New Generation Suzuki Swift Showcased At 2017 Geneva Motor Show India Launch In 2018

New Generation Suzuki Swift Showcased At 2017 Geneva Motor Show India Launch In 2018

The Indian spec hatchback will be much different than the European spec unit

The new generation Swift made its World premiere at Japan last year December. Now recently Suzuki showcased the all new European-specific Swift at the 87th Geneva Motor show. The car is codenamed YSD internally, and reports state that it will launch in the Indian market early next year.

The new generation Swift is based on an entirely new lightweight platform which also underpins the Baleno as well as the Ignis Crossover. However, the platform has been tweaked to keep the sporty character of the hatchback intact which is found in the International spec hatchback. The new platform is also expected to be lighter and more rigid which will help the new car to loose some weight and also improve its handling characteristics.

The Indian spec Maruti Swift will be heavily localised to keep the prices in check. The reports also state that the new Swift will also be tuned to deliver the best performance and to handle Indian roads. The Indian spec hatchback will also get a slightly higher ground clearance to cope with Indian road conditions. To make the product even more lucrative, Maruti will sell the new Swift through their regular dealership to increase their reach across the Country instead of their premium dealership Nexa.

Presently we are still unaware of the Indian specs, but it will get the Boosterjet direct-injection turbo-petrol. The car will also get an automatic transmission beside the standard unit in both diesel as well as petrol drivetrain. At a later stage, Maruti could also introduce a sportier version of the Swift just like they have done with the Baleno.

Maruti-Suzuki Swift 2017 – Images leaked

The new Swift gets some serious cosmetic upgrades

The Maruti Suzuki Swift has touched great heights in Global as well as Domestic markets. The present generation Swift was launched back in the year 2010, and has been able to carry its predecessor’s success baton to all-new heights. But with monthly sales touching the 20k mark regularly, the Swift has become a very common sight on Indian roads. While this does showcase the brand’s triumph in the hatchback segment, the Maruti Swift has lost its exclusivity, as every other hatchback in India adorns the Swift moniker. But looks like the Japanese auto giant has something exciting coming our way!

A set of images has leaked on the Internet, that is bound to stir the Indian B2 hatchback segment. These images showcase undisguised design of the Maruti Suzuki Swift 2017, which is expected to be officially revealed later this year. The fourth-generation Maruti Swift has got comprehensive updates, both on the inside and outside.

The all-new Swift gets a renovated front fascia, which now houses a wider grille, snooping nose, and chubby fog lamp housing. But the most noticeable change is the sleeker headlamp clusters, that might house projectors and DRLs in the top-end trim. From the side, one may notice the beefed up wheel arches, a floating roof design, and 5-spoke spider-leg alloys that look similar to the ones offered with the Fiat Abarth Punto.

The new Maruti Swift interior too has been designed from scratch, and thus makes the Swift cabin a pleasant place to be in. The leaked images showcase an all-new flat-bottom steering wheel, which is reminiscent of the VW Polo. This new design of the Swift steering adds a pinch of sportiness to the car’s character. Other changes on the inside include a twin-pod instrument cluster, large touch-screen infotainment display, and contrasting trim inserts laid out on the dashboard and door panels.

Recently after the horrifically crumpled image of the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Baleno made headlines in national media, Maruti Suzuki Baleno’s structural integrity faced questions. We assume this is the reason Maruti Suzuki took steps to equip the Swift and Dzire with such safety features.

Incidentally Maruti Suzuki Swift and Dzire are two most sold and very popular cars in India. The Indo-Japanese auto manufacturer has sold more than 17000 units of Swift and Dzire in the fiscal year 2014-2015.

Guwahati High Court revokes ban on small cars

Guwahati High Court revokes ban on small cars

Guwahati High Court finally revokes ban on small cars after the verdict initiated controversy. In its latest verdict Guwahati High Court has allowed sales of small passenger cars under the 1500 kg category, but only those cars will be allowed for sales which meet the crash test and emission norm of government.

A few days earlier, Guwahati High Court gave verdict to stop registration and sale of 140 models in total which were less than 1500 kg, due to safety norms. These models included cars like Hyundai i10, Hyundai EON, Honda Jazz, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki Alto etc. Due to this verdict sales of small passenger cars were heavily affected in the north eastern states like Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh, the sales figure dropped to almost 60%. Incidentally, Assam is the largest market for small passenger cars in north east India with a selling number of small cars reaching nearly 5000 units every month, which came to a dead stop all of a sudden after the verdict.

