2015 Mercedes-Benz B-Class

The word ‘Active Tourer’ may not strike your bells as much because we the Indians are not so familiar with the term actually because it is a new term and believe it or not it was Mercedes who actually have founded this segment when they introduced the B-Class late in the year 2011 but later many other auto manufacturers too cashed in the idea and launched their own products and made this segment competitive.

Mercedes Benz who introduced the B-Class not so long ago realized their increasing competition and did not took any chances and introduced the facelift B-Class in the International market already but don’t turn away thinking that it will take some time to reach the Indian shores because with the Mercedes Benz new aggressive marketing strategy for India it won’t take long for the German auto giant to launch the new facelift B-Class in India.

We all are quite aware of the term facelift in automotive industry which actually is to sharpen and add some new and interesting features to make the product updated without messing much with its overall proportion and other features. Mercedes too walked in the same path and given their new B-Class a new lease of life by adding some new features and sharpening some old ones both in the exterior and interior as well to make it a perfect car for those owners who wants a practical, safe and comfortable vehicle for them and their family.

It’s true that the B-Class may not be as good looking as the new A Class which also happens to be the more popular model here in India but that said the B-Class was also one of the first cars which wore the cloak of Mercedes Benz’s new and youthful design philosophy. The B-Class is based on Mercedes MFA front wheel drive compact platform which also supports the less practical but more emotional A-Class.

UPDATE 11.03.15 Mercedes Benz launched the facelift B Class in the Indian market with prices starting at Rs 27.95 lakh for the B180 Sport while the B200 CDI is priced at Rs. 28.95 Lakh

EXTERIOR

"The Mercedes B Class facelift will be available with three new design and equipment lines namely Style, Urban and AMG Line"

It’s true that the new B-Class is not as stylish as any other Mercedes Compact cars like the A or GLA and the CLA Class (If you consider the sedan as a compact car) but blame its segment and purpose and not its design because it has to appear bigger than the standard hatch and more practical than the other mentioned vehicles.

At the front you will find a new bumper which looks little more aggressive than the old car while the major change that you will notice comes in the form of a new headlamps that’s right the facelift B-Class gets integrated with daytime running lamps which actually gives the vehicle more premium appearance. Beside that there has been no such major change in the overall design and body except the different lines and trims, the Mercedes B Class facelift will be available with three new design and equipment lines namely Style, Urban and AMG Line.that are available with the B-Class gets some own individual features. The facelift B-Class also gets LED high performance headlamps in the International market and we cannot tell right now whether it will be available in the Indian market or not, talking about the lamps the tail lamps units at the rear of the B-Class also gets bicolor LED lamps which makes the car more visible during night.

Mercedes hasn’t made any major changes on the exterior of the vehicle to maintain the familiarity.

The new facelift B Class also will be available with three new design and equipment lines namely Style, Urban and AMG Line.

- The Style equipment line will be available with light-alloy wheels in an expressive design, radiator trim with two louvers painted in iridium silver with chrome inserts, and shoulderline trim strips in chrome on its exterior. While the interior upgrades includes Vianen upholstery fabric seats and selected interior elements in silver chrome such as the moulding on the multifunction steering wheel, highlights on the gear lever and lastly the switches placed on the top control panel. It has also been provided with a cup holder on the center console and a 12V socket in the rear round.

- The Urban equipment line gets a radiator trim with two louvres painted in iridium silver and chrome inserts, 43.2 cm (17-inch) 5-spoke light-alloy wheels, and a twin-pipe exhaust system integrated into the bumper with chrome-look tailpipe trim. In its interior the seats has been fitted with a upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/Montfoort fabric. While the multifunction steering wheel also has been wrapped in premium quality leather. The other more specific details includes a contrasting topstitching, silver chrome highlights.

- The AMG Line receives AMG bodystyling which is highlighted further with the radiator trim, two-pipe exhaust system integrated into the bumper with chrome look tailpipe trim, lowered comfort suspension with Sports Direct-Steer system to improve handling, an 18-inch 5-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, perforated brake discs at the front, and brake callipers at the front with the Mercedes Benz lettering. Inside the car you will find man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre and the multifunction sports steering wheel with flattened bottom section for the sporty feel, Red contrasting stitching on the door armrests, centre console, seats, and gear lever while the sports pedals are also finished in stainless steel.

INTERIOR

Offcourse! This is Mercedes-Benz so expect quality materials and a premium interior from B-Class. The facelift car gets more up to date interior along with a bigger (8 inch) and better free standing head display unit, with the help of the bigger screen which also has better resolution and actually provides clearer and better images and much more better control over the vehicles COMMAND system even when the vehicle is on the move than the last one. while the stylish instrument cluster too will attract your attention for sure specially the new dial layout in the instrument cluster.

