Mercedes Benz is certainly the most popular luxury automotive around the world. In India the German automaker has taken an aggressive expansion strategy to grab the large potential market. The A-Class from the company’s lineup is the entry level model, which is specially built for those who are seeking their first taste of luxury cars. This model has been built to attract the young customers precisely.

Mercedes Benz introduced the first generation A-Class in 1997, which couldn’t garner much attraction. Later, when the second generation model came in 2004, the car grabbed eyeballs. Last year in 2015 the German luxury automobile brand introduced the third generation of the A-Class to the Indian market. Now the fourth generation of the Mercedes Benz A-Class has been spotted testing somewhere in Europe, which would reach Indian shores sometime around 2018. In India the car will attract the young customers, who look forward to get the first taste of luxury automobiles.

The third generation A-Class launched in India sports a very much urban and stylish guise. The styling has been done keeping the urban customers need in mind, while the interior offers the delicate touch of premium luxury features and comfort. Being a hatchback this car offers compactness which is very much convenient in Indian congested city roads. Moreover the global styling is very much appealing to the customers. The test mule of the 2018 Mercedes Benz A-Class which was spotted testing in Europe was completely camouflaged leaving a little bit of space to guess the design of the upcoming luxury hatchback. The front fascia might get new set of headlamp clusters which would get LED headlamps along with the LED daytime running lights. The front radiator grille and the bumper would be revised to become more aggressive. Expect the front hood to get some muscular crease running down to the nose section.

At the side profile the A-Class will receive black capped wing mirrors with side turning indicators. The door handles will come completely black painted. Expect the new A-Class to come sporting some sharp creases running through the side profile. The wheels adorn new design, making the car sportier and appealing. So far, the new Mercedes Benz A-Class looks sharper from every angle compare to old models’ roundish appearance.

The rear profile will also get a revised attempt with the LED taillamps and the revamped rear bumper. Compare to the outgoing model’s roundish rear fascia the new model will come with sharper appearance thanks to the roof spoiler, shark fin antenna. The dimension would remain similar to the outgoing model.

The competitors against the Mercedes Benz A-Class are BMW 1 Series, Volvo V40 and Audi A1. The Audi A1 looks compact and stylish with sharper appearance. The hatchback looks a bit like a micro SUV with its shorter but bit taller posture. The BMW 1 Series looks way much muscular, but aesthetically not so glamorous compare to the A-Class. On the other hand the Volvo V40 comes very stylish and with an elongated appearance. The car is sharp and sleekly designed.


The interior of the next generation A-Class comes with loads of features giving the owner the experience of the luxury automobiles. The interior of the Mercedes A-Class features multifunction steering wheel, dual pod instrument cluster which also gets a TFT display. The centre console sports a mounted touchscreen infotainment display along with round AC vents at the dashboard. The dashboard comes wrapped in plush leather. Expect all of this to continue in the next generation model of A-Class as well, in a bit revised way albeit. The touchscreen infotainment system might come updated. It would sport some additional technologies like semi automatic driving technology, which can be guessed from the sensors placed at the windscreen at the test mule. The car will also come with adaptive cruise control.

Among the competitors, the Audi A1 comes with a signature Audi cabin, which features multifunction steering wheel, dual analog and a TFT display at the instrument cluster, mounted display, which is available inside the cabin of the BMW 1 series as well. The Volvo V40 on the other hand comes featuring a very stylish interior, which is somehow more appealing than the other models in the fray. The instrument cluster sports a single round dial at the middle and wide display, the infotainment system is positioned above the range of control buttons. The upholstery and the seat materials are plush luxurious.


The Mercedes Benz A-Class is available in both the petrol and diesel engine options. The next generation A-Class would continue to be powered by the same range of engines. In that case the A-Class gets power from a 1.6 litre inline four cylinder petrol engine under the hood which is capable to churn out 122 hp of peak power at 5000 rpm and 200 Nm of peak torque between 1250 rpm to 4000 rpm. It can accelerate 0 – 100 kmph in 8.1 seconds while the top speed for the car is 190 kmph. The diesel variant on the other hand draws power from a 2.2 litre in line four cylinder engine which generates 136 hp of peak power between 3400 rpm to 4400 rpm and 300 Nm of peak torque between 1400 rpm to 3000 rpm. The diesel variant A-Class can reach 0 – 100 kmph in 9.3 seconds with a top speed of 210 kmph. In the next generation model the range topping A45 AMG would get a re-tuned engine which will be able to churn out over 400 hp of peak power.

The Audi A1 is available in different range of powertrains. The entry level petrol variant gets power from a 1.2 litre TFSI engine churning out 83 hp of peak power. The larger petrol engine is a 1.4 litre TFSI unit which is mated to a dual clutch seven speed S-Tronic gearbox and generates 118 hp of peak power and it can accelerate 0 – 100 kmph in 9.2 seconds with top speed of 200 kmph. The diesel variant of Audi A1 is powered by a 1.6 litre turbodiesel engine which comes in two different tunes, with one producing 102 hp of peak power and 87 hp of peak power. The diesel variants can reach 0 – 100 kmph in 10.5 seconds.

The BMW 1 Series being a pretty popular model sports range of powertrains which include both petrol and diesel engines. The 2016 BMW 1 Series facelift comes with a single diesel engine although, which is a 2.0 litre four cylinder twin turbocharged unit paired with an eight speed Steptronic automatic gearbox and it generates 150 hp of peak power at 4000 rpm and 320 Nm of peak torque between 1500 rpm and 3000 rpm. It is capable to reach 0 – 100 kmph in 8.3 seconds with a top speed of 112 kmph. The fuel economy for this car is 23.26 kmpl.

The 2017 Volvo V40 will come powered by range of powertrains, including 2 petrol engines and 2 diesel engine options, The 2.0 litre D4 diesel engine produces 190 hp of peak power at 4250 rpm and 400 Nm of peak torque between 1750 rpm to 2500 rpm. The transmission duty will be done by an automatic gearbox. The other diesel engine is a 2.0 litre D3 engine mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission, which kicks out 150 hp of peak power at 5000 rpm and 350 Nm of peak torque between 1500 rpm to 2700 rpm.


The Mercedes Benz A-Class Facelift was launched last year with a price tag of INR. 24.95 lakh (ex showroom, Mumbai) for the A180 Sport petrol version, while the A200 Sport variant which is driven by diesel engine was priced at INR. 25.95 lakh (ex showroom, Mumbai). Expect the new model to come pricier than the outgoing model.

The Audi A1 in India would be priced around INR. 19 lakh. The BMW 1 Series 118d Sportline variant is priced at INR. 29.90 lakh (ex showroom, Thane). The Volvo V40 Kinetic variant is priced at around INR. 24.75 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi) and the Volvo V40 R-Design is priced at INR. 27.7 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi).