After this, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) immediately filed a petition challenging the decision of Assam state transport department which led to the ban. SIAM also stated in the petition, that all the small cars sold in the country are certified and have passed all crash test, emission and other mandatory regulations, which are prescribed by the Motor Vehicles Act of India and these cars have been tested by the authorities like the Automotive Research Association of India. They claimed, therefore these cars come perfectly meeting the safety norms, and there is no valid ground to ban the registration and sale of these cars, which ultimately resulted Gauhati High Court revoked the ban today.

Video: Road rage in Mumbai, man clinging to wipers of a speeding car

Almost every now and then we watch road rages around us, but it is really hard to find a man clinging onto dear life on a speeding cars bonnet grabbing the wipers only. Well, it happens in movie, but not in real life, but that is exactly what happened in Mumbai.

Initially it was little petty road rage which ultimately turned ugly. In Navi Mumbai area two drivers who were later identified as Abdul Rashid Ansari and Santosh Shimikar, got involved in a tiff after a minor fender bending collision involving their vehicles. Abdul was driving a Maruti Swift, while Santosh was at the steering of a Volvo bus, when their vehicles collided. After the incident Abdul went and broke the windshield of thus with a bat, which took the matter further. In return Santosh climbed on to the bonnet of Abdul’s car in an attempt to stop him from driving away, although Abdul just became desperate and when he tried to evade the scene in full speed, Santosh lost control and fell on the bonnet.

From the CCTV footage we can see Santosh is clinging to the wipers of the speeding Swift. Abdul drove the car desperately for about 300 meters to pull Santosh down from his cars bonnet, while the bus driver clinged to the wipers in a desperate attempt to save his own life. Abdul even neglected the pedestrians and a police warning also, which we can see as a yellow raincoat wearing traffic police person is trying to stop the car. The entire incident was recorded in the CCTV, and Mumbai police didn’t waste time to nab the convict after four days of the incident. Santosh Shimikar got some minor injuries on his head and legs, he was released from hospital after primary treatment.

Expect the Swift Diesel equipped with the AMT unit to be priced about 45000 INR more than the existing diesel variant. While Maruti might also add some new features like DRL’s, new shades and even fog lamps to make the hatch even more presentable and attractive. Datsun GO & Maruti-Suzuki Swift Fails NCAP Crash Test (With Video)

How safe are Indian cars really? Global NCAP has been testing Indian cars since 2014 and the first test results of some of the popular Indian hatchbacks were shocking and believe it or not all of them except two failed the crash tests severely. Now recently they have conducted another crash test on two of the most popular hatchbacks in the Indian market and the tests are once again shocking.

It is a real shame for us Indians because India being considered the fifth largest producer of passenger cars yet our cars fails the international safety standard. The two cars that were tested recently are the popular Maruti Suzuki Swift and the recently launched Datsun GO and believe it or not both of the hatches failed to qualify an even get 1 star safety ranking. After the tests were conducted Global NCAP has given zero star safety ratings to both the hatches and also said the occupants inside are exposed to high risk of life-threatening injuries.

Global NCAP chairman Max Mosley said, hat India has every possibility of becoming the world leader in the automobile industry but the Indian consumers are totally unaware of how unsafe they would be during a crash. And that is the reason why they are pleased now that India too is launching an NCAP consumer testing programme, this crash test programme will help regulate UN’s minimum crash test standards in India which means the future passenger cars will be safer and will have proper crash structure and airbags

Maruti-Suzuki Will Supply Swift Range Extender To the Govenment

Maruti-Suzuki Will Supply Swift Range Extender To the Govenment

Maruti Suzuki had displayed its Swift Hybrid Hatchback in the Auto Expo 2014 and now the company is all set to supply a number of these hatches known as the Swift Range Extender to the Government for one of their projects. The dates have not yet been finalised yet because of the upcoming election but probably the project would be executed within the first half of the next year and the company will also provide the ‘green’ car to them in the financial year 2015.

Sources say that the homologation process of the car is in its final stage and the team is awaiting the ARAI certification. The Swift Range Extender will be categorized under the ‘Hybrid’ cars and it will derive its power from an inline, 3-cylinder, 658cc, petrol engine borrowed from Suzuki, Japan and because it’s an hybrid there is also a 55kw electric motor mounted on its front axle which gets its power from a 5kWh lithium ion battery. It takes about 90 minutes for the Swift Hybrid hatchback to get charged fully and it can run 25.5km at a stretch. The car returns a combined fuel efficiency of around 48.2kmpl and weighs around 130 Kilograms more than the standard production car.

Thus this car can be regarded as the ‘green’ car also; the sources have further revealed that the model which is ready for production has been developed in the country whilst the other important components like the electric motor, batteries etc. will be brought directly from Japan.

