2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class

The popular luxury compact sedan gets some valuable updates

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the refreshed CLA models for the year 2016 even before its debut in New York. The updated CLA and the CLA Shooting brake models are the fourth and fifth models in the German luxury auto maker’s compact list, the other compact models includes the A, B and the GLA Class. There is no doubt in the fact that the compact models are immensely popular all over the globe and the sales of these compact cars have also reached an amazing 582,531 in 2015 which is almost 25.8% increase over the last year sales figures.

The sporty overall appeal, powerful and dynamic design and sensual rounded contours are some of the design highlights of the new CLA. Now the changes to the facelift model of the CLA are subtle but ask anyone and you will get to know the popularity if this compact sedan which was introduced back in 2013. The CLA was launched to take on its other compact car rivals from Audi and BMW. After staying in the market for 3 years it was time for Mercedes to give it a facelift and that is what they have done exactly.

The changes to the exterior and interior are subtle though and these updates are the same kind of updates that they have given in some other compact cars recently as well including the A Class. EXTERIOR

The overall styling of the CLA has not changed a bit but it has received lots of new equipment. To begin with the facelift car now gets an LED High Performance headlamp as an option. These low beam headlamps use projector technology while the main high beam lamp beam uses LED reflection technology.

The front profile of the sedan also has received new restyled bumpers and also new diamond radiator grille finished in Black which is also found in the updated A-Class as well. Apart from the new headlamps and new front grille and bumper the facelift CLA also has been fitted with newly designed light alloy wheels as well. Towards the rear profile the newlky designed LED taillamps will also surely attract attention as well. These LED taillamps gets the automatic intensity control which actually reduces the dazzling effect for the following car. The taillamps also has three stage direction indication lamp for Day/Night-time driving/Night-time stationary.

For the first time Mercedes-Benz is also offering HANDS-FREE ACCESS option which allow the boot lid of the car to open or shut automatically without any contact, all one needs to do is move the foot in the area of the rear bumper.

INTERIOR

Just like the exterior the interior too received few important and interesting updates of its own which comes in the form of new seat covers and trim parts. The slimmer free standing 8 inch touchcreen also gets a new-style glass cover. For the entertainment of the passengers there is also an optional Audio 20 USB and Audio 20 CD systems. The instrument cluster also received a new red needle which actually makes it easier to read. Immense amount of attention has also been given to the switches in the doors and as well as on the electrically adjustable seats.

The interior also gets different features available with different trims; there is a matt black ash wood finish available with Exclusive package. The exclusive package also gets new leather upholstery options available in sahara beige/black. The CLA also gets coat hook on the grab handle above each rear side window. The optional enhanced Smartphone Integration system allows voice-operated control of iPhones and Android smartphones via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

DRIVETRAIN

Although there are number of drivetrain options available under the hood of the CLA it is available in the Indian market with a single diesel and petrol engine option. The facelift CLA has not received any such major updates when it comes to its drivetrains. Thus expect Mercedes-Benz to continue using the same 2.0 Litre petrol model which is actually capable of producing about 183 Hp of peak power at 5500 rpm and 300 Nm of torque in between 1200-4000 rpm. The engine is paired to a 7G-DCT transmission as standard. If we talk about acceleration the CLA is able to sprint from 0-100 km/h mark 7.8 seconds while it has a top speed of 235 km/h mark.

The diesel drivetrain on the other hand is powered by the 2.1 Litre, inline 4 cylinder unit which is actually capable of producing about 136 Hp of peak power at 3200-4000 rpm and 300 Nm of toque in between 1600-3000 rpm. This diesel drivetrain too is paired to the same 7G-DCT transmission. The diesel engine helps the CLA to acclearte from 0-100 km/h mark 9.8 seconds while it has a top speed of 220 km/h mark.

PRICE

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA is available in three trims.

