Mercedes ML-Class

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class is a 4-door SUV with light off-road capability, first offered in 1997, and built in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, USA. It marked a shift at Mercedes-Benz in becoming a global player; while it had plants outside Germany before, they merely built facsimiles of German models. In contrast, the M-Class was conceived with the American market in mind and built at an American factory. Despite early negative press about quality control, the M-Class became a huge sales success in the United States.

2012 - 2013 Mercedes-Benz ML-Class

When you say “Mercedes Benz” the first thing that comes to the mind are the luxury premium sedans or those sporty overpowered AMG tuned cars but the German premium automaker also knows a thing or two about SUV’s and have a pretty impressive collection of hardcore SUV’s under their product portfolio. Take for example the mighty old Dinosaur G-Class or the sportier and capable GL -Class but our hot favorite got to be the ML-Class. Yes! This may not be as big or bulky like the other two but surely has all the hardware and ability to take you out of any situation.

The Mid-size premium SUV was first offered to the world in the year 1997 as a 1998 model and it quickly gained popularity because of its shape, size and fuel efficient engines. Mercedes launched the updated ML-Class in India and guess what it is even assembled in Mercedes Benz, Pune plant in India. This is the third generation ML Class that is being sold currently in both International and Indian market as well while the International markets can choose from both petrol and diesel engine options but here in India it is available with only two diesel engine options which include the 350 CDI and the smaller and more fuel efficient 250 CDI. So what else will you get with the ML Class?

Well! You get a vehicle which is capable on urban roads and transforms itself to be equally capable offroader when you feel like having some real fun. Although Mercedes has already started testing the new generation ML Class and hopefully it too will be launched in our Indian market in the coming years but till then you have to remain satisfied with the current generation SUV that is being sold here in India. Here is all the information of the 3rd generation ML Class which is available now in our Country.

EXTERIOR

The front face of the SUV now has a bigger radiator grille with this three star logo in the middle which actually has made the front face even more aggressive as well as muscular talking about its muscular appearance we specially loved the power bulges and contoured lines on the front bonnet. The stylish new headlamps which also have a strip of daytime running lamps positioned on the lower half of the front bumper. The front bumper also gets new chrome elements which actually looks interesting and quite frankly the addition of all these elements has made the new SUV’s front face more muscular and sporty.

Walk towards its side profile and you will love when you will find that this SUV does not look huge and bulky like its bigger cousins but this is still not a small SUV either because it is actually 23mm longer, 15mm wider and 20mm lower than its predecessor but what defines it from the rest is its large wheelbase and short overhangs. Now when I said that the new 3rd generation ML-Class still retains some of the styling elements of its predecessor I was talking particularly about how Merc designed the C Pillar of this SUV and the way the roofline slopes down towards its rear. However when you take a look at the SUV from the rear profile you won’t be able to see any pillars. While talking about the rear profile of the ML-Class let us remind you that the tail lamps are now LED units which actually raise the visibility of the SUV even more during night. You can’t ignore the sporty roof spoiler which blends perfectly with the sloping roof either; lastly the rear bumper too is further highlighted with the use of those chrome elements.

Overall the ML Class got to the sportiest looking SUV amongst the trio which includes the GL and the G class and we love every change that Merc has made to the new SUV.

INTERIOR

You will absolutely love what Mercedes has done with the new M Class it retains some of the old elements of the earlier generation M Class while also adding some interesting new styling details.

Nobody really raised any serious question about the luxury quotient of any of the Mercedes products ever the ML-Class cabin too is the outcome of some serious research and experiments. We always complain about one thing in a car and that is their interior space but with the ML-Class you will never actually get any chance of complain ever because it provides an impressive amount of space both for its front and rear passengers, the ML Class actually offers more elbow room than its predecessor (an extra 34 millimeters in the front and an extra 25 millimeters in the rear).