This car will be used for the pilot project which is to be undertaken by the Department of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, their task will include public transportation by these electric cars. The commercial production of this hatch shall kick-start only when the respective projects gets a green signal from the government but by the end of this year we may see these battery operated Swift Range Extender on the Indian road.

Maruti-Suzuki Swift Platinium edition

Maruti-Suzuki Swift Platinium edition

The Swift Platinum edition looks quite modern and updated but we must inform you that this is not a special edition hatch from the manufacturers stable; instead the modified Swift that you are seeing in the images has been created by a Bangalore based dealership.

They are calling this tweaked version of the Swift the ’Platinum edition’ and we must admit that it is carrying lots of goodies with it. The front of the car has a silver painted front grille and airdam which usually comes in Black color in the standard version of the Swift. The headlamps cluster too has been replaced with LED daytime running lamps and it is not clear from the images but it seems like it also have been fitted with projector headlamps at the front, whereas the brakes lights at the rear have been replaced with LED lamps.

The side profile of the car gets a new side skirt and grey colored alloy wheels while the rear gets a roof mounted spoiler. Lastly both the front and rear gets a lip spoiler, the exterior also gets some attractive body graphics and a ’Swift’ logo, while the interior has been fitted with premium leather seats and quality music system and an amplifier. There have been no changes under the hood of this car though.

We must admit that this initiative from the dealership will atleast help the Swift lovers of India to forget the sorrows of the Swift Sport not being launched in India anytime soon. The modification will be available on both the variants of the car including Diesel and Petrol and this exclusive Platinum edition could be yours if you shell out an extra 1, 40,000 Rupees over the on road price of the Swift.

2014 Maruti-Suzuki Swift

2014 Maruti-Suzuki Swift

For the year 2014, Suzuki decided to give their favorite model, Swift, a nip and tuck to make it look updated for next year. It never really required an update, as the current Swift already looks cool and modern. Nevertheless, it doesn’t hurt if the Japs decide to give it an update. So, here goes the updated features.

The updated Suzuki Swift comes with a redesigned front bumper that sports a larger grille and foglight enclosures to which they’ve, finally, introduced day-time LED lamps. At the mere sight, it instantly looks familiar if you’re well acquainted the new Hyundai i20. Don’t really know why Suzuki had to put it exactly at the same place and same style as the Hyundai i20’s arrangement. Welcome update though, as owners now don’t have to look for cheap aftermarket solutions.

The rear doesn’t embrace much change apart from a new a new LED high level brake lamp, that aids in visibility for other drivers, when braking. Other updates include new hub caps for lower variants and a new color option called the Boost Blue.

Inside, the Swift comes with power folding rear view mirrors fitted standard and a newly designed seats with with lined accents of blue and grey. Other than that, the interior remains untouched.

Suzuki hasn’t updated the engine lineup either as the Swift will come with the same 1.2-liter K-Series as a petrol engine option and Fiat’s 1.3-liter DDiS as the diesel option, that is currently offered in the Swift.

We bet there’ll be a slight increase in the price. But, with the updated features on offer, that is well expected. It will arrive in India at least by 2014. Overall, it’s a welcome update for the Swift, which shows Suzuki’s intent in keeping the Swift more desirable than ever before.

10 most fuel efficient diesel hatchbacks in India

The star in our list of the 10 most fuel efficient diesel hatchbacks in India is the Fiat manufactured 1.3-litre multijet engine. Used by Tata, Maruti Suzuki, Chevrolet and of course Fiat, this engine is featured in 6 different cars. Ironically the Fiat Punto only features in our list in number 10. Maruti, Tata and Chevrolet engineers have all managed to get better figures than Fiat engineers which is an irony. Also is a surprise that unlike 5 Maruti Suzuki’s which made it to our list of petrol hatchbacks, only 2 were able to make it in this time around.

Topspeed's list of aspirational cars in India

Topspeed’s list of aspirational cars in India

Aspiration means different things to different people. Aspiration is relative like our idea of fun. What might be aspirational for someone might not be to another. The Tata Nano for example is an aspirational car for those who own a two wheeler. At Topspeed we like cars which make us want to drive. Cars which make us dream, cars which want us want to get behind the wheel and remind us why we became automobile enthusiasts in the first case. In our selection of cars we have consciously kept a 40lakhs cap and have tried to pick cars from different segments. Aspirational cars to us would be those which possess dynamic ability, a responsive and eager engine or like in the case of the Mahindra Thar and the Toyota Fortuner SUV’s, cars on which we could go from home to Timbuktu. The Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 are the cheapest cars that we have chosen and both these cars and could realistically be afforded by a salaried person while the Skoda Laura offers a involving package both dynamically and performance wise at an attractive price. The 6th car, the BMW 328i is an automotive gem and though beyond the reach of most, it makes us fall in love yet again with automobiles.