This time around Mercedes Benz has already provided the owners to choose from 12 colors for the ambient lighting system as an optional extra which can be set according to the mood beside the ambient mood lighting the owners can also choose the Keyless GO which is also available as an optional extra. This function actually allows the owners to open and start the vehicle while simply carrying the electronic key in your pocket. The steering wheel in this facelift B-Class has been borrowed from the C-Class sedan which will also be launched in India soon. Sadly what I have discussed above are available with the International car and most of them won’t even make it to India.

DRIVETRAIN

Mercedes has tried to make the B Class engine more fuel efficient and right now the B Class which is available in the Indian market comes with both diesel and petrol engine options, the 2.1 litre CDI diesel engine does duty under the hood of the diesel variant while the petrol variant is powered by a 1.6 litre motor which offers enough grunt to the B-Class.

In the International market the B-Class actually gets 4 diesel and 4 petrol engines as an option while there is also an electrical drive unit as well as a B-Class which runs entirely on Natural gas. Hopefully Mercedes Benz won’t make any changes in Indian drivetrain and the facelift B Class will also be powered by the same engine that powers the pre-facelft variant.

The B-Class has been built with the purpose of carrying your family so do not expect the engine to perform like the engine you will find in the more sportier products from the same manufacturer however the engine isn’t slow either and is ideal for carrying your whole family in it. Both the engines are coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch 7G-DCT transmission which has 7 seven forward gear and 1 reverse gear. This transmission makes sure that the sporty nature of the vehicle is also maintained while it also takes care of the fuel economy at the same time.

DRIVETRAIN DETAILS

SAFETY FEATURES

The facelift B-Class gets couple of newly added safety features with the vehicle such as Collision prevention Assist (CPA) which was previously available only with the S Class.Unfortunately the Indian variant wont be getting all those but because this is a premium vehicle from a reputed auto manufacturer it does come with plenty of safety features as well.

- Attention Assist
- Adaptive Brakes
- Electronic Stability Programme
- Anti Lock Braking system
- Hill start assist with hold function
- Acceleration Skid control
- Brake Assist
- Tyre Pressure loss Warning system

PRICING

The updated B 180 Sport has been priced at 27.95 lakh while the B 200 CDI has been priced around Rs. 28.95 lakh.

COMPETITION

BMW X1

The BMW X1 is the entry level crossover from the stable of another premium auto manufacturer in India. It is powered by a 1995 cc diesel engine which generates 184 bhp of maximum power at 4000 rpm and 380 Nm of torque at 1,750–2,750 rpm. This car is also known for its luxurious interior and quirky performance.

CONCLUSION

Yes! We agree that the B-Class may not be as good looking as the A or the GLA but it is definitely is a more practical alternative to the smaller A Class and sits in between the A and the GLA which will even help those who does not want to extend their budget much but also wants to stick to this brand. With its impressive interior space a practical boot and all the comfort that you would generally expect out of a premium Tourer the B Class has it all. Although Mercedes has not exactly made a huge difference to the facelift B Class but surely the changes in the exterior has made the vehicle more attractive as well as elegant at the same time while the interior changes has upped the premium quality interior further. The facelift B-Class will certainly draw attention of those who wants a premium and practical vehicle for their family.

Press Release

Stuttgart. In terms of both design and technology, the second generation of the B-Class car has heralded a new compact class era at Mercedes-Benz. More than 350,000 of the sports tourer have been sold since the market launch in late 2011. Now the best-seller from Mercedes-Benz has undergone a major facelift including exterior and interior enhancements along with attractive, redefined design and equipment lines.
The breadth of choice is unique in this segment: five economical diesel models with consumption statistics ranging from 3.6 to 5.0 l/100 km, four efficient petrol engines at between 5.4 and 6.6 l/100 km, alternative drive systems (B 200 Natural Gas Drive and B-Class Electric Drive), as well as optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive. What is more, with a Cd value of less than 0.25 the sports tourer continues to be the role model for its class. Sales of the new B-Class commence on 12 September, with the world première taking place during the Paris Motor Show (4 to 19 October). The revamped models will be making their way to dealerships from 29 November 2014. Prices start from 27,102.25 euros for the B 180.

"As the first member of a completely new generation of compact class, for us the B-Class paved the way for great success in this vehicle segment. The pioneer is now in better shape than ever," says Ola Källenius, Member of the Divisional Board Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Marketing & Sales. "The B-Class is the perfect (family) car for anyone who attaches importance to practicality, comfort and safety, but at the same time doesn’t want to miss out on sportiness or driving dynamics."

