Mercedes Benz E-Class

Mercedes has been selling the current generation E Class model since the year 2010 and there is no denying that the E-Class is definitely considered as one of the top contenders of the mid-size luxury car segment and perhaps the toughest competitor for the BMW 5 Series and equally popular Audi A6. Mercedes gave the fourth generation E Class a thorough makeover back in 2014 and now it is clear to everyone that they will be introducing a completely new generation car to the scene.

Our photographers were able to capture some spyshots of the recent prototype while it was being tested on road. This is definitely one of the prestigious products for Mercedes and they have left no stones unturned to make the upcoming mid-size luxury sedan one of the most advanced cars of its class. The new E Class is pinned on the MRA platform which also underpins the new C-Class. The new platform makes the new generation E-Class lighter as well as rigid because it uses lot of lightweight materials in its construction.

Under its hood rumors are that it will get new inline 6 cylinder engines which will replace the existing V6 unit, the engine will also be paired to a completely new nine speed automatic transmission as well. So degrading the size of the engines will definitely increase its fuel efficiency but whether the new smaller engines will be exciting to drive? Well perhaps we have to wait for few more months in order to get our answers. Recently Mercedes has also unveiled the cabin of the new E-Class which actually draws its inspiration from S-Class cabin which actually makes this whole lot interesting I guess.

This upcoming sedan will make its global premiere at the 2016 Detroit Motor show in January and as you all can expect the new E will definitely look more stylish, will have a more sophisticated and luxurious cabin packed with new features and perhaps many more.

New Nomenclature from Mercedes

New Nomenclature from Mercedes

Last year Mercedes Benz announced that they are working on new nomenclature system for naming their cars. It seems they have introduced the system already, as we have seen in some Mercedes cars. Usually, the C, E and S class cars are coming up with this new naming pattern, where diesel cars comes with a ‘d’ letter in the badge instead of CDI.

For example, if S 350 will be called S 350 d, instead of S 350 CDI. This new pattern in naming badges is applicable only in diesel segment strictly although. The petrol powered cars remain same.

We have seen this nomenclature pattern in the BMW vehicles, now Mercedes seems to follow the same way in India like their German competitor. They have a plan for new naming pattern for their fleet of electric cars and natural gas powered cars too. In that case, electric cars will come up with a letter ‘e’ and the CNG powered cars will come with a letter ‘c’. Fuel cell cars will come with ‘f’ word in their name, while the hybrid cars will come with a letter ‘h’. The new naming pattern seems to have begun in India, and we guess, soon the entire fleet of diesel cars will come up featuring new nomenclature.

Mercedes-Benz E350 variant to be available soon

Mercedes-Benz E350 variant to be available soon

Mercedes Benz will reintroduce one of the discontinued variants of the current generation E-Class sedan soon.

The W212 E-Class was launched in India back in 2009. In 2013, Mercedes Benz launched current generation E-Class in the country. The company offered four-pot petrol and diesel engine variants of the E-Class alongside the AMG model. That said, the E350 with its V-6 engine was left out. The economic scenario was not conducive for a high performance sedan like the E350 and the lack of interest in the model forced the company to drop it from the price list.

It is not just Mercedes-Benz who is facing troubles with selling a top-spec saloon in the segment. BMW, Audi and Jaguar too have struggled to sell models in that price range. However, Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO, Eberhard Kern believes now with the E350 out, there’s a big gap between the current top-spec E250 CDI and the AMG model. This could only indicate that Mercedes has plans to reintroduce the E350 in India.

The E350 will be based around the latest design of the E-Class. The present generation E-Class is amongst the most attractive mid-sized premium sedans available in the market today. The Jaguar XF is the only other car that comes close to rival the looks of the E-Class.

Also, the other variants of the E-Class also have seen renewed interest in recent times with order books filling up faster than the company can replenish the stocks. The new variant of the E-Class could be launched sometime during the festive season with prices starting at just under INR 60 lakh.

2011 Mercedes E-Class Coupe

2011 Mercedes E-Class Coupe

If you’re looking for style and brand recognition and have money to spend, the regular E-class or its competitors won’t rock your boat. A cabriolet is just too impractical for our country and a viable option would be a coupe. Launched in India in 2009, the E-class coupe serves a purpose that the sedan cannot. The E-class coupe combines the fascination and efficiency associated withMercedes and is aimed the young affluent buyer who isn’t shy to be noticed. Priced at Rs 64.5lakh on-road New Delhi, the coupe is 11lakhs more expensive than the sedan and unfortunately is offered in India with only a V6, 3-litre petrol engine. There is not an option of a more powerful petrol or a more efficient diesel which is also the problem with the cabriolet. The Coupe is a CBU (completely build unit) which sure does make it expensive but its competitor Audi A7 is similarly priced and is offered only in a diesel.

2011 Mercedes E350 Cabriolet

2011 Mercedes E350 Cabriolet

The two type of cars that we think don’t make sense in India are supercars and convertibles. But then these are the two type of cars that you can have the most fun in. Few experiences can beat the feeling of freedom while driving with the roof down and the attention that you get while driving a cabriolet around town is flattering to say the least. The biggest problem with cabriolets in India is the weather but if you have money in your pocket then that shouldn’t be reason enough for you not to consider buying one. After all it is the charm of driving a convertible with the top down that can beat even the possibility of getting a heatstroke. Cabriolets like the Mercedes E350 are rear to see on Indian roads and the exclusivity associated with them makes them ever so desirable. The Mercedes E350 Cabriolet is priced at Rs 64.5lakh ex-showroom Delhi and is the seventh offering within the E-Class range by Mercedes in India.

OVERVIEW 2010 Mercedes E-Class

2010 Mercedes E-Class

The ecstasy from the ‘E’ was fizzled out first by the arrival of the BMW 5-Series and then by the Audi A6. No longer was the Mercedes Benz E-Class the quintessential automotive aspiration. While around the world and in India there remain people who want their first luxury car to carry the three pointed star at the bonnet, an increasing number of people have now started to appreciate the superior driving dynamics of a BMW and the better packaged Audi’s. Mercedes was fast losing ground in India as its German rivals found favor amongst more and more buyers. The manufacturer responded to the decline in sales by not wasting time in bringing the new E-Class into the Indian market after its international launch. Before the launch of the E-Class they also started a strong PR campaign to change public perspective that Mercs can’t be fun to drive by introducing the AMG line up in India and then organizing road shows to showcase the potential of the Mercedes Benz cars and the AMG’s. With the 2010 E-Class the manufacturer is attempting to turn a page by trying to make the sedan dynamically closer to the 5-Series (as you will read latter on in the review) while not compromising on luxury which it is famous for. With prices starting from Rs40,72,855 to Rs50,59,058 for the diesel and Rs39,91,684 to Rs49,50,118 for the petrol ex-showroom New Delhi, how good and improved is the new E-Class?
