Mercedes-Benz has launched their much-awaited flagship sports Coupe and drop top Roadster in India. The GT-R happens to be the road legal version of their award-winning GT3 race car also made quite a name for it by winning the Nürburgring 24-hour-race. The GT-R recently also broke all hell loose when it set a new record of fastest ever lap time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the car was able to lap around the green hell in just 7:10.9 minutes thus earning the tag of being the fastest road going sports car ever tested. The car even won hearts here in India even before its launch by setting a new lap record around the Buddh International Circuit in just 2min 9.8sec.
The flagship Mercedes-AMG GT-R priced at INR. 2.23 crore ex-showroom while the Roadster variant has a sticker price of INR 1.19 crore (ex-showroom, India).
Compared to the AMG GT the AMG GT-R gets an active rear axle steering, intelligent lightweight construction and an active aerodynamic section in the underbody.
The GT-R which is also known as the “beast of green hell” gets a 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged, V8 petrol motor which is capable of producing about 585 hp of peak power at 6250 rpm and 700 Nm of torque in between 1900 -5500 rpm. The engine paired to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission which is also available with the standard AMG GT. The engine coupled to a powerful engine helps the car to sprint from 0-100 km/h mark in just 3.6 seconds while the car is capable of reaching a top speed of 318 Km/h mark.
Now coming to some other highlights of the AMG GT-R, the car gets entirely new Panamericana grille towards the front, carbon fibre roof, and an exclusive lightweight AMG Performance 10-twin-spoke forged wheels. The other electronic aids which contribute towards the impressive performance of this sports car includes AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension, Performance exhaust system with titanium elements, AMG Performance steering wheel in black DINAMICA microfiber with top-stitching, AMG electronic rear-axle limited-slip differential.
AMG GT Roadster
The drop-top Roadster, on the other hand, gets the same Panamericana grille towards the front, AMG Exterior Chrome Package, AMG Performance steering wheel in black DINAMICA microfiber with top-stitching which is also available with the other variant, AIrscarf, Draught stop, RIDE CONTROL sports suspension as standard.
Powering the Roadster is the same 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine but it produces slightly lesser power compared to the AMG GT-R, the Roadster variant is capable of producing about 476 hp of peak power at 6000 rpm and 630 Nm of peak torque in between 1700-5000 rpm. The Roadster is capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h mark in 4.0 seconds making it slightly slower than the AMG GT-R. The Roadster variant is reaching a top speed of 302 km/h mark.
To make things more interesting, Mercedes offers a host of customisation and personalisation options for both the cars under their designo platform which was launched by Mercedes about two years ago. The ‘Designo’ offers a host of individualisation options to choose from including exclusive paint finishes, handsewn leather upholstery, trims made from fine wood or lustrous natural stone.
The fastest car of the Mercedes lineup is positioned above the AMG GT-S and will be sold in the Indian market via the CBU route.