More light: LED High Performance headlamps now available

The easiest way to recognise a facelifted B-Class with a petrol or diesel engine is from the front: a new bumper, wide radiator trim with two louvres and now integral daytime running lamps in the headlamps give the vehicle a more organic and dynamic appearance. The rear bumper has also been modified and now features a contoured covering and an additional chrome trim strip. LED High Performance headlamps create a more striking look, both day and night (optional extra, not available for the B-Class Electric Drive or Natural Gas Drive). These increase safety at night due to their wide beam pattern and light of a colour similar to daylight. Bicolour tail lamps featuring LED technology provide emphasis and make the vehicle more visible.
A high-grade, functional interior underscores the B-Class’s premium quality claim. The facelift gives the vehicle a more exclusive, up-to-date feel and boosts the scope for individualisation. Mercedes-Benz has enhanced a number of high-quality details in the B-Class such as the large, free-standing head unit display, which is now larger, with a diagonal of up to 20.3 cm (8 inches), and the stylish dial layout for the instrument cluster. There is a choice of 12 colours for the ambient lighting, allowing different moods to be created.

Mercedes-Benz has also revised the model range and aligned the logic to the other compact models. There are three new design and equipment lines: Style, Urban and AMG Line. Each features a number of distinctive exterior and interior details. The Night, Exclusive and AMG Exclusive packages build on these and provide more options for individualisation.

KEYLESS-GO is new as an optional extra. This access and drive authorisation system with KEYLESS-GO starting function allows the vehicle to be opened, started and locked simply by carrying the electronic key with you.

Safety: autonomous partial braking if the risk of a collision is detected

When it made its début, the B-Class redefined the standard of safety in the compact class with a variety of new driving assistance systems, some of them included as standard equipment. These functions have now been enhanced and new assistance systems added to give the driver more support. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS extends the functionality of COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with autonomous partial braking to reduce the risk of rear-end collisions. The standard ATTENTION ASSIST feature has also been upgraded: operating within an extended speed range (60 - 200 km/h), this now uses a five-stage bar display to visualise the driver’s current attention level.

"Mercedes connect me" links the B-Class to its environment

Next-generation telematics offer more intuitive operation; functions are more accessible due to animated menus and visual representations on a larger display in the head unit.

"Mercedes connect me" links the B-Class to its environment. Basic Mercedes connect me services can be used with the standard communications module.
The available services include, among others, accident recovery, as well as service maintenance and incident management. In an accident, the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system automatically connects the occupants with the Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call Centre and sends the position and condition of the vehicle to the rescue operations centre. A rescue vehicle can then be dispatched immediately. The system works automatically but can also be triggered manually.
The special Remote Online equipment enables customers to connect with their vehicle anywhere and at any time via the URL "connect.mercedes.me" and to query by smartphone the fill level of their fuel tank, for example.

Mercedes connect me services are even more extensive for the B-Class Electric Drive: Via "connect.mercedes.me". The current charging level of the lithium-ion battery and current vehicle range can be queried comfortably from a distance. The range of Mercedes connect me services is rounded off by the ability (depending on the temperature) to preheat or precool the vehicle ready for a specified departure time.
COMAND Online customers are also able to receive real-time traffic information courtesy of Live Traffic Information.

A wide spectrum: petrol and diesel engines, all-wheel drive and alternative drive systems

In terms of efficiency, the new B-Class continues to set benchmarks with the best Cd value in its segment. The choice of efficient engines is extensive – four diesel engines, four petrol engines and two models with alternative drive systems. Also available are the B 180 and B 180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Editions.
Thanks to the new B 200 CDI 4MATIC, the pleasure of all-wheel drive and safety now start at around 130 g CO2/km instead of over 150 g CO2/km (B 220 4MATIC) as previously. In total there are now four models with all-wheel drive for improved traction, high driving stability and safe handling.

The B 200 Natural Gas Drive and the B-Class Electric Drive coming soon (sales release: 3 November) join the portfolio as two models with alternative drive systems. Both use the B-Class’s modular ENERGY SPACE body concept: The underbody houses one large and two smaller gas tanks and a 14-litre petrol tank (B 200 Natural Gas Drive) or the lithium-ion battery (B-Class Electric Drive). Due to this intelligent packaging method, the five-seater model has been able to retain the generously proportioned luggage compartment for which it is known.

