Mercedes E-Class

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a mid-sized luxury automobile sold by the Mercedes-Benz branch of DaimlerChrysler. The model line is available with various six and eight-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. The E stood for Einspritzung, which is German for fuel injection, which was a very new feature at the time the "E" first appeared in the 1950s. The E-Class is the bestselling Mercedes-Benz model worldwide.

2017 Mercedes Benz E-Class

Mercedes has been selling the current generation E Class model since the year 2010 and there is no denying that the E-Class is definitely considered as one of the top contenders of the mid-size luxury car segment and perhaps the toughest competitor for the BMW 5 Series and equally popular Audi A6. Mercedes gave the fourth generation E Class a thorough makeover back in 2014 and now it is clear to everyone that they will be introducing a completely new generation car to the scene.

Our photographers were able to capture some spyshots of the recent prototype while it was being tested on road. This is definitely one of the prestigious products for Mercedes and they have left no stones unturned to make the upcoming mid-size luxury sedan one of the most advanced cars of its class. The new E Class is pinned on the MRA platform which also underpins the new C-Class. The new platform makes the new generation E-Class lighter as well as rigid because it uses lot of lightweight materials in its construction.

Under its hood rumors are that it will get new inline 6 cylinder engines which will replace the existing V6 unit, the engine will also be paired to a completely new nine speed automatic transmission as well. So degrading the size of the engines will definitely increase its fuel efficiency but whether the new smaller engines will be exciting to drive? Well perhaps we have to wait for few more months in order to get our answers. Recently Mercedes has also unveiled the cabin of the new E-Class which actually draws its inspiration from S-Class cabin which actually makes this whole lot interesting I guess.

This upcoming sedan will make its global premiere at the 2016 Detroit Motor show in January and as you all can expect the new E will definitely look more stylish, will have a more sophisticated and luxurious cabin packed with new features and perhaps many more.

EXTERIOR

The new Mercedes E-Class as already mentioned above uses a completely new MRA rear wheel drive platform which has actually helped it to shed some serious amount of weight as we have seen with the new C-Class. Although the prototypes caught in the spyshots was wrapped in heavy camouflage but keeping in mind Mercedes-Benz’s current design language we are pretty sure that the new E Class too will have the same face that we have seen on some recently launched Mercedes products.

The E-Class which is codenamed W213 seems like that it has taken some styling cues from the C-Class as we have already seen in the newly launched teaser video gets completely newly designed headlamps which gets a set of 84 LED’s in the shape of Boomerang. The interesting thing about the new headlamp DRL’s is that it actually has two colors, apart from the White light the LED’s also emits Blue lights as well. Just like what we saw in the Audi’s matrix headlamp setup that it does not blind the oncoming traffic when the high beams are used. The overall silhouette of the car also looks roundish in shape. Towards the front you will also notice a new grille while the lower bumpers will also get bigger air vents as well.

Towards the side profile the new E-Class will also get new set of wheels and rear ORVM’s finished in body color while you can also notice the side door handles are also finished in body color as well. Although the rear profile of the car too has been wrapped in heavy camouflage but it will most probably get duel exhaust at the back and newly designed taillamps units completed with LED lamps.

INTERIOR

Surprisingly Mercedes-Benz has already released the production ready interior images of the upcoming E-Class even before its launch. Perhaps this has been done to attract the attention of the potential customers from all across the world.

There is no doubt in the fact that new E-Class interior looks absolutely gorgeous, take a single glance and you could easily tell that the new cabin of the E-Class has taken its styling inspiration from the new generation S and C-Class. The flowing dashboard curves definitely will attract your attention as it also gets a huge 12.3 inch touchscreen for the infotainment system while there is also another 12.1 inch touchscreen display behind the steering wheel which displays the speedometer, rev counter and many other statuses related to the car.

The steering wheel in particular also received a new feature which comes in the form of touch sensitive buttons. This buttons can actually detect horizontal as well vertical swipes, this feature will help control all the functions of the infotainment system using only their thumb. The COMMAND infotainment system also gets improved graphics and new menus and screens. The new generation E-Class also gets ambient lighting system as well complete with the choices of 64 colors, there is also an optional Burmester 3D surround sound system as well available with 23 speaker setup.

For those who are looking for sophistication Mercedes will provide a huge range of high-grade leathers and wood inserts to spruce up the cabin. Lastly you can also expect more legroom availability towards the rear seat because of the new platform.

DRIVETRAIN

Initially the new generation E-Class will be available with the choices of two engine options which includes the E200 which gets a four cylinder petrol engine, the 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine is capable of producing about 184 Hp of peak power and 300 Nm of torque. This engine is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h mark in just 7.7 seconds. On the other hand the E220d will be available with an all new 2.0 Litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine which will be capable of producing about 195 Hp of peak power and 400 Nm of torque. This engine is capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h mark on 7.2 seconds.

