2016 Mercedes-Benz A-Class
The first generation A-Class was definitely not successful when it was introduced back in the year 1997, so Mercedes had to go back to their drawing board and redesign a new car from scratch. The result was the second generation A-Class introduced back in 2004 which was loaded with plenty of safety features and also new engines under its hood but it still was a semi hit amongst the crowd. Thus in order to make their entry level compact offering work Mercedes introduced the third generation model in 2012 and it was based on the concept A-Class which was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Auto show.
The new generation compact hatchback was way ahead of its predecessors in terms of styling and comfort factor. The luxury hatchback was also larger than its predecessors which naturally resulted in more interior room as well. This hatchback as you all know is a direct competitor to the BMW 1 Series, Volvo V40 and also the Audi A3 hatchback (not available in the Indian market).
It has not been long that the German premium auto manufacturer has introduced the A-Class in our market but now we already have some good news for the Merc fans, recently they have taken the covers of the new A-Class which actually is a mid cycle refresh and comes with many new and exclusive features.
What defines the new A-Class from the rest of the competition is its youthful styling complemented by dynamic lines, coupe like windows and offcourse! Some of the inputs taken directly from the concept model showcased back at 2012 Geneva Auto show. The car is still based on the same platform which also supports the B, GLA, and the CLA Class. Available with plenty of engine options and in front wheel drive layout the new model surely gets some new features while the engines are carried over from the previous car with minor improvements.
As of now the Mercedes-Benz A-Class is available with two engine options for India and we have provided you all the information about the changes that you will notice in the existing engines too.

the new A-Class is recognized by its youthful styling and dynamic lines
As already mentioned above that the new A-Class is recognized by its youthful styling and dynamic lines and the coupe style windows but for those who thought that the facelift A Class will bring some major changes will definitely be disappointed. The facelift premium hatch has not recieved any major changes when it comes to its exterior but certainly the subtle changes made to the updated A-Class surely corrected its overall styling flaws.
Towards the front the arrow shaped front bumper takes its inspiration from the concept A-Class while there are no such noticeable changes made to the diamond grille towards the front however we do feel that the grille looks slightly more inclined while the single slat is still present and looks well proportioned and aggressive along with the three star brand logo in the middle. The headlamps too received some mild updates which can be seen in the form of the LED strip lamps towards the upper half of the headlamps (the A45 AMG variant gets LED headlamps as standard while it is available as an optional extra with the other variants.
The side profile of the new facelift A-Class looks unchanged though but Mercedes does offer new set of alloy wheels with the hatchback. Towards the rear nothing much has changed but because this is a facelift so Merc updated the rear bumper while the integrated now more aggressive looking exhaust tip looks good and gives the hatch a powerful presence.
If you ask me surely the 2016, Mercedes A-Class has changed and it now looks even sportier with the addition of small new elements while maintaining the overall proportions as well. Mercerdes even introduced a new and special "Motorsport Edition" model to appeal to the racing fans. It gets areas of its front and rear bumper painted in petrol green while the same color is also used in the rim flanges of the AMG light- alloy wheels.
Just like the exterior do not expect any huge changes to the interior either but the instrument cluster with its tubular design completed with high quality graphic dials appears sporty and helps maintain the overall sporty appeal inside also. Now this is a Mercedes product so expect the best quality switches and accessories inside, take the galvanized switches for example or the large free standing display on top of the dashboard. This display now gets a bigger 8 inch screen available on request only. The rest of the interior definitely gets some new trims and materials and also new finishes for the dashboard to keep things fresh.
The rest of the interior including the space and everything else remains unchanged but this changes surely helps keep things fresh and new for the next 2 years or so.
The new A Class facelift is available with 12 trims and 4 engine options but it is available in India with a single diesel and petrol engine option which comes in the form of A180 and A 200 CDI. Mercedes has made some changes to the lineup and now the entry level model for the A Class is the A160 which produces about 75 KW of peak power while the most fuel efficiency variant is the A 180 d BlueEFFICIENCY Edition which promises to cover 100 kilmetres with just 3.5 Litre of fuel.
Below provided are engine options and variants which are available right now in the Indian market and the changes that are made to the engines.
|Number of cylinders/arrangement||In LIne 4||In Line 4|
|Rated output (kW/hp at rpm)||100/136 at 3200-4000 at 3400-4400||90/122 at 5000|
|Rated torque||300 at 1400-3000||200 at 1250-4000|
|Acceleration 0-100 km/h (s)||9,3||8.1|
|Top speed (km/h)||210||190|
As you can notice the new updated diesel engine now produces 50 NM of more torque while the power output has also increased by 20 KW. As far as the petrol engine is concerned it almost remians unchanged. The accleartion has also improved because of the extra power and now the diesel engine can sprint from 0-100 km/h mark in 9.3 seconds instead of 10. While the acclartion of petrol engine too improved from by almost 11 seconds.
The facelift A-Class has been priced at INR 24.95 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) for the A180 Sport (petrol) version and INR 25.95 lakh(ex-showroom Mumbai) for the A200 (diesel) Sport variant.
The facelift A-Class has been fitted with plenty of safety features which includes 6 airbags, ESP, ASR (Acceleration Skid Control), ABS, Brake Assist System, Attention Assist, Hill Start Assist and Adaptive Brake Lights for the safety of the passenger inside which definitely makes this entry level offering from the premium German Auto manufacturer one of the safest small car available on the Indian road today.
The BMW 1 Series too has received a facelift and the changes that you notice in the hatchback are noticeable especially towards the front profile where it gets most of the changes. Under the hood too there are number of changes the new 1 Series it will be powered by a number of smaller 3 and 4 cylinder diesel and petrol engines. Now the engines which will make it to the Indian market has not been declared yet so we to wait for few more days to get the details.
Volvo launched the V40 hatchback in India this june and the hatchback is available in the Indian market with both diesel and petrol variant. This hatchback surely does not look as stylish as the A-Class but it surely packs quite a punch from its 2.0 Litre, In-line 5 cylinders, Turbodiesel unit.
The third generation A-Class surely has worked for Mercedes after the first and second generation failed to bring in the numbers for the premium auto manufacturer. It is popular in India and also all the other International markets where it is available.
The A-Class popularity lies in its futuristic styling while the interior too comes loaded with plenty of features and impressive quality materials it surely is not way too spacious which is kind of a letdown for the hatch. However when it comes to performance surely the A-Class is not a letdown it comes with plenty of engine options and power which promises superior performance as well as an impressive fuel efficiency figures.
We are pretty sure that the new facelift A-Class will help carry forward the legacy of the entry level hatch forward.

Contours, surface finishes and materials combine to create a harmonious whole, which delights both the eye and the sense of touch. 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission (7G-DCT)
The dual clutch transmission combines the comfort of a 7-speed automatic transmission with the driving dynamics of a manual transmission. When changing gear with manual transmissions, the tractive power driving the vehicle is interrupted. In contrast, the 7G-DCT consists of two sub-transmissions, one of which transfers the tractive power to the wheels while the other is preselecting the next gear. This leads to fast, smooth gear changing without any interruptions in tractive power and results in improved acceleration.
Uncompromised safety and assistance features:
With numerous safety features and driving assistance systems, the new A-Class provides the driver comprehensive support and protection. The assistance systems, which fuse data from various sensor technologies as part of the ’Intelligent Drive’ concept, significantly enhance safety and comfort.
