, which is a 0.5 tonne twin cab pickup truck based on the popular compact SUV, the Duster. When Renault decides to enter the Indian commercial vehicles segment, the Oroch will be a popular choice to be the first vehicle released.
Isuzu Motors is a Japanese automobile manufacturer who specialize in commercial vehicles and diesel engines. The company was founded in 1916 by the Tokyo Gas Company. The name Isuzu comes from the Isuzu river. Currently, Isuzu is a public company and it has its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.
Japan’s oldest automobile manufacturer entered the Indian market in March 2013 with the MU-7 SUV. They first started with a dealership in Hyderabad and Coimbatore. Isuzu launched the D-Max pick-up truck in the country in May of 2014.
Globally, the pick-up truck was launched in 2002 in Thailand. The car is in its second generation now and it shares its platform with various mid-size trucks from General Motors. The Isuzu D-Max is rebadged and sold as a Chevrolet and a GMC. In Australia, it is sold as a Holden. The second generation D-Max was launched in 2011 and is sold only in a few Asian countries. The other countries still receive the first generation vehicle.
Unfortunately, in India, the Isuzu D-Max pick-up truck sold is the first generation vehicle. It is sold in four variants; Single Cab, Single Cab Chassis, Space Cab Flat Deck and Space Cab Arched Deck.
To tap the surging demand for LCVs in the market, that are fueled by the growth of sales of LCVs like the Tata Ace and the Ashok-Leyland Dost, Maruti will announce the next gen Maruti-Suzuki Carry, which (in other markets) look like a Verse that was cut in half and fitted with a floorbed.
One interesting aspect of the Carry is that the engine is an 800cc diesel-powered twin cylinder engine that’s developed by Maruti themselves. This engine was developed after they figured out that the Fiat sourced 1.5-liter DDiS engine couldn’t fit into the Carry’s tiny engine compartment.
The Carry will be the first Maruti to be powered by the new diesel engine. It is also speculated that the new unit will also power the next-gen Maruti-Suzuki A-Star, thereby offering a diesel option for buyers. This should allow entry level customers to enjoy the benefits of a diesel motor without shelling out too much.
Tata Motors today launched the new generation feature packed pickup, the Xenon XT, in South Africa. The new vehicle includes improvements in the field of performance, safety, comfort, style and functionality. Basically, everywhere..
The new Tata Xenon XT’s features will give it a competitive edge amongst other lifestyle bakkie options available in the South African market. The new range of trucks will come in two variants that have two sub-variants each, a single cab (4x2 and 4x4) and double cab (4x2 and 4x4). Tata Motors have worked hard to make these trucks safe and have added safety features for both active and passive safety of the occupants inside. The new Xenon XT also comes with a low NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness), Electric windows, power steering, navigation, Bluetooth, radio, MP3, side steps, bucket seats with armrests, tiltable steering column etc.
Under the hood, its Common Rail Diesel Engine generates sufficient amount of power and torque capable of performing heavy tasks with ease. This particular vehicle can be used for family and leisure activities, farming, mining, constructional work, small businesses and municipalities. It can overcome any terrain with ease and will also be ideal for off-road 4x4 enthusiasts.
The new Xenon XT is powered by a 2.2L VTT DiCOR (Variable Turbine Technology, Direct Injection Common Rail) engine that is controlled by a 32-bit electronic control unit and incorporates state-of-the-art technology. This Euro V engine powers all the Xenon trucks and also meets the Euro II requirements. The engine generates 110 kW @ 4000 rpm and peak torque of 320 Nm between 1500 - 3000 rpm.
Mr. RT Wasan, Head - International Business, Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors said that they were very excited to launch the all-new Tata Xenon XT in the South African market. This vehicle will further strengthen their position in the South African automotive industry and motivate them to develop more such exciting vehicles for the customers there.
The new Xenon XT will occupy another place in the already existing company’s portfolio, which comprises of the Super ACE (1T mini truck), 207 DI turbo (3.0L worker), and the existing Xenon range with its eleven variants.

Tata and Mahindra over the last year have been locking horns in the motorsports arena as both these home grown manufacturers are determined to outdo each other.Mahindra if we are fair has taken the lead with the entry of the XUV500 in cross country rally-raids, not to forget the XUV’s success in the market. The newScorpio will be out in 2014 and we will soon get Ssangyong SUV’s too. Tata on the other hand is still to launch the Safari Storm but while we wait for that, Tata is shifting the fight to Mahindra to another segment and has launched a cheaper version to the Xenon pick-up which is aimed at challenging Mahindra’s dominance in this segment. The Bolero pick-up and theGenio (Xylo based) have sold in huge numbers and the commercial version of the Xenon is aimed at commercial users. The Xenon is now priced at Rs 5.44 lakh for the single-cab variant and Rs. 6.34 lakh for the dual-cab variant ex-showroom, Mumbai.