Some other models which will joining the bandwagon later will be the E 350 e which will use a hybrid powertrain, this powertrain will feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine which is capable of producing about 205 Hp and 350 Nm of torque along with an electric motor which puts an additional 82 Hp of peak power and 360 Nm of torque. Now combined both this engine produces an impressive 279 Hp of peak power and an impressive 600 Nm of torque. This particular model can also be driven 30 Kilometers on just the electric motor. As far as its performance is concerned the E 350 e is capable of sprinting in 6.2 seconds.

The last and the most powerful engine on offer is the E 350 d which is powered by a 3.0 Litre V6 turbo diesel motor, this engine produces 258 Hp of peak power and 620 Nm of torque. The performance figures too look really impressive the E 350 d variant can sprint from 0-100 km/h mark in just 5.9 seconds.

All the above models will be paired to a new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission as standard.

COMPETITION

AUDI A6

Audi A6 definitely one of the most popular German luxury sedan around the globe. The stylish and elegant sedan will be E-Class’s prime rival once Mercedes launch their flagship sedan’s latest generation model. The 2015 Audi A6 is powered by a 2.0 litre TDI diesel engine mated to a 7 speed S-Tronic automatic gearbox, which is capable to produce 190 hp peak power and 400 Nm peak torque.

BMW 5 SERIES

BMW 530d is the top end model in the 5 Series lineup, which is only available in M Sport trim. It gets power from a 3.0 liter twin turbocharged diesel engine, which produces 258 hp peak power and 560 Nm peak torque. On the other hand the 525d is the mid range BMW 5 Series sedan, which is powered by a 2.0 liter diesel unit that kicks out 218 hp peak power and 415 Nm peak torque. The base variant 520d gets power from a 2.0 liter diesel unit, which delivers 184 hp peak power and 380 Nm peak torque.

CONCLUSION

There’s still enough time to make a conclusion about the upcoming Mercedes Benz E-Class, but as we have seen the model till now, it seems the car will be a really tough fighter against its rivals. The styling job done by Mercedes definitely makes it dynamic looking modern age E-Class.

The new E-Class: The most intelligent business saloon

Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz taking a big step into the future with the new E‑Class. Tenth-generation business saloon delivers stylish highlights with its distinct, emotive design and high-grade interior. New E-Class also marks the world premiere of numerous technical innovations. They enable comfortable, safe driving on a new level plus a new dimension in driver assistance – among other things. Complete with infotainment and control systems offering an all‑new experience. Likewise exemplary: a newly developed diesel engine coupled with lightweight design and record-breaking aerodynamics figures set the standards for efficiency in this segment, while new, optionally available multi-chamber air suspension ensures outstanding ride comfort and driving dynamics. The sum total of its innovations, including the Active Lane-change Assistant which allows the driver to steer into the selected lane as if by magic, make the E-Class the most intelligent saloon in the business class.

"The E-Class is the core of the Mercedes-Benz brand and in the past has repeatedly redefined the standards in the business-class segment. Now it carries this tradition into the future with a wealth of top-class innovations. The new E-Class takes another major step towards fully autonomous driving. In addition, it enhances efficiency, safety and comfort, reduces the stress level when driving and intensifies the motoring pleasure", says Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

Coupé-esque and powerful

The new E-Class is sophisticated, confidently stylish and sporty. Compared with its predecessor, its wheelbase length has grown by 65 millimetres (2939/2874), its overall length by 43 millimetres (4923/4880). Its design displays hallmark Mercedes-Benz saloon proportions. The elongated bonnet coupled with a coupé-esque roof flowing into a sensual, broad-shouldered tail end creates an exciting silhouette. The powerfully extended vehicle body is characterised by short overhangs, a long wheelbase, large wheels and taut well-defined flanks displaying a fresh, stylish and dynamic interpretation of the feature line. All of which allows the E-Class to deliver the perfect take on the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy: Sensual Purity.
A powerfully designed front end underlines the status the business-class saloon aspires to, boasting a different look for each design and equipment line. The base version features the classic Mercedes radiator grille with the star on the bonnet, as does the EXCLUSIVE line – albeit in an even more elaborate fashion. The AVANTGARDE and AMG Line models are identifiable by the sports radiator grille with a large Mercedes star as its centrepiece. Each of the radiator grille designs lends the E-Class a distinct character, offering a unique degree of diversity that makes each different model stand out.
At the rear end, broad shoulders above the rear wheel arches lend the E-Class its unmistakably powerful character. Single-piece tail lights featuring a two-bar design framed by the vehicle body clearly identify the E-Class as a new member of the Mercedes saloon family. Optionally available rear lights provide an additional highlight reminiscent of stardust, the Milky Way or the glow of a jet engine. This "stardust effect" is created by innovative reflector technology with a specially configured surface structure for the tail lights and is making its debut appearance on the new E-Class.