Beside just space the interior looks plush specially the trim elements on the dash matching with the trims on doors. The seats too have been cleverly designed to save space and support the occupants quite comfortably even during long distance rides furthermore the seats can be adjusted electronically. Some of the new features that are available with the SUV are its rear seat backrests which can be adjustable for angle. While fold the backseats and the seat cushion forward and you will get a descent 2010 litres of boot space at the rear which is really impressive. The ML Class also gets 20 CD Audi system as standard which also consists of a radio with twin-tuner, a colour display with a 14.7 cm screen diagonal, an MP3/WMA/AAC-compatible CD player, a USB interface, an AUX-IN socket in the centre armrest and a telephone keypad. This new system also supports hands-free telephony and Audio Streaming for the transfer of music. Now it not only does end there it also comes with a COMAND Online multimedia system with a high-resolution 17.8 cm color display and free access to the internet. You will also get an integrated navigation module.

Definitely the ML Class cabin feels plush and unlike the Audi Q7, the M-class is a five seater but leg and head room for front and rear passengers is good.

DRIVETRAIN

Although there are some interesting engine options available with the ML Class in the International markets but it only comes with two diesel engine options which include the smaller 250 CDI and the 350 CDI.

The ML 250 CDI actually gets a 2.2-litre, twin-turbocharged engine under the bonnet which generates about 201 Ps of peak power at 5250 rpm and an impressive 500 Nm of peak torque in between 1600 – 1800 rpm. Now this SUV is fast it can reach the 100 km/h mark from standstill in just 9 seconds while it has a top speed of 210 Km/h mark. While the 350 CDI displaces a bigger 3.0 liter V6 which produces about 258 Ps of peak power at 3800 rpm and 620 Nm of peak torque in between 1600-2400 rpm, this diesel engine too can accelerate from standstill to 100km/h mark in just 7.4 seconds which is quite impressive keeping in mind the weight that it is carrying along with it, this SUV also has a top speed of 224 km/h mark. Both the engines are mated to a 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission which makes share that you get the smoothest shifts and greater fuel efficiency. This new Blue TEC diesel engines consumes one quarter less fuel than its predecessor.

The new engines comes equipped with Eco Start/Stop system as standard beside the new 7 speed automatic transmission with a new fuel economy converter, friction-optimized bearings and a transmission oil thermal management system all helps in fuel consumption. This huge SUV also has a minimum drag coefficient of 0.32 which is also the best figures in this segment.

RIDE AND HANDLING

The new M-Class comes with a steel suspension that also features selective damping. The driver also gets electric steering. The bigger ML 350 CDI is equipped with 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, 4ETS electronic traction control and an off-road button which activates a special off‑road driving mode. It also gets the start-off assist system which makes hill starts easier while there is also a Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) which makes descending from a hill safe and easy.

The new suspension system which comes with selective damping system enhances dynamic and sporty handling. The new ML Class gets a double wishbone front suspension while the rear gets a sophisticated four-link rear axle. The ML 250 CDI gets a lowered suspension setup. There is also an off-road driver programme which gets automatic transmission, anti-lock braking system (ABS), Electronic Stability Program ESP® and the 4ETS electronic traction system which gets automatically activated with the press of a off-road button postioned in the center console.

Dynamically the M-class is drastically improved thanks to the reworked version of the chassis of the previous generation M. The handling has improved and there is better feedback from the steering. The SUV gets permanent 4WD which provides good cornering grip. The suspension setting can be changed to choose between ride and handling but even in Sport mode the M isn’t as dynamic as the BMW X5.

COMPETITION

BMW X5

The M Class biggest competitor got to be the new BMW X5 which actually was launched recently in the Indian market and is only available with the XDrive 30 D spec. The XDrive 30 D uses a Six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology (turbocharger with variable inlet geometry, common rail direct injection) and has an overall displacement of 2,993 cc. This engine generates a maximum power output of 258 hp at 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 560 Nm at 1,500 – 3,000 rpm. The variant has a top speed of 230 km/h and can reach 0-100 km/h mark in just 6.9 seconds. This is popular amongst the crowd for its impressive handling characteristics and its luxurious interiors.

