2017 Mercedes-Benz Concept A Sedan
A Concept car which could open lots of opportunities for Mercedes in the compact car segment
Mercedes-Benz did showcase quite a few exciting products at the 2017 Shanghai Auto show but what attracted the most number of attentions is the concept that they showcased alongside their regular lineup. Called the Concept A Sedan, with this Concept Mercedes-Benz is providing an outlook of the next generation of compact vehicles and a potential, new body type.
To make it simple, this is the new concept which most probably will later be converted into the production variant of the A-Class sedan which will be sold alongside the A-Class hatchback. This compact car will compete directly with the likes of the Audi A3 sedan and the soon to be introduced BMW 1-Series sedan. Now there is a fair chance of the Concept A-sedan may soon turn into reality because the compact luxury car market has flourished a lot in the past couple of years. Some of the entry level Mercedes products like the A and B and even the GLA-Class was able to attract a lot of buyers. While its two major rivals have already entered the segment Mercedes, haven’t readied any product yet.

Just like the CLA the Concept A sedan looks quite futuristic and aggressive at the same time. Some of the reports state that this future car will most probably underpin a new FWD platform which is currently under development this new platform will supposedly underpin a total of 8 new models in their lineup.
Now coming back to the styling it is quite clear that the front bumper and headlamps take its inspirations from the Mercedes AMG GT Sports car. The headlights look sharp while the grille looks aggressive we sincerely hope that Mercedes carries over this styling to the production variant as well. The big wheels towards the side profile make the Concept looks sporty however we do believe that the production variant will look slightly less aggressive with smaller wheels and fewer character lines.
Walk towards the rear profile and everything looks proportionately and not too tacky. The rear bumper gets a styled diffuser setup while the wraparound LED taillamps narrows towards the number plate area. There are plenty of noticeable curves on the exterior which actually makes the car look too aggressive.
This car will be positioned below the CLA and will be Mercedes entry level sedan offering, and thus it will be slightly shorter in length than the former sedan regarding overall dimensions.
The interior of the existing A-Clas hatchback is shown here
The interior of the concept was not revealed at the show but you can expect the production variant of the Concept A sedan to get the same interiors taken from the current generation A-Class or the upcoming new generation A-Class hatchback which is not revealed yet. However, we sincerely hope that the A-Class sedan will provide more leg room at the rear compared to the hatchback.
There are no words from Mercedes-Benz about the powertrain which will drive this future product, but we can assume as of now that it will get the same gasoline and diesel engines which power the standard A-Class hatchback. Some reports also stated that Mercedes is also looking to work on a hybrid or an electric powertrain for the A-Class which we assume will also be used to power the production variant of the Concept A sedan. The engine will be paired to an automatic transmission which will send power to the front wheels only.
EXPECTED PRICING AND INDIA LAUNCH DATE
The A sedan is still in its concept form and thus depicting its pricing will be too early, however, we can assure that this will be priced slightly higher than the A-Class hatchback but will be lower than the CLA sedan.
There is a fair chance of its being launched in the Indian market because Mercedes does not still have any entry level offering in the compact sedan segment. The production variant of this concept will take atleast 3 more years to launch in India.
The Concept A sedan surely gives us a preview of what the future compact cars from Mercedes will be like. Like we already mentioned earlier the compact car segment is flourishing and fast and Mercedes is planning to make a huge impact in this segment with some upcoming products as well as some updates ones. We would like to see this car enters production line soon.
We will definitely update you with rest of the details as soon as they are available.