Next Level Interior Design

The interior of the new E-Class embodies the synthesis of emotion and intelligence, poles that are defined by the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy – distinct forms with a sensual flow to them. Optional extras include two next-generation high-resolution displays, each with a wide screen diagonal of 12.3 inches – a first in this segment. Beneath their shared glass cover, the two displays visually conflate into a wide-screen cockpit that seems to be hovering in thin air, creating a central element that emphasises the horizontal orientation of the interior design. As the instrument cluster, this wide-screen cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver as well as a central display above the centre console. The driver can choose between three different styles to select their preferred design for the wide-screen instrument cluster: "Classic", "Sport" and "Progressive".

In addition, touch-sensitive control buttons (’Touch Controls’) on the steering wheel make their first appearance in a car. Like a smartphone interface, they respond precisely to horizontal and vertical swiping movements, allowing the driver to control the entire infotainment system using finger swipes without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. In keeping with the motto "hands on the wheel, eyes on the road“, this allows achieving minimum driver distraction.

Further controls for the infotainment system are provided in the shape of a touchpad with controller in the centre console, which can even recognise handwriting, and the LINGUATRONIC voice control system. There are also direct-access buttons for controlling functions such as the air-conditioning system or – in another first – for convenient activation and deactivation of certain driver assistance systems.
A new, intelligent graphic design with high-resolution visualisations and animations, together with a simplified logic, further enhances this all-new operating experience. At the same time, the occupants enjoy a sensual interior with spacious architecture, which combines the elegance of the luxury class with accomplished sportiness.

Intelligent material design

High-quality materials define the interior style. They include open-pore woods, wood in a yachting look with flowing lines as a contemporary interpretation of inlaid wood and a novel metal fabric. The use of authentic materials is continued in the leather-covered doors and the beltline for selected lines. Another Mercedes hallmark clearly in evidence is the high-quality look and feel created through meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Just as carefully composed is the material/colour concept with various shades of brown, including new attractive colour combinations such as nut brown/macchiato and saddle brown/macchiato. This allows a personalised interior design.
Lighting atmosphere with 64 colours

The interior lighting makes exclusive use of durable, energy-saving LED technology. The same applies to the enhanced ambient lighting included in the lines. With 64 colours, it offers a host of possibilities for personalisation. It adds touches of light, for example, to the trim parts, central display, front stowage facility on the centre console, handle recesses, door pockets, front and rear footwells, overhead console, and tweeters (if the vehicle is equipped with the Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system).

Seat design: first class

A further highlight of the new E-Class is its seats. Their ergonomic, sculptural form combines Mercedes-Benz’s hallmark suitability for long journeys with a refined, sporty look, featuring a unique design for each line. Another new feature in this segment is a Heat Comfort package including heated armrests in the doors and on the centre console.

The rear bench seat in the new E-Class Saloon comes with the option of a three-piece backrest with a 40% - 20% - 40% split, making it exceptionally versatile. Integral features of the centre armrest include a stowage box and two pop-out drinks holders. There is also the option of a holder for a tablet PC for the rear passengers.

New engine generation

The new E-Class will come with a choice of two engines at market launch: the E 200 with a four-cylinder petrol engine and the E 220 d with an all-new four-cylinder diesel engine.

Further model variants will be added to the range after the market launch, including the E 350 e featuring hybrid technology. The PLUG-IN HYBRID impresses with its dynamism and efficiency, allowing around 30 kilometres of purely electric and therefore locally emission-free driving. Its four-cylinder petrol engine, in conjunction with a powerful electric motor, gives it a total system output of 205 kW (279 hp) with a system torque of 600 Nm. With this set-up, the E 350 e achieves the performance of a sports car yet consumes less fuel than a small, compact-class car.
The most powerful diesel variant will boast a six-cylinder engine incorporating advanced SCR exhaust technology, with an output of 190 kW (258 hp) and a peak torque of 620 Nm.

Another variant to join the range will be the E 400 4MATIC whose six-cylinder petrol engine has an output of 245 kW (333 hp) and a maximum torque of 480 Nm.

Engines boasting top efficiency

Further variants will later complete the engine range, including a new four-cylinder diesel unit developing 110 kW (150 hp). The range of petrol engines will comprise four-cylinder versions with outputs ranging from 135 to 180 kW (183 to 245 hp) plus a six-cylinder variant developing 245 kW (333 hp).

All engines for the new E-Class are equipped with the ECO start/stop function. The petrol engines meet the requirements of the EU 6 emissions standard, while the new OM 654 four-cylinder diesel engine is already configured with future RDE limits in mind.

All-new four-cylinder diesel engine

The new four-cylinder diesel unit marks the birth of a new Mercedes-Benz engine family and opens up new dimensions in efficiency. What’s more, it is shorter and more compact than its predecessor thanks to reduced cylinder spacing (90 mm instead of 94 mm). Despite having a lower displacement than its predecessor, reduced to around two litres, the new diesel powerplant has an output of 143 kW/195 hp and, when installed in the E 220 d, delivers NEDC combined consumption of just 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres, which equates to CO2 emissions of 102 grams per kilometre – a figure that until now only significantly smaller vehicles have been able to deliver.