The model range: new product logic with three lines

As part of the facelift, Mercedes-Benz has revised the B-Class’s model range and brought the model breakdown into line with the other compact models. There are three new design and equipment lines: Style, Urban and AMG Line. Each features plenty of distinctive exterior and interior details. The Night, Exclusive and AMG Exclusive packages build on these and provide more options for individualisation. New
KEYLESS-GO functions simplify operation.

The Style equipment line underlines the B-Class’s stylish appearance. Exterior characteristics include light-alloy wheels in an expressive design, radiator trim with two louvres painted in iridium silver with chrome inserts, and shoulderline trim strips in chrome. For the stylish interior there are seats with Vianen upholstery fabric, trim with a line pattern, and selected elements in silver chrome such as the moulding on the multifunction steering wheel, highlights on the gear lever, and the switches on the top control panel. Useful details like a double cup holder on the centre console and a 12V socket in the rear round off the high-quality feel.

The Urban equipment line emphasises the vehicle’s sportiness both inside and out. The radiator trim with two louvres painted in iridium silver and chrome inserts, 43.2 cm (17-inch) 5-spoke light-alloy wheels, and a twin-pipe exhaust system integrated into the bumper with chrome-look tailpipe trim create a dynamic impression. In the interior the sporty character is on display with seats featuring upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/Montfoort fabric and a leather multifunction steering wheel with perforated grip area. Details like contrasting topstitching, silver chrome highlights and sail pattern trim round off the high-quality feel.

The AMG Line augments the vehicle’s sportiness and exclusivity. Powerful AMG bodystyling ensures a dynamic appearance along with the radiator trim, which has two louvres painted in iridium silver and chrome inserts, and the two-pipe exhaust system integrated into the bumper with chrome look tailpipe trim. A lowered comfort suspension with Sports Direct-Steer system improves handling and boosts driving enjoyment. 45.7 cm (18-inch) 5-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, perforated brake discs at the front, and brake callipers at the front with Mercedes-Benz lettering complete the striking exterior. Seats in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre and the multifunction sports steering wheel with flattened bottom section, as well as a gear lever with perforated leather, add stylishly sporty elements in the interior. This equipment line also includes red contrasting topstitching on the door armrests, centre console, seats, and gear lever. Brushed stainless steel sports pedals with rubber studs are another highlight.

The Night package allows the exterior to be individualised further. It includes selected design elements in black. The radiator trim sports two high-gloss black louvres and chrome inserts. The 45.7 cm (18-inch) high-sheen light-alloy wheels, exterior mirror housing, and shoulderline trim strips also come in black. Dark-tinted glass from the B-pillar to the rear protects against prying eyes and simultaneously emphasises the sporty character.

Comfort, quality, and design are hallmarks of the Exclusive package. Highlights include heated front seats with 4-way lumbar support that, like the multifunction steering wheel and gear lever, are covered with high-quality leather. The instrument panel and door centre panel are trimmed with matching ARTICO man-made leather. Leather seats are available in the following expressive colours: cranberry red, hazelnut brown and black. Silver chrome design elements also help to create an exclusive ambience. Among the many other practical details are infrared convenience closing and a 12V socket in the rear.

Building on the AMG Line, the AMG Exclusive package offers even more exclusivity, individuality and sportiness. Features include heated seats with 4-way lumbar support where black RED CUT leather upholstery with red contrasting topstitching creates striking highlights. To match them, the instrument panel and door centre panels, as well as the armrests in the doors, are trimmed with ARTICO man-made leather and have red contrasting topstitching. The leather multifunction sports steering wheel with flattened bottom section and perforated grip area and the leather gearshift lever emphasise the sporty character.

Mercedes Benz small cars are in demand here in India

Gone are the days when a person sitting in a Mercedes Benz would usually be a businessman or a wealthy pensioner. Mercedes’ entry level range in India consists of the A-Class and B-Class. Both of these cars have been recently introduced in the market with prices starting at just over INR 20 lakh.

For a hatchback, that is a lot. But, this is the segment that has brought new customers to the brand. With changing times and the introduction of new, attractive cars even younger buyers are looking at Mercedes-Benz as an option, this according to Mercedes-Benz themselves.

The first quarter of 2014 was the best in terms of sales for the German brand. Out of the 2,554 units sold during this time, 510 units of A-Class and B-Class combined were dispatched to their owners. Now, that’s 20 percent of the total number of cars sold during the period.

This shows how important the entry-level premium segment has become for the company. It not only has brought new customers to the brand, but also in substantial numbers.

At present, both the A-Class and B-Class are imported as CBUs. With demand for the models rising, Mercedes could be looking at shifting to local assembly soon. The company is already in the process of doubling their plant capacity which could be used to assembly premium hatchbacks in the near future.