2012 Maruti-Suzuki Swift Sport

2012 Maruti-Suzuki Swift Sport

In most of our reviews on the Maruti Suzuki Swift you’ll notice the words ‘Swift’ and ‘aspirational’ being uses more than once in the same sentence. There is no doubt that the Swift is probably the only aspitational car in the Indian market that one can expect to buy without putting their house on sale. The Volkswagen Polo 1.6 being the other option. Such has been the success of the Swift that the hatch has replaced the Maruti Suzuki Alto as the largest selling car in the Indian market for the month of April. Even though this might be only a temporary thing, the fact though remains that the Swift is more than twice the price of the Alto and after 87 months of remaining at the top, the Alto was replaced by the Swift. Sales have gone into overdrive after Maruti launched the 2011 model of the Swift and if rumours are to be believed, Maruti Suzuki is seriously considering launching the Swift Sport in India. Suzuki sells the Swift Sport in Europe, Japan and in Australia with a 1.6-litre petrol engine which produces 136PS but in India to keep the costs down the manufacturer could opt for the 1.4-litre K-series engine from the Ertiga or the 1.6-litre engine from the SX4. The Swift Sport has to be priced under 8lakhs for it to be seriously considered as an option.

Maruti-Suzuki Swift becomes largest selling car in April. Outsells Alto

Maruti-Suzuki Swift becomes largest selling car in April. Outsells Alto

The Maruti Suzuki Alto is no longer the largest selling car in India for a single month. After staying in that position for nearly 90 months, the Alto has lost its position to the Swift. This is pretty surprising because the Swift is nearly twice as expensive as the Alto. In the month of April the Swift sold a total of 19484 units as compared to 17842 units of the Alto. Maruti Suzuki in all sold 90255 units in April 2012 and retained its position as the largest automobile manufacturer in India.

The Swift was first launched in India in 2005 and since then it has created a niche for itself. Maruti launched the all new Swift last year and the hatch since then regularly has been the second highest selling car in the country but in April it managed to sell even more than the Alto. The 2011 Swift is more spacious, build quality has improved, so has the ride quality and the handling remains as sure footed as before. Dynamically the Swift is probably the best hatch in the country along with the Volkswagen Polo. But the reason for the Swift becoming the largest selling car in India is it being excellent value for money and because the engines are refined and efficient.

Incidentally, in April the sales of the Alto went down by 30 percent whereas the Swift’s sales grew by 83 percent in the same month. “Last year diesel vehicle sales grew by over 37 percent while there was a 14 percent decline in the sales of petrol cars. There is a huge pressure to sell petrol vehicles even with the high discounts. There is a tremendous shift towards diesel vehicles and we were caught flat-footed last year. This year we are increasing our diesel capacity by over 65 per cent,” said Mayank Pareek, Managing Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India. The top management in Maruti Suzuki however is not sure of Swift’s prospects in retaining this position in the future. “April was just a freak month and Alto will most certainly be back at the top,” commented I. V. Rao, Managing Executive Officer, Engineering, MSI.

Maruti Suzuki’s Ritz meanwhile attained the 2lakh sales number within 36 months of its launch. The Ritz is one of the fastest models to achieve the 2,00,000 mark.

Maruti-Suzuki launches limited edition Swift Alpha. Ertiga receives a great response

Maruti-Suzuki launches limited edition Swift Alpha. Ertiga receives a great response

The Maruti Suzuki Swift has been quite a success since it was launched last year. The Swift has been amongst the top five selling cars for a few months now and at times second only to the Alto in terms of sales. It’s however been the diesel engine that has been the more popular choice for most and sales of the petrol model have been relatively slow. Maruti has now launched a special limited-edition model of the Swift Petrol called the Swift Alpha.

The Swift Alpha is available only in the VXi variant and the Swift Alpha gets cosmetic upgrades like Bluetooth-equipped audio system with speakers, door-sill guards, a body-coloured rear spoiler, mud-flaps, seat-covers and even designer floormats and door visors. Maruti claims that if the customers opt to get these upgrades from the aftermarket they would have to spend extra Rs 8000. To really woo the customers, Maruti would not be charging them for the accessories.

Maruti Suzuki has also received an excellent response to the Ertiga LPV (life utility vehicle) and the all new seven-seater has bagged about 10000 bookings within the first five days of its launch.