PRICE

The Mercedes Benz ML Class prices are provided below:

- The ML 250 CDI has been priced at Rs. 54.80 lakhs (Ex showroom)
- The ML 350 CDI has been priced at Rs. 65.81 lakhs (Ex showroom)

SAFETY FEATURES

The Mercedes Benz ML Class comes with some important safety features which actually puts this SUV way ahead in its league. It gets:

- ATTENTION ASSIST
- Brake Assist (BAS)
- COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST
- Adaptive brake lights
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
- Intelligent Light System
- Seven airbags

CONCLUSION

The M-class is improved in all departments and when launched is sure to take on the competition loaded with ammunition. The styling is improved and the SUV now looks more dynamic. The interiors are spacious and extremely well put together with a sense of luxuriousness. The feature list is strong but the M can accommodate only 5 passengers. The engine has sufficient punch and the ride and handling is improved as well. The optional off road package gives the M good mud crawling credentials and if Mercedes can price the SUV right, sales are bound to be strong.

All our readers must agree with me here that Mercedes-Benz has planned an aggressive marketing strategy in India for the year 2014. First they launched the powerful GL 63 AMG just few weeks ago in India. Then today they have launched another powerful and exciting SUV, the ML 63 AMG in our Indian market, not only this they even launched AMG performance center at Delhi where their valuable customers will get to experience Mercedes-AMG product more closely. That said, lets us turn our focus back to the recently launched vehicle the ML 63 AMG.

The ML Class which is one of the most powerful and stylish SUV from Mercedes-Benz stable has been tuned by AMG to deliver massive amount of power and performance while keeping the passengers cocooned with the utmost luxury inside the SUV. Till now most of us used to believe that SUVs are some gigantic beasts which can only be used to deliver goods and luggage’s to those places where your normal car is not capable of reaching but Mercedes Benz along with AMG forced you to think differently.

So the ML 63 AMG provides an impressive ground clearance which is suitable for our Indian roads, rugged looking yet stylish exterior and sophisticated and comfortable interior finished with top notch quality materials. Oh! I forgot to add one more thing which might attract all your attention, the ML63 AMG is powered by a 5.5 Liter V8 Turbo engine which generates an insane amount of power and torque and wait till you hear this the ML 63 AMG is capable of hitting 100 km/h mark from standstill in just 4.7 seconds which will leave even most of its other sports car rivals to shame. This seems to be an extremely intelligent move by Mercedes. The German luxury manufacturer has launched its ML SUV with a smaller 250 CDI engine and has reduced the prices compared to the 350 CDI by nearly 10.5lakhs. The ML 250 CDI is priced at Rs 45.64lakh ex-showroom Mumbai and this is first M-Class to be assembled in India. The competitive pricing puts it in direct competition with the Audi Q5 andBMW X3, both of which are a segment lower. Mercedes had earlier launched the ML 350 CDI in May of 2012 and speaking at the launch of the new ML 250 CDI, Mercedes-Benz India’s Managing Director & CEO, Peter Honegg said, “The M-Class 250 CDI priced at Rs. 45.64 lakhs is the first M-Class ever to be offered from a local production outside Mercedes-Benz’s SUV plant in Tuscaloosa, USA. India becomes the ‘first’ market in the world to enjoy this elite status and further highlights Daimler AG’s focus and commitment on the Indian market.”

Mercedes M-class to be launched in May

Mercedes-Benz will launch the stylish 2012 M-class in May. Price for the SUV is expected to be around 70lakhs and initially the SUV will be brought into India as a CBU. The M-class is only a five seater and the prices are expected to come down later on as Mercedes plans to assemble the SUV at its plant in Pune.

To begin with the SUV will come only with a 3-litre, V6 diesel which produces 258PS and 620Nm of torque. The engine uses to a seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox and in the time to come the engine will be heavily localised and assembled by Force Motors. The 2012 new M-class is 23mm longer and 15mm wider than the old car. The styling changes give it a more dynamic stance and we particularly liked the massive front grille and the dramatically cut wheel arches.

The M-class uses a reworked version of the chassis of the previous M and the ride and handling have both improved. The SUV gets permanent 4WD and the suspension setting can be altered. There is also a new six-stage program with an optional on/off-road package which changes the ride height. The interiors are impressive as well with a superb looking instrument cluster.

The SUV will compete with the BMW X5, the Audi Q7 and the Land Rover Discovery.