Trims Prices (ex showroom, Mumbai)
CLA 200 Style diesel 31.40 Lakhs
CLA 200d Sport 34.68 lakhs
CLA 200 Sport Petrol 33.68 Lakhs

COMPETITION

Audi A3

The Audi A3 is the worthy competitor to the CLA. Although the A3 was launched a lot later in the Indian market but that does not actually affected its popularity a bit. The A3 is available in the Indian market with the 1.8 Litre TFSI petrol motor and the 2.0 Litre TDI motor. The 1.8 Litre engine is capable of producing about 177 bhp of peak power at 5100 rpm and 250 Nm of torque in between 1250-5000 rpm while the diesel unit is capable of producing about 150 Hp of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque. While the diesel engine is paired to a 6 speed S-tronic automatic gearbox the petrol engine is paired to a 7 speed dual clutch auto gearbox.

CONCLUSION

The dynamic styling and the sporty looks was definitely the main highlights of the CLA Class. Now with more improved styling and added features on both its exterior as well as interior this has now become an even more attractive package. The new Mercedes-Benz CLA debuted at the New York International Auto Show which commenced from 25th of March and juts like Mercedes Benz has promised it is now launched and readily available in India.

The recently introduced Mercedes-Benz CLA class definitely is a worthy competitor in the compact luxury car segment while the other in line is also from another German luxury car maker Audi and their latest offering the A3.

The CLA was first showcased as a concept at the 2012 Beijing Auto show where it attracted huge attention because of its compact size and shape and offcourse for its youthful exterior styling. Later it was launched Internationally in 2013, the CLA definitely took some time to reach the Indian shores and after the launch of the CLA Mercedes did not take time to introduce the powerful AMG variant as well in the Indian market which actually also happens to be the most affordable car from AMG.

Now we are quite surprised to find out that Mercedes has started testing the facelift variant of the CLA already. What is even more interesting is also the fact that Mercedes-Benz has already started launching the updated cars in India and the first product was the facelift A-Class hatchback launched recently. The facelift CLA-Class which was caught testing recently came wrapped in heavy camouflage. However do not expect huge change on its exterior though. We are trying to provide you the details of this facelift CLA-Class which will most probably break its cover at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March.

Mercedes-Benz Starts Producing the CLA Locally

Mercedes-Benz Starts Producing the CLA Locally

Mercedes-Benz Starts Producing the CLA Locally

Mercedes-Benz has started local production of the CLA sedan at its manufacturing facility in Chakan, near Pune, Maharashtra. With this the CLA has become the seventh Mercedes-Benz car to be locally produced in India. India has also became the second market outside Europe to actually produce the CLA-Class.

As demand for this stunning sedan increased, Mercedes say that they can now reduce the long waiting period. Prices have also fallen somewhere between INR 1 to 2 lakhs depending on the variant. The Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG, however will continue to be imported.

Based on the MFA platform, the CLA is actually their entry level sedan which is powered by two engines: a petrol and a diesel. The petrol unit is a 2.0 litre unit producing about 181 hp and 300 Nm of torque. The diesel on the other hand is a 2.15 litre unit producing 134 hp and 300 Nm of torque. Both the engines are mated to a 7G-DCT 7-speed dual clutch transmission.

The compact sedan competes against the likes of the Audi A3. Thanks to its design, it outsells the Audi even though the Audi is cheaper.

Mercedes-Benz To Locally Assemble CLA Sedan After The GLA Class

Only yesterday we have reported that Mercedes Benz has inaugurated the phase 2 of their production facility in Chakan, Pune which will also help them to increase their production capacity from 10, 000 units to 20, 000 units per year. Along with that Mercedes Benz also announced that they have started local assembly of the GLA-Class in India.

Now according to the recent reports the main reason for Mercedes deciding to produce the GLA locally is because of its high demand and also the reason of the long waiting period that customers had to face. When asked the Mercedes officials they replied they had to pre-pone the local production of the CLA because of the high demand of the car in India and the long waiting periods that the customers faced. Now with the local production started the problem will be solved. When the officials were also asked about their next plans, they replied that the next car which will be produces locally is the compact entry level sedan CLA. Although this was not mentioned when exactly will Mercedes start the local assembly of the CLA but there is a fair chance that the Gerna luxury car manufacturer will start the local assembly of the CLA sedan in the next couple of months.

If the CLA is also produced locally within the next couple of months then just like the GLA the CLA prices too will reduce comparatively by few lakh rupees which will even make the CLA more competitive.
