EXTERIOR

The new GL class was recently launched in India with many new upgrades. The exterior of the GL now looks more composed and strong. The front of the SUV gets a chunky new headlamps with the LED integrated lamps in it. The front facial also looks muscular with the twin slat grille occupying the front, the front grille also holds the 3 pointed shiny Mercedes logo in the middle. The new GL class gets the sporty AMG front and rear slats which also looks stylish and changes the overall image of this SUV.

However the side profile of the SUV has a perfect stance which is much needed in a SUV of this size and caliber. It has a huge wheelbase which means that there is enough space for 7 people inside, the GL class has 3 row seating inside. Come to the rear of the SUV and you will find the gorgeous looking Mercedes Benz tail lamps and the large rear windscreen.

The new GL class has an impressive ground clearance and gets 21 inch shiny alloy wheels as a standard equipment for the first 100 GL only with special calipers which looks macho. Mercedes GL is one massive SUV but Mercedes Benz has used light weight materials to keep the overall weight down, this SUV also has good aerodynamics and has less drag efficient than the existing model.

Mercedes has also used lots of chrome on the new GL which makes it more good looking. Still the new GL looks bulky and heavy but on the positive side it is almost 50 mm longer and weighs 50 kg lesser than its predecessor.

INTERIOR

Get inside this new GL and one you will mistake its interiors with your living room because the new GL has tons of space inside.

It has 3 row seating and still there is space to store your luggage at the rear of the SUV. Fold the third row seats and you will find more than enough boot space to accommodate your entire families weekend luggage , what is even better is the fact that you can also fold the 2nd row seats to create some extra space.

"The backrests and seats in the second row can be divided separately in a ratio of 40 : 60 and folded down with little effort to gain access to the third row seats."

Now as far as the seating is concerned well this SUV is very practical which means that you can use the third row seating of the new GL and one can get access to the third row seats by folding the second row seat easily and there is plenty of leg and head room for two adult persons at the last row seats (although it can be bit problematic for a 6 footer). As far as the middle row is concerned there is no doubt that Mercedes offered the best of everything in the GL class, there is good under thigh support along with sufficient leg and head room.

The middle row can easily accommodate 3 adults. Now coming to the front driver seat, the seats are electronically adjustable and one can easily choose their seating position with the flick of a button. As far as the knee room is concerned there is plenty of it available at the front. The driver has a good commanding driving position and a comfortably positioned steering wheel infront of him.

The overall luxurious interiors do not end there, the GL also has a plush interiors adorned with premium quality materials.

"Mercedes also has included a 360 degree rear camera which makes reversing this massive beast a whole lot easier."

It has little touch of brushed metals and chrome inserts on the dashboard and high equipment level, which includes a 3 zone climate control(where the driver, front passenger and rear passengers are able set the temperatures for their respective areas of the vehicle independently), fully powered seats and even a panoramic sunroof for all the three rows, the COMMAND Online system has an audio and navigation systems as well as telephone and internet functions integrated in one single unit. Mercedes also has included a 360 degree rear camera which makes reversing this massive beast a whole lot easier.

DRIVETRAIN

As I already mentioned earlier that the GL class is powered by a 2987cc engine which generates about 258 hp of maximum power at 3600 rpm and 619 Nm of maximum torque at 1600-2400 rpm, the engine has been mated with a 7 speed automatic gearbox. The 3liter V6 motor surely sounds alluring what is even better is the fact that it has been upgraded with more power and torque. Turn the ignition on and the engine sounds smooth and there is absolutely no vibe or unwanted sound which seeps inside the cabin.

There is no absolutely complain with the engine and its performance, it is even more fuel efficient than its predecessor. What could have been improved is the 7G-TRONIC GEARBOX, The new GL also has paddle shifts which makes driving more fun. The SUV easily cruises on the highway without any trouble and although this is a big and heavy SUV still it needs less effort from the driver and you can easily throw the massive SUV into corners. The engine though is not fuel efficient although it now returns better fuel economy than its predecessor, the new GL delivers around 11 km to a liter on the highways and around 7 km to a liter within the city traffic which is bit disappointing but this is one massive beast after all.

The engine specification has been provided below:

ModelEngineMaximum power outputMaximum torque output
GL Class v6 2987 cc 258 hp @ 3600 rpm 619 Nm @ 1600-2400 rpm

RIDE AND HANDLING

The new GL class has 50:50 torque split system which supplies same power ratio to both its front and rear wheels thus keeping the huge SUV balanced. The steering is direct and precise although there is a bit of under steer if you force the GL into corners.