In addition to this, the four-cylinder unit is exceptionally refined. In its basic form it features single-stage turbocharging and variable turbine geometry. Both the cylinder head and the crankcase are made of aluminium. The Mercedes-Benz developed NANOSLIDE® surface coating efficiently reduces the friction between cylinder surface and steel piston.

Nine-speed automatic

All models available at market launch are equipped with the new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission as standard. It enables fast gear changes and allows low engine revs, which has a particularly beneficial effect on efficiency and noise levels.

Suspension – sporty comfort

The suspension on the new E-Class offers agile driving pleasure on twisting roads as well as the highest level of ride comfort in this segment. The Saloon comes with steel suspension as standard. Three DIRECT CONTROL suspension systems with selective damping system are available in conjunction with this suspension:
Comfort suspension

Comfortable Avantgarde suspension with a sportier character, lowered by 15 millimetres

Sporty suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, lowered by 15 millimetres, which replaces the classic sports suspension

AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension

Alternatively the new E-Class can be equipped with multi-chamber air suspension all round – the only car in its segment to offer this option. Advantages of this system: Three chambers of different size in the spring struts of the rear axle and two in the spring struts of the front axle make it possible to control, in three stages, how stiffly the suspension reacts. In this way, the occupants enjoy soft base suspension, and the secure feeling of good handling stability as the speed increases.
Furthermore, the highly sensitive and fast-responding AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension features all-round self-levelling for excellent ride comfort even with the vehicle loaded. It controls the ride height automatically depending on the speed and reduces fuel consumption on the motorway, for example, by lowering the vehicle. When driving on rough roads or access roads, the ground clearance can also be increased at the push of a button using the ride height adjustment switch.
The multi-chamber air suspension is supplemented by a continuously operating, electronically controlled damping adjustment system, which adapts the damping at each individual wheel to the current driving situation and road conditions fully automatically – when performing evasive manoeuvres or driving on poor road surfaces, for instance. The system therefore delivers good road roar and tyre vibration characteristics, excellent ride comfort, and outstanding driving dynamics.
What’s more, a DYNAMIC SELECT switch in the cockpit enables the driver to select from four AIR BODY CONTROL modes: "Comfort", "ECO", "Sport" and "Sport+". The additional "Individual" option allows drivers to configure their vehicle to suit their own preferences.

Next-generation driver assistance systems

Mercedes-Benz’s new assistance and safety systems enhance safety, comfort and driver assistance to new levels.

Active Brake Assist, fitted as standard, is able to warn the driver of impending crash situations, provide just the right level of support during emergency braking and, if necessary, also apply the brakes automatically itself. In addition to slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles, it can also detect pedestrians crossing the danger zone ahead of the vehicle.

Likewise included as standard are ATTENTION ASSIST with adjustable sensitivity, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness, and Crosswind Assist, which can assist the driver by substantially mitigating the effects of strong crosswinds to prevent the vehicle from drifting too far off track.

Highlights of the optional Driver Assistance package that make the E-Class the most intelligent saloon in its class include:

DRIVE PILOT: This system represents Mercedes-Benz’s next step along the road to autonomous driving. As Distance Pilot DISTRONIC on motorways and country roads, it is not only able to keep the car the correct distance behind vehicles in front automatically, it can also follow them at a speed of up to 210 km/h for the first time. This can make life easier for the driver, who no longer needs to operate the brake or accelerator pedal during normal driving and also receives plenty of steering assistance from the Steering Pilot – even on moderate bends. Another unique feature at speeds up to 130 km/h is the fact that, like in a swarm, the system can continue to intervene actively by taking account of surrounding vehicles and parallel structures, even if the lines are unclear or non-existent, like at road works. The system therefore makes driving much easier, especially in traffic jams or heavy congestion. Another feature that helps to relieve the workload on the driver in such situations is the extended restart function, which allows automatic starting of the vehicle within 30 seconds following a stop initiated by the Distance Pilot DISTRONIC on motorways or similar roads.Further new development designed to relieve stress: in combination with COMAND Online, the selectable Speed Limit Pilot subfunction can autonomously adjust the vehicle’s speed in response to camera-detected speed limits or speed limits logged in the navigation system, e.g. 50 km/h in built-up areas or 100 km/h on country roads. Additional DRIVE PILOT innovations include, for the first time, an Active Lane-change Assistant. This radar- and camera-based assistance system assists the driver when changing lanes on multi-lane roads and can steer the vehicle into the lane selected by the driver – when overtaking, for example. Once the driver has indicated to turn for at least two seconds, the Active Lane-change Assistant assists with steering into the adjacent lane if it detects that the lane is unoccupied.
Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function: Compared with the standard version, this system has extended speed thresholds with respect to vehicles and pedestrians. Furthermore, it can detect crossing traffic at junctions and, if the driver fails to respond, apply the brakes autonomously. For the first time, it can also detect hazardous situations at the tail end of traffic jams where there is no room to manoeuvre and initiate autonomous braking far sooner in such situations. Consequently, it is possible to completely avoid accidents at speeds up to 100 km/h or substantially reduce the severity of accidents at speeds above this level.
Evasive Steering Assist: This likewise new system ideally complements the pedestrian detection function of Active Brake Assist. When the driver deliberately or instinctively performs an evasive manoeuvre in a dangerous situation, this function can assist by adding precisely calculated steering torque to support the movement of the steering wheel. This helps the driver to avoid the pedestrian in a controlled manner while subsequently facilitating the straightening-up of the vehicle to allow the situation to be negotiated safely.

