The trend of premium hatchback is once again back in the Indian market and this segment is positioned just above the standard hatchback segment. Recently we have seen some new entrants which includes the recently introduced Honda Jazz, Fiat Punto Evo, Volkswagen Polo and the top contender the Hyundai Elite i20 hatchback. Maruti although has their Swift hatchback which is one capable and popular offering, but honestly it falls short when compared to its competitors in many fields.
Now Maruti does not really want to remain invisible from this segment which looks promising and has got lot of potential. When Suzuki decided to showcase the iK-2 concept during the 2015, Geneva Motor Show, we knew something is coming from Maruti and soon
The iK-2 concept surely looked practical enough unlike other concepts and almost production ready. Now according to the recent reports it was already spotted couple of times being tested both on the European and Indian roads as well.
This hatchback definitely promises to be a premium offering from Maruti Suzuki and will be slightly bigger than the their existing and ageing Swift hatchback. The bigger dimension has also resulted in an increased interior room as well, and just because this will be a premium offering thus also expect it to come loaded with more gizmos inside than the existing Swift.
Under the hood the Suzuki Baleno/YRA extracts its power from the 1.2 Litre K Series petrol motor while the diesel variant gets the 1.3 Litre Multijet diesel units. There are also talks that it will even get a more powerful 1.4 Litre unit too while the diesel will get the bigger 1.6 Litre unit which also powers the recently launched S-Cross Crosover.
Update 26/10/15:-Maruti has officially launched the Baleno hatchback on 26th of October 2015 and now all the details are available so we have decided to update this review with all the information. We must also inform you that the hatchback will be sold via the Nexa outlets which presently also sells Maruti’s only premium Crossover the S-Cross.

The Baleno as we all know is a premium offering from Maruti and thus is positioned above the Swift hatchback. The Baleno os definitely bigger in dimension than the existing Swift but it is actually lighter than the existing hatchback, the reason behind the lower weight of the hatchback is the new lightweight platform. The Baleno is based on a completely new platform which as promised has increased the hatches rigidity and decreased the overall weight making the hatchback lighter which will definitely prove beneficial not only for its handling but also fuel efficiency.
Now we all are also aware of the fact that the exterior of the new Baleno has been inspired from the ik-2 concept which was actually showcased for the first time at the 2015 Geneva Motor show.
The styling is definitely not extraordinary but the exterior highlights such as the new V shaped front grille completed with a chromed lower tip, projector headlamps (available nonly with the top sped variants the rest gets halogen headlamps as standard) towards the front placed inside stretched back headlamp cluster surely redefines the whole front face of the hatchback. The LED Daytime running lamps positioned inside the headlamp cluster as well helps in enhancing the overall appeal. The Baleno also received a bigger air inlet towards the lower front bumper which gives the hatch some sporty appearance.
Towards the side profile Suzuki’s new “Liquid Flow” design theme has been clearly highlighted, the side profile gets blacked out pillars which adds a touch of sophistication and increases the premium quotient of the hatchback. We can also notice chrome door handles and even a roof spoiler towards the rear spoiler. The Baleno has been offered with a 15 inch and a 16 inch alloy wheels (depending on the different variant). Towards the rear things looks subtle while the only highlight being the LED taillamps and a chrome finished rear strip.
Length 3995 mm Width 1745 mm Height 1470 mm (1460 mm with SHVS)
The Baleno gets a new blacked out dashboard which is highlighted by those curvy and flowing lines, furthermore the dashboard gets touches of silver accents which seems to have worked in favor of the hatchback. The instrument cluster gets a high definition LCD screen which shows plenty of information apart from the speedometer and rpm meter.
Towards the center of the dash there is a big 7 inch LCD display which displays the infotainment features. The Baleno gets Smartphone Linkage Display Audio compatible with Apple CarPlay. This display also doubles up as a rear view camera display while backing up the vehicle. The infotainment has various others function as well the LCD screen also highlights the automatic air conditioner controls.
The seat in particular looks comfortable and according to Suzuki the rear seats provide generous shoulder room and plenty of legroom. The Suzuki baleno also provides a class leading luggage space of 339 Litres which is quite impressive considering the fact that this is only a B segment hatchback.
The top end variant gets a SmartPlay infotainment with Apple CarPlay which will also be segment first feature apart from that it will also come equipped with navigation system and voice command system. The display screen will also act as reverse camera which will help in reversing the hatchback safely. The other variants will get some interesting goodies which includes lewather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, driver seat height adjust, multifunction display with color TFT, steering mounted audio controls, while the glovebox, boot will get illumination as well for easy access. The Baleno will also come with 60:40 split seats.
The Baleno is offered in the International market with three engines, the most talked about drivetarin amongst the three is definitely the 1.0 BOOSTERJET direct-injection turbo engine (K10C DITC), this engine is capable of producing an impressive 110 Bhp of peak power at 5500 rpm and 170 Nm of torque in between 2000-3500 rpm. This engine will come paired with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
The other petrol engine on offer is a 1.2 Liter DUALJET dual-injection unit, this engine has now been developed and comes with lower NVH levels. Expect this engine to produce near about 90 Hp of peak power.
As far as our Indian market is concerned Maruti will launch the Baleno with either the 1.2-litre petrol unit which is seen in many other Maruti Suzuki products. THis engine is capabl;e of producing about 62 KW of peak power at 6000 rpm and 115 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. The engine has been paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox while there is also a CVT gearbox on offer but is available with Delta variant. The petrol variant promises to offer 21.4 kmpl.
The diesel variant on the other hand is powered by the 1.3-litre diesel unit which is also seen on the S-Cross. This diesel motor produces about 55.2 Kw of peak power at 4000 rpm and 190 Nm of torque at 2000 rpm. This particular engine has been paired to a 5 speed manual transmision and it promises to return about 27.39 kmpl.
Maruti has payed lot of attention towards the safety features of this particular hatch and thus the new hatchback comes equipped with ABS with EBD and dual airbags (front) for the safety of the passengers inside.