Mercedes B-Class getting ready for a facelift

Until recently, Mercedes Benz has updated most of the models in their global portfolio. Starting with the new A Class, Mercedes went on an upgrade spree, adding new, redesigned models to their line-up on a regular basis. After the S Class, C Class, GL Class, along with the V Class, there’s one more model that is yet to get a facelift.

The B Class hatchback is a much larger family car than the A Class. In India, Mercedes-Benz launched the B Class in 2012 followed by the new A Class. Now, the Paris Motor show in October will play host to the new B Class MPV. That said; don’t expect a drastic change in design as this will be a minor facelift.

The new B Class will feature a redesigned headlamp cluster and front bumper. The grille is expected to be more upright with a bolder look as seen on the A Class. Behind, the tail lamps will be new and so will be the rear bumper and exhaust tips.

Apart from the above mentioned tweaks, the engines available on the car will remain the same. The India-spec B 180 Sport will be powered by the same 1.6-liter petrol engine with 90 horsepower and 200 Nm. The diesel version come in the form of B 180 CDI and is powered by a 2.2-liter diesel with 80 horsepower on tap and 250 Nm of torque. Both variants take more than 10 seconds to reach the 100 kph mark and their top speed is 190 kph.

One of the first cars to follow Merc’s new design language, the B-Class is all due for an update, after its arrival in 2012. Judging by the spy shots we have, the Germans are hard at work in bringing that update.

From the spyshots, we can tell that the update isn’t a huge one. Merc’s managed to cover up the areas that are slated to be updated. Like for example, the covered front fascia suggests that it’s going to receive an overhaul, the rear will receive a slight nip and tuck. These small updates help keep it look young for the years to come.

Mercedes will likely retain the engine lineup for the 2014 B-Class. They will however do a slight rework to the powertrain for more fuel efficiency and lesser carbon emissions.

We’ll keep you posted on the new B-Class.

Soaring Demand For Merc's new A-Class and B-Class

Looks like the 3-pointed Star’s "little" gamble has finally paid off as recent reports suggest the the demand for the new A-Class and B-Class are going up, with customers waiting an average of 2 months for their car. Who would’ve thought?

Since these two models are imported through CBU route, with this soaring demand, Mercedes-Benz India has requested the Stuttgart HQ to prioritize and allocate more stock to the Indian market.

How good is the demand, you ask? Mercedes hasn’t disclosed any exact figures but we do know that they’ve managed to snag 400 bookings of the A-Class, 10 days prior to its launch

"When we launched the A Class there were doubts if India was ready for such compact luxury cars. Going by our experience, we can say India is ready. Today one out of every four Mercedes-Benz cars sold in India is a compact car." said a happy Mr Eberhard Kern, MD & CEO of M-B India.

Even we had such doubts, but given the fact that the Germans have engineered an amazing product that stays true to their core values in a compact nutshell, the two models were destined for fame.

This German brand needs no introduction and they have just launched the most compact, cheapest sports tourer in the Indian market in the year 2012. I am talking about the Mercedes Benz B class here, those who were expecting something big and tall will be little surprised to see this luxury hatchback from Mercedes. The B class has the characteristics of both the MPV and hatchback in it. The car looks quite sporty and funky and has plenty of interior space too. Mercedes are trying to target the young Indian buyers with their new product. This new Mercedes B class promises refinement and luxury combined with sporty, dynamic characteristics.

The B class has a Front, transverse 4 cyls in-line, 1595cc petrol engine under its hood which generates about 122 Hp of power at 5000 RPM and 200 NM of torque at 1250-4000 RPM. The car has pretty decent acceleration too; it reaches 0-100 in just 10.2 seconds and has a top speed of 190 km. The new B class looks promising, let’s find out some more details about this luxury hatchback from Mercedes.

Mercedes’ obsession with filling gaps in the car classes continues, a recent example of that being the R-class SUV/estate. The B-class mini MPV/Sport tourer being another such example. The B-class is a car which is new to India and the current plan is to assemble the Sports tourer in India with sales starting from the second half of the year. The new B replaces both the B and A-class and is expected to be priced around Rs 19lakh and will incorporate many features and comforts of larger cars. Merc’s first small front-wheel drive cars were a disappointment and the B-class which appeared in 2005, failed to live up to Mercedes’ premium brand values. The new B-class however is a complete departure from the model it replaces and unlike the previous generation B which had a double-floor construction, a high seating position and a four-cylinder engine at 59 degrees, the new B is more conventional. The B that will go on sale will feature a low, single-floored and transverse-engine like other front-wheel drive designs.