Advanced assistance systems: The intelligent assistance systems in the new Driver Assistance package also include proven systems that have been further developed in terms of their mode of operation and the sensors they use. Active Lane Keeping Assist can help stop the driver from unintentionally changing lane, this being done by corrective one-sided application of the brakes, including in the case of broken lines and risk of collision, e.g. with oncoming traffic or fast overtaking vehicles. Active Blind Spot Assist can now also warn of the risk of a lateral collision in typical urban traffic at low speeds and, as before, correctively intervene at the last moment to prevent a collision at speeds above 30 km/h. PRE-SAFE® PLUS can protect against collisions with traffic following behind and their effects on the occupants.
Furthermore, the range of new features in the new E-Class includes:

Remote Parking Pilot: For this first time, this system allows the vehicle to be moved into and out of garages and parking spaces remotely using a smartphone app, enabling the occupants to get into and out of the car easily, even if space is very tight.
Car-to-X communication: In 2013, Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to introduce widespread car-to-car networking in the form of a retrofit solution. This is now to be followed by the logical next step as the world’s first fully integral Car-to-X solution goes into series production. The mobile phone-supported exchange of information with other vehicles further ahead on the road, for example, can effectively allow the driver to "see around corners" or "through obstacles" well in advance. This means that the driver receives an earlier warning than previously in the event of imminent danger, such as a broken down vehicle at the edge of the road or also in the event of heavy rain or black ice on the road ahead. In this case the new E-Class simultaneously acts as a receiver and a transmitter, since warning messages are conveyed automatically by evaluating vehicle statuses or manually by the driver to the backend.

PRE-SAFE® impulse side: This system is part of the Driving Assistance package PLUS. If a lateral collision has been detected and is imminent, it moves the driver or front passenger away from the danger zone in a sideways direction by way of precaution. To do this, the system inflates an air chamber in the side bolster of the front seat backrest nearest the side of the imminent impact in a fraction of a second, thus increasing the distance between occupant and door and, at the same time, reducing the forces acting on the occupants.

PRE-SAFE® Sound: This system is based on a human reflex in the inner ear, called the stapedius reflex. PRE-SAFE® Sound emits a short interference signal through the vehicle’s sound system if the risk of a collision is detected. This signal can trigger the natural reflex and thus prepare the occupants’ ears for the expected sound of the accident.

High-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, each with 84 individually controlled high-performance LEDs, automatically illuminate the road with a hitherto unsurpassed, precision-controlled distribution of exceptionally bright light – without dazzling other road users. That’s because this grid allows the light distribution of the left and right headlamps to be controlled separately and adapted to the changing situation on the road quickly and dynamically. All functions of the Intelligent Light System in low-beam and high-beam mode can furthermore be depicted purely digitally and without mechanical actuators for the first time, including, as a world first, a purely electronically implemented active light function.

Digital Vehicle Key: This drive authorisation system uses Near Field Communication technology and allows the driver’s smartphone to be used as a vehicle key.

Multifunction Telephony – ideally connected, and not a cable in sight
An all-new infotainment generation is making its debut in the E-Class equipped with COMAND Online. Its highlights, alongside the double display, include the touch-sensitive Touch Control Buttons on the steering wheel and the new, intelligent graphic design of the Multifunction Telephony. It allows mobile phones to be charged and connected to the vehicle’s exterior aerial – with absolutely no need for cables or a telephone holder. The wireless, inductive charging system works
with all mobile devices that either support the Qi standard or can be upgraded to this standard. The charging pad, built into the stowage facility at the front of the centre console, is compatible with mobile phones with a screen diagonal of up to 15.2 cm (6 inches). When the "NFC" logo is touched, the system connects the mobile phone to the head unit and the exterior aerials via Near Field Communication (NFC). Telephone calls are then routed via the Bluetooth® hands‑free system automatically.