"The all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC offers the best possible traction and increase driving stability on rough and bad roads"

The ride quality is superb in the SUV and it has an Adaptive Damping System ADS, the AIRMATIC air suspension adjusts itself with how you drive the vehicle and the amount of load it is carrying and lastly to the road surface on which it is traveling on. It also has an integral all-round self-leveling function which maintains a constant level for proper balance.

The driver can also switch between comfort-oriented tuning or a sporty one. One can also adjust the ride height of the vehicle depending on the type of terrain they are traveling, all you have to do is press the switch and the SUV will automatically increase its ride height by 75mm. The SUV automatically lowers itself by 15 mm which makes it more aerodynamic and fuel efficient when riding at a speeds of over 70 km/h.

The GL class also has Downhill Speed Regulation DSR which allows the driver to set a speed of their own between 2 to18 km/h, which is maintained by the SUV all the way while descending from the steep slope. So the person driving the vehicle will only have to control the steering and steer the car without stepping on the accelerator or the brakes. So overall the new GL can also be used as a hardcore offroading vehicle if someone wants to. This 2.5 tonne SUV has plenty of power and all the hardware you need to push it to almost anywhere you want.

SAFETY FEATURES

The new GL has been added with plenty of safety features too. It has been fitted with:

- Adaptive headlamp system which adjusts itselg automatically
- The PRE-SAFE® system
- 3-points seat belts with belt tensioners and belt force limiters come as standard for the driver, front passenger and rear passengers(on the outer seats)

COMPETITION

The new Mercedes Benz Gl class gets some serious competition from the Audi Q7.

Audi Q7

Audi Q7 is one of the largest selling SUV’s in the Indian market. Although the Audi brand was introduced much later in the Indian market still the SUV’s from Audi was able to win the hearts of many. It has been powered by a V6 cylinder common rail Diesel engine which generates about 180 KW of maximum power at 3800-4400 rpm and 550 nm of torque at 1750-2750 rpm. The engine has been mated with a 8 speed tiptronic transmission. The Q7 has a comfortable and premium interiors just like its competitor and all the hardware to make it a perfect offroading vehicle.

BMW X5

The BMW X5 is a worthy competitor to the new Gl it has a luxurious interior and has been fitted with plenty of hardware just like the new GL Class which makes it a worthy competitor. However the new X5 is offered with a single diesel engine option in India. The 3.0 Liter TwinPower Turbo technology (turbocharger with variable inlet geometry, common rail direct injection) has a displacement of 2,993 cc. This engine generates a maximum power output of 190 kW/258 hp at 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) at 1,500 – 3,000 rpm. The variant has a top speed of 230 km/h and can reach 0-100 km/h mark in just 6.9 seconds. The BME X5 is priced at Rs.70.9 Lakh ex showroom.

CONCLUSION

Overall this new GL class is a huge improvement over its predecessor it has got a massive exterior appearance of a SUV and a comfortable interiors for all the 7 persons onboard. The powerful engine is a boon for this massive SUV because it pulls this massive beast like a normal everyday car. The ride and handling quality too is superb in this new GL. What is little on the downside though is the massive size and the weight which can be felt every time you step on the brakes, it takes some time to stop although it has been fitted with good quality brakes and an advanced braking system. Priced at 77 lakhs this 2nd generation GL is cheaper than its predecessor and will surely give other SUV of its class some serious competition.

QUOTE

“A premium luxury SUV from Mercedes-Benz, the GL-Class qualifies in all aspects of being a comfortable, luxurious and rugged off-roader. Its big brute image is further enhanced by its sheer dimensions. The GL-Class offers a rather plush ride on tarmac and is a great mile muncher. Capable of seating seven passengers comfortably, the GL is probably one of the most opulent people movers that you’ll find in the country”—Zigwheels India

The Mercedes GL is another example of platform sharing and the SUV is based on the Mercedes R-Class, which in turn is based on the Mercedes ML. While the R-Class is a crossover aiming to deliver versatility and utility, the ML is a SUV. The Mercedes GL was launched in India in 2010 and was primarily made to cater to North American tastes, its large size being a case in point. The seven seater hasn’t been as big a success in India as the Audi Q7 and its steep price and lack of cheaper and smaller engine options is hurting the sales as both theAudi Q7 and the BMW X5 are cheaper than the GL. Prices for the GL start from Rs73,43,013 and the more expensive GL500 is for Rs81,38,944 ex-showroom New Delhi.
