The Tata Nano surely is one car which deserves the top spot in our prestigious list. Tata Motors actually decided to build a really affordable car so that almost every Indian family can own one. Well! We have to agree that this was surely a noble effort from Tata Motors and what was the even more surprising was the fact that the Nano when launched in the Indian market was actually priced 1, 00, 000 rupees earning it the title of "world’s cheapest car". However the price increased initially but even today it still is the cheapest car of India.

When the production began in 2008 Tata Motors motive was actually aiming to lure those middle class customers who actually ride motorcycles. The attractive pricing, feature packed interiors were some of the main highlights of the car. The Nano as we all know is also powered by a really small 624 cc, 2 cylinder, all aluminium petrol engine which churns out about 38 Ps of peak power and 51 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to 4 speed manual transmission initially.

A lot has changed over the years and now the Nano is actually considered as a worthy competitor to the other entry level cars of the Indian market. The new generation model now gets an automated manual transmission (AMT), a useable boot door and much more refined engine and offcourse the extra width has actually increased the space inside maing it more comfortable for the rear passengers.

Just like the Tata Nano the Maruti [800-article130194] too shares a very special place in our heart. This is actually also considered as one of the most influential cars of the Indian automotive history. The popularity of this car actually lasted even till the day the Maruti decided to end its production, this was actually also the bestselling car of India till the year 2004.

Overall the years of its production the car has actually received few cosmetic updates but overall the hatchback remained same under the skin. It was powered by 796 cc, 3 cylinder petrol motor which churned out about 37 Hp of peak power. The engine was actually paired to a 4 speed gearbox while the special edition model later received a 5 speed gearbox as well. The car later was also launched with a LPG variant as well.

Production: 1958-2014

This was perhaps the one car which lifted India’s head high in a true sense. Hindustan Motors [Ambassador-article155854] is considered as a legend in the Indian automotive history. All of you actually should be well aware of the fact that the Ambassador was based on the Morris Oxford series III model which was originally built in United Kingdom. This also happens to be the very first production car which was built in India and was used by many renowned Indian personalities including Ministers, celebrities, actors, Athletes. This car is so popular that still now it is actually used as taxis in some parts of the Country. This car also earned the title of World’s best taxi by TopGear the renowned British Auto show.

Until 2014 the car was produced at Uttarpara Plant in Kolkata. Since its launch the sedan has received plenty of changes and even many models and versions as well. The car used 1.5 Litre petrol engine back in the 1990’s which was later replaced by 1.8 Litre engine. The engines which were available till the last were the entry level 1500 diesel followed by the 1800 ISZ, 2000 DSZ and the most powerful of the lot the 2000 DSZ Turbo.

It was actually sad to watch this legend perish because of the financial problems the company faced and also because of the low demand of the cars. But don’t get upset you can always enjoy a ride in a Ambassador taxi and relive the glorious years of the past.

Although the Avanti actually sources its power from a 2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged, petrol motor sourced from Renault and it may not be as powerful as any other German Sporstcars still the engine manages to churn out about 250 Bhp of peak power and 340 Nm of torque.