Three-dimensional listening pleasure

Fitted as standard, the Mercedes-Benz-developed Frontbass system in the new E‑Class delivers a unique listening experience. It uses the space in the cross-member and side member of the body structure as a resonance chamber for the bass speakers. If the vehicle is additionally equipped with the optionally available Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system with 23 loudspeakers, the occupants are treated to a listening experience reminiscent of the acoustics in a concert hall as it includes a third dimension of sound courtesy of roof loudspeakers.
Robust yet lightweight bodyshell

An outstandingly stiff body forms the basis for exceptional handling, astonishingly low noise and vibration levels, and a high level of crash safety. To achieve this, the engineers opted for a bodyshell with a far higher proportion of aluminium and ultra-high-strength steel components than its predecessor. The front wings, bonnet, boot lid, and large sections of the front and rear ends are made of sheet or cast aluminium. This lightweight design reduces fuel consumption and makes for tangibly sporty and agile vehicle handling.

Against the wind

Aerodynamic performance is one of the main reasons behind the outstanding efficiency of the new E-Class. Here the E-Class raises the benchmark with a record-breaking drag coefficient (cd value) of 0.23. To achieve this, the aerodynamics experts had to optimise numerous details and implement new ideas. By way of example, the AIRPANEL Advanced shutter system, available for most engines in the EXCLUSIVE line and base models, opens the radiator grille by means of adjustable louvres when extra cooling is required and additionally features a second shutter in
the air intake beneath the number plate to further improve the system’s overall performance. Plus the sophisticated aerodynamics minimise wind noise and ensure that the new E-Class is quieter than even some luxury-class models.

Mercedes recently took the wraps off the E Class recently ands like we expected the new E took its styling inspiration from the new generation C and the flagship S Class. We are also aware of the fact that Mercedes also introduces number of body types of their standard variants which includes a Coupe as well as the more powerful and sport AMG variant. Now our spy photographers were able to capture the spy shot images of the upcoming E-Class Coupe while it was being tested and based on the spyshots we have also prepared a rendered image of the soon to be launched E-Class Coupe also.

Now there is still some time for the 2 door coupe to break its cover but we are providing you detailed information of what we know until now about this upcoming car. As usual the spyshots of the test mule which was caught testing was wrapped in heavy camouflage but there were few bits which actually give us little hint of what you all could expect out of the E-Class Coupe.

Under the hood the E Class Coupe will share the same drivetrains with the sedan but there will also be some more powerful variants on offer too in the near future including the AMG variant as well.

Mercedes has took the wraps of their fifth generation E-Class at the recently held Detroit Auto show and apart from the thoroughly revised exterior and interior the new generation E Class also gets plenty of technology equipped in this new sedan. The new midsize luxury sedan also gets a diesel as well a petrol engine options initially while the German premium luxury car maker will offer a hybrid powertrain and a more powerful 3.0 Litre V6 turbo diesel motor later.

As far as the styling of the exterior is concerned we already have informed earlier that the new generation E-Class will definitely take its styling inspiration from the recently launched C and their flagship sedan S Class. While the interiors takes its heavy dose of inspiration from the new S Class as well be it the huge digital screen on the dashboard or the wraparound dashboard finished with high quality materials everything looks upmarket.

Mercedes has still not revealed anything about one other variant which will join the E-Class lineup which is the sportier AMG variant. As we all are quite aware of the fact that the current generation E 63 AMG is already available for sale in the Indian market so we all Indians could definitely expect that Mercedes will be introducing the new generation E 63 AMG as well as soon as it is launched in the International market.

Our spy photographers already caught the new fifth generation E Class based AMG variant while it was being tested and also created a rendered image of this upcoming sportier variant of the E-Class. So apart from the new chassis you can also expect the upcoming E 63 AMG to be a lot lighter as well.

New Nomenclature from Mercedes

New Nomenclature from Mercedes

New Nomenclature from Mercedes

Last year Mercedes Benz announced that they are working on new nomenclature system for naming their cars. It seems they have introduced the system already, as we have seen in some Mercedes cars. Usually, the C, E and S class cars are coming up with this new naming pattern, where diesel cars comes with a ‘d’ letter in the badge instead of CDI.

For example, if S 350 will be called S 350 d, instead of S 350 CDI. This new pattern in naming badges is applicable only in diesel segment strictly although. The petrol powered cars remain same.

We have seen this nomenclature pattern in the BMW vehicles, now Mercedes seems to follow the same way in India like their German competitor. They have a plan for new naming pattern for their fleet of electric cars and natural gas powered cars too. In that case, electric cars will come up with a letter ‘e’ and the CNG powered cars will come with a letter ‘c’. Fuel cell cars will come with ‘f’ word in their name, while the hybrid cars will come with a letter ‘h’. The new naming pattern seems to have begun in India, and we guess, soon the entire fleet of diesel cars will come up featuring new nomenclature.

