2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMGby Riju Ganguly , on July 31, 2014, 08:22
An open top or a convertible may not be a very good idea for the Indian market but that does not really stop our auto enthusiasts from getting their hands on one, they are perhaps the next best thing that money can buy to enjoy the open roads and feel the winds flowing through your hair. There are couples of convertible already available in our Indian market and Mercedes Benz added their latest roadster to their Indian lineup recently which definitely is an attention grabber. Yes! I am talking about the all new Mercedes Benz SLK 55 AMG which is a more powerful version of the SLK class already available in our Indian market. Now a roadster with a V8 heart hmm! That is something to really look out for.
The standard SLK class was launched by Mercedes way back in the year 1996 in the International market, so this is definitely not a new car which was added to the German premium brand lineup infact this was probably one of the sportiest, lightest and shortest roadster available in the market. Now many will ask why we prefer an AMG tuned car. The reason is simple Mercedes Benz stuffs the standard cars with a massive engine under the hood and some visual elements to make it appear more beefy and muscular although these cars may not be the most practical ones in the real life situation but who cares if you have the money and want to get your hands on a powerful shiny exotic for yourself.
The Mercedes Benz SLK55 AMG as I already did mentioned above comes packed with a powerful top-of-line V8 engine which packs some serious punch, this roadster is capable of hitting the 100km/h mark in just 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 250km/h mark.

EXTERIOR"the SLK 55 AMG features panoramic vario-roof with Magic Sky Control"
The very first thing that will perhaps catch your attention is the size of the car, this car measures only 4146 mm in length and many will ask how AMG has stuffed that massive V8 under the hood of this SLK class. Well! We leave the tough part on the shoulder of the Mercedes Benz engineers and try to enjoy the output of their hard work shall we?
The SLK55 AMG is based on the SLK class so this may not look too different to you than the standard car but AMG engineers has added couple of their magic touches to this car to make it appear different than the standard SLK Class. The front of the car you get this shiny 3 pointed star in the middle of the upright radiator grille with lots of chrome accent on it while the lower lip of the roadster has the bigger air vents. The wide headlamp unit comes fitted with standard Bi-xenon bulbs which enhances the visibility during night time driving. The long bonnet and the short rear overhang make it appear like a typical Grand Tourer. The SLK55 AMG comes fitted with standard AMG 18 inch 10 spoke alloy wheels painted in matte black which helps in enhancing the sporty quotient of this convertible. Walk towards the rear and you will find this integrated spoiler, the eye catching quad exhaust pipes and the stylish LED tail lamps and lastly the AMG lettering at the rear of the car which helps it to differentiate from the standard SLK Class.
The most important feature of any convertible got to be its folding roof which transforms the car from a roadster to a coupe in just matter of time; the SLK 55 AMG features panoramic vario-roof with Magic Sky Control, what it actually does is with a press a button the glass roof transforms itself into light or dark shades as required, the dark shade prevents sun rays from heating up the interior.
The overall dimension of the SLK55 AMG has been provided below:
Length 4146 mm Width 1817 mm Height 1300 mm Wheel base 2430 mm Boot volume 335 litres
INTERIOR"the SLK55 AMG only has 335 litres of boot space at the rear"
The one and only complain with all the roadsters got to be the lack of storage spaces inside the cabin and this car is not so different either, although there are couple of cubby holes inside the SLK55 AMG interiors but quite honestly they aren’t that much useful and practical. Another problem with any convertible car is the foldable roof which eats up a lot of space when it folds inside the boot and the SLK55 AMG only has 335 litres of boot space at the rear. So if you are planning for a weekend getaway in this car we suggest you to take fewer luggage’s.
That said the rest of the SLK55 AMG interiors looks impressive and it has everything that you would expect out of a Mercedes Benz interiors. The 4-way lumbar support seats also comes with memory package and above all are comfortable and can easily fit a taller person which is impressive. The AMG cabin also comes fitted with some of the most impressive gadgets which include the command inline six DVD changer and Harmon Kardon surround sound music system. The cockpit further has been equipped with ambient lighting; you also get the AMG performance steering wheel which also has been fitted with gear shifter pedals in case you want to enjoy the manual shifting above all you get the AMG carbon fibre trim and design and also leather upholstery which is also the signature styling quotient of any AMG cars.
The comfortable seats and the spacious cockpit makes long drives fatigue free in the SLK55 AMG.
The SLK55 AMG has a massive engine under its hood; it uses a V8 displacing 5461 cc which produces 421 hp of peak power at 6800rpm and 540 Nm of peak torque at 4500 rpm, this engine has been mated to a the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission which offers 3 driving modes Controlled Efficiency, Sports and Manual. The roadster is capable of hitting the 100 km/h mark from standstill in just 4.6 seconds while the top speed is limited to 250 km/h mark.
Now many must be wondering that the V8 is a huge engine and you cannot actually trust on its fuel efficiency figures but Mercedes Benz always has solution to every problem this V8 engine comes packed with eco start/stop function which automatically turns off the engine when the car comes to a stop plus it has cylinder management system which turns off cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 when the car is driven efficiently.
The drivetrain details of the SLK55 AMG has been provided below:
Fuel Petrol Installation Rear-wheel drive Type 5461cc, V8 Power 416bhp at 6800rpm Torque 540 NM at 4500 rpm
The SLK 55 AMG is priced at Rs 1.26 crores (ex-showroom New Delhi)
Let us be practical here you will need to pay a hefty sum of 1.26 crores to get your hands on the pumped up version of the CLK Class where youy also have plenty of other options to choose from.
The Audi R8 is one such convertible which quite frankly does not need any attention. This car is neither too loud for a sportscar but it has all the thing that one searches in a sportscar. Powered by a V-8 4.2-liter naturally aspirated engine this engine produces 424 horsepower and 583 Nm of torque and if you are not satisfied with the overall output of this car then there is the bigger V10 Plus which produces an impressive 517 horsepower and 718 Nm of torque. The Audi R8 is priced at around INR 1,63,82,000. while the V10 models starts at INR 1,87,52,000 (ex-showroom New Delhi).
If you want an exotic car which screams out loud as soon as you step on the gas and does not want to be tamed then perhaps the SLK55 AMG is the appropriate car for you. It has everything that you want in a convertible including a powerful engine, luxurious and sporty interiors covered with leather and premium quality materials and lastly the good looks to match with but if you want a more practical car then you always have plenty of other options available to you.