Sales of lifestyle Pickups are booming around the world but in India we are still waiting for manufacturers to launch them. It’s a farfetched thought when people consider these pickups to survive Armageddon along with cockroaches, but there’s a good chance you’ll see the Ford Ranger cruising around farm holdings in the next century too. The Ranger which forms the bases for the Endeavour SUV which is sold in India, is a compact pickup truck which has soldiered on with relatively few revisions for nearly three decades. Ford had displayed the Ranger at the Auto Expo even before it launched the Endeavour to gauge public reaction but the manufacturer hasn’t shown much interest in this segment since. Though Indian manufacturers have tried to explore the lifestyle pickup segment with the likes of the Tata Xenon and the Mahindra Getaway, both of which cost under 10lakhs, there is room in our market for something more niche and upmarket. If launched, the Ranger could be priced between 17 to 19 lakhs.
The Toyota Hilux began its journey as a true workhorse. It was plain and simple but over the years this workhorse has transformed itself into a lifestyle vehicle. The sixth generation Hilux aims at carrying forward the tag of being both a legendary pick-up and being a bona-fide off-roader. In India currently we only have the Mahindra Bolero Pickup, the Scorpio based Getaway and the Tata Xenon pick up which are sold in the market in this segment. While the Bolero pickup is quite agricultural, the Xenon and the Getaway are pitched as lifestyle pickups but with them priced at nearly 10lakhs, response has been poor. There though definitely exists room for a more serious lifestyle pickup to be introduced in the market. Toyota in our market is perceived both as an upmarket and reliable brand and these are some reasons for the Fortuner SUV being the runaway success that it has become. The Fortuner is based on the Hilux pickup and the success of the SUV could rub off on the pickup if the manufacturer can price it around 15lakhs.
Mahindra & Mahindra have won the arbitration filled against them by their former US distributors Global Vehicles. Mahindra had earlier announced that it would import pickup trucks from India in Completely knockdown kit (CKD) to the US and assemble the Scorpio based pickup truck there. The manufacturer then had to delay its plans citing legal issues and now after the judgement the way is clear for Mahindra to make fresh entry into the US market.
Mahindra’s long awaited entry into the United States market isn’t going to happen anytime soon. The Manufacturer had plans to sell the single cab version of the Scorpio pickup in the United States but reports suggest that Mahindra has terminated its relationship with Navistar, its US distributor. There is now speculation that Mahindra would go alone in the US market but the manufacturer denies that. Mahindra currently has subsidiaries in China, South Africa and in Italy and also ships CKD’s to Brazil and Egypt.
Pickups strangely haven’t found favour in our country. Maybe we aren’t a country which needs pickups. Think about it, how many Indians do you know of who enjoy the outdoors, camping, mountain biking, fishing etc. It’s just not an Indian thing to put your mountain bike on the back of a pickup, throw in a tent and a stove and head towards the wilderness. While more and more Indians have started to travel abroad and within India, an overwhelming majority prefer a hill station or luxury resort to escape the mayhem of urban India. Pickups then just don’t fit into our lifestyle. Except for the Tata 407 which sold in good numbers because of its versatility, urban India still hasn’t taken to the idea of pickups as a form of commuting. But that didn’t stop Tata Motors from introducing the Xenon in 2009. The Xenon is not aimed at the rural market but rather at the adventurous urban commuter who is looking to make a statement and enjoys his time away from the concrete jungle. With prices starting from Rs7, 91,839 to Rs8, 84,372 for the RWD and 4WD variants ex-showroom New Delhi, is the Xenon good enough to be a substitute for a car and demand such a premium price tag?

The Xenon is being positioned as a niche vehicle and Tata is targeting an aware and ‘ready for adventure’ clientele for whom the Xenon could probably be their second vehicle. Priced at Rs7.62lakhs for the 4×2 version and Rs8.58lakhs for the 4×4 version, ex showroom New-Delhi, the Xenon sure doesn’t come cheap but is it as versatile as Tata claims it to be?
If for no other reason one can buy a pickup just to make a statement. Owning a pickup tells everyone that you love the outdoors even though you might not know how to pitch a tent. A pickup like the Getaway also allows you to bully the hatchbacks on the road but that would make you popular in your neighbourhood. But who cares, a pickup is sure to make you popular with the girls. It’s a vehicle with presence and there are so few of them on our roads that you’re sure to turn heads. The Mahindra Getaway keeps the DNA of the Scorpio and is available in both, two wheel drive and four wheel drive versions. With a starting price of Rs8,14,628 (ex-showroom New-Delhi), is this pickup really fit for adventure and worth the money?
The XUV 500 is testimony to Mahindra’s coming of age as an automobile manufacturer. Predominantly a Jeep builder, Mahindra has grown both in stature and ability since it started its operations in independent India. Today when the Indian success story is getting recognised around the world, Mahindra too is going from strength to strength. While the XUV 500 with its monocoque construction showcases what Mahindra is capable of, the Getaway with its body on ladder chassis reminds you of Mahindra’s strong Jeep roots. The Getaway is a pickup based on the Scorpio and even though the pickup market and its sales in India really haven’t given manufacturers a reason to celebrate, there is enough room in the market for it to exist. With prices starting from Rs8,25,400 to Rs9,26,200 ex-showroom New Delhi, where does the Getaway standard compared to a SUV and a MPV?