Elegance, Class and Engineering are perhaps the three parameters which describes the new E Class Cabriolet perfectly. However as the other Cabriolets are adopting sportier Avatar Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet likes to keep the old heritage and traditions alive and has not actually changed the old cloth top roof with some more sophisticated foldable hard top and quite honestly if you ask me it looks classy. Unfortunately this car is counted as amongst one of the few open top 4 seater convertible available yet in the market.

Mercedes Benz introduced the new E Class in 2013 and as expected with many body forms including the Coupe, Estate, Cabriolet and sedan forms. The German premium auto manufacturer launched the E Class sedan and the more powerful AMG E63 AMG in India already and now there are talks that they will also be introducing the Cabriolet in India which will be targeted towards the niche audience of the country. That said, let us focus on the car which looks dead gorgeous and can make you fall in love with it again and again.

The E Class Cabriolet is available with different engine options but the car that has been chosen for our Indian market is the E400 Cabriolet which is powered by a V6 unit and produces an impressive amount of power and torque at the same time. This may not serve you as your daily drive but can surely top your luxury parameter and fulfill all your wishes during a weekend getway trip with your friends and family.

Mercedes-Benz E350 variant to be available soon

Mercedes-Benz E350 variant to be available soon

Mercedes-Benz E350 variant to be available soon

Mercedes Benz will reintroduce one of the discontinued variants of the current generation E-Class sedan soon.

The W212 E-Class was launched in India back in 2009. In 2013, Mercedes Benz launched current generation E-Class in the country. The company offered four-pot petrol and diesel engine variants of the E-Class alongside the AMG model. That said, the E350 with its V-6 engine was left out. The economic scenario was not conducive for a high performance sedan like the E350 and the lack of interest in the model forced the company to drop it from the price list.

It is not just Mercedes-Benz who is facing troubles with selling a top-spec saloon in the segment. BMW, Audi and Jaguar too have struggled to sell models in that price range. However, Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO, Eberhard Kern believes now with the E350 out, there’s a big gap between the current top-spec E250 CDI and the AMG model. This could only indicate that Mercedes has plans to reintroduce the E350 in India.

The E350 will be based around the latest design of the E-Class. The present generation E-Class is amongst the most attractive mid-sized premium sedans available in the market today. The Jaguar XF is the only other car that comes close to rival the looks of the E-Class.

Also, the other variants of the E-Class also have seen renewed interest in recent times with order books filling up faster than the company can replenish the stocks. The new variant of the E-Class could be launched sometime during the festive season with prices starting at just under INR 60 lakh.

Mercedes Benz India recently launched the facelifted E Class here in the Indian market and this is one of the most prestigious car in their lineup. Yes! we did reviewed the Mercedes E class which was launched earlier in 2012 here in India, but this 2013 facelifted version of the Merc E class is totally a new car all by itself. The new 2013 Mercedes E class looks different and has gone through some serious cosmetic changes. Mercedes Benz is trying to give a more young and futuristic appeal to all their cars to compete with the other German rivals such as BMW and Audi and I must admit that they are quite successful in doing so, we have seen that in two of their most recent launches the A and B class.

The new E class comes equipped with a 4-cylinder 2.0-litre 1991cc petrol engine which generates 135KW of maximum power at 5500RPM and 300NM of maximum Torque at 1200-4000RPM. Whereas the Diesel engine is also powered by a 4 cylinder 2143cc engine which generates 150 KW of maximum power at 4200rpm and 500NM of torque at 1600-1800RPM. Both these engines are impressive and will impress you immediately. Now lets find out what else is new in the E class.

Mercedes since the entry of BMW and Audi has been reduced to the fringes. Their market share has dropped and no longer is the manufacturer the obvious choice for those looking for an option in the luxury car market. Mercedes would be launching a facelift version of the E-class in 2014 but until that comes the manufacturer is trying to make up some lost ground to the 5-series and A6. Mercedes has launched another variant of the E-class and the E 220CDI now comes in the Avantgarde variant. With the sedan the manufacturer hopes that it’s providing the customer with added value and more choice. The E 220 CDI is priced at Rs 42.10lakhs ex-showroom Mumbai. Mercedes has also announced that it would now stop manufacturing the E 250 CDI and E 200 CGI models after the current stocks finish. The E350 too will be only manufactured on a made-to-order basis after the festive season.

Audi’s aggressive tactics have put its rivals on the back foot. The manufacturer is bringing out models at a rate faster than both BMW and Mercedes and has set its sight firmly on becoming the largest luxury car maker in the world. The BMW 5-series has been seen testing in Munich and now the 2014 Mercedes E-class too has been spotted testing. This will be the first facelift given to the E-class since its launch in 2010. According to the manufacturer the changes to the sedan will be substantial and reports suggest the car will be shown at the Detroit motor show in January.

Mercedes new S-class and E-class details revealed

The latest generation Mercedes-Benz S-class has been around longer than its competitors and the manufacturer last made changes to it in 2010. The new S-class is expected to come out next year and new details have been revealed about the sedan. We have learnt that Mercedes is set to expand the line up to include five variants in the next two years.

The new S-class is expected to feature new LED integrated headlamps, a wider chrome front grille and the standard saloon will be followed by a long-wheelbase variant. There would also be two super-luxury Pullman versions, stretching to six metres or more in length. Mercedes will also be introducing a new S-class coupe to replace the CL and an S-class cabriolet is on the cards as well. Both are cars would only appear in 2014 and only time will tell whether we would get to see them in India. The production S-class Cabriolet will feature a two-door body with a large fabric hood.

If you’re looking for style and brand recognition and have money to spend, the regular E-class or its competitors won’t rock your boat. A cabriolet is just too impractical for our country and a viable option would be a coupe. Launched in India in 2009, the E-class coupe serves a purpose that the sedan cannot. The E-class coupe combines the fascination and efficiency associated withMercedes and is aimed the young affluent buyer who isn’t shy to be noticed. Priced at Rs 64.5lakh on-road New Delhi, the coupe is 11lakhs more expensive than the sedan and unfortunately is offered in India with only a V6, 3-litre petrol engine. There is not an option of a more powerful petrol or a more efficient diesel which is also the problem with the cabriolet. The Coupe is a CBU (completely build unit) which sure does make it expensive but its competitor Audi A7 is similarly priced and is offered only in a diesel.

The faceliftMercedes E-Class will be launched in India in 2013. The manufacturer will unveil the facelift version at the Detroit Motor Show and the prototype of sedan has been seen in the Arctic region and in Northern Europe last winters. The E-Class has also been spotted at the Mercedes’s R&D centre in Stuttgart.

The manufacturer has made changes to the front and the "four eyes" headlamps will be replaced by a more dynamic single-piece headlight unit with LEDs. The 2013 E-Class will also receive a new pair of air intakes which look more contemporary and there is a revamped, more aerodynamic chrome grille. There aren’t however any major changes made to the rear but there will be restyled LED’s like the GLK. Mercedes has also made changes to the side which makes the E-Class look cleaner and more elegant.

Changes to the interiors include new colour combinations and a new generation COMAND infotainment system which is expected to be more intuitive. The dash is though unlikely to get a major redesign. The interiors will come with new features like Dynamic light assistant which relies on fast moving multi-directional LED pixels, Intelligent lane assistant which monitors the driver’s and supervises oncoming traffic, Intelligent brake assistant which is a radar-based cruise control and Car-to-X-communication that recognises police and ambulance. The E-Class will also have changes to the suspension which would include Magic Ride Control which adjusts the ride according to the road. Mild changes to the engines are also expected.

The W212 E-Class made its debut in 2009 and the 2013 version of the sedan will have a more three-dimensional front grille and a new bumper design. This will be the first facelift to the E-Class since it was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show three years ago.

The new E-Class is expected to look younger and the manufacturer needs to upgrade their sedan with increasing competition fromBMW and Audi which has led to a sharp decline in the market share of Mercedes.

The two type of cars that we think don’t make sense in India are supercars and convertibles. But then these are the two type of cars that you can have the most fun in. Few experiences can beat the feeling of freedom while driving with the roof down and the attention that you get while driving a cabriolet around town is flattering to say the least. The biggest problem with cabriolets in India is the weather but if you have money in your pocket then that shouldn’t be reason enough for you not to consider buying one. After all it is the charm of driving a convertible with the top down that can beat even the possibility of getting a heatstroke. Cabriolets like the Mercedes E350 are rear to see on Indian roads and the exclusivity associated with them makes them ever so desirable. The Mercedes E350 Cabriolet is priced at Rs 64.5lakh ex-showroom Delhi and is the seventh offering within the E-Class range by Mercedes in India.

The ecstasy from the ‘E’ was fizzled out first by the arrival of the BMW 5-Series and then by the Audi A6. No longer was the Mercedes Benz E-Class the quintessential automotive aspiration. While around the world and in India there remain people who want their first luxury car to carry the three pointed star at the bonnet, an increasing number of people have now started to appreciate the superior driving dynamics of a BMW and the better packaged Audi’s. Mercedes was fast losing ground in India as its German rivals found favor amongst more and more buyers. The manufacturer responded to the decline in sales by not wasting time in bringing the new E-Class into the Indian market after its international launch. Before the launch of the E-Class they also started a strong PR campaign to change public perspective that Mercs can’t be fun to drive by introducing the AMG line up in India and then organizing road shows to showcase the potential of the Mercedes Benz cars and the AMG’s. With the 2010 E-Class the manufacturer is attempting to turn a page by trying to make the sedan dynamically closer to the 5-Series (as you will read latter on in the review) while not compromising on luxury which it is famous for. With prices starting from Rs40,72,855 to Rs50,59,058 for the diesel and Rs39,91,684 to Rs49,50,118 for the petrol ex-showroom New Delhi, how good and improved is the new E-Class?
