The new Ignis definitely will set a new benchmark in its segment

Suzuki unveiled the Ignis Crossover at the Tokyo Motor show and since then we knew that Maruti might have plans to launch it in the Indian market. And after almost a year we were certain that Maruti will be launching the new Ignis in India.

Recently the trend of converting compact hatchbacks into crossovers has taken the world by storm and be it premium auto manufacturers or any other manufacturers, they atleast have one compact Crossover under their belt. Now coming to the iconic Japanese auto maker Suzuki, they have been known for their small cars across the globe while their recent plans also are to launch almost 20 global car models. Maruti have already launched the Baleno hatchback which is the production variant of the IK-2 Concept. Now that we know that Maruti will be launching the new hatchback in India on 13th January 2017.

The Ignis Crossover will be positioned below the Vitara Brezza hatchback and will compete with some other Crossovers like Mahindra KUV100 and some other B-segment hatchbacks like Hyundai Grand i10 and many more.

The designers has not messed much with the production variant of the Ignis and thus the car looks identical to the concept IM-4 which was showcased at the Geneva Motor show. The production variant Ignis has a striking front profile which gets a large grille while the encapsulated headlamps which actually reminds you of the old retro Japanese cars. Towards the lower front bumper this compact Crossover gets round fog lamps engulfed in a casing. While towards the side profile the pronounced wheel arches and big stylish wheels will surely attract you attention. What else attracts your attention are the blacked out A and B pillars which helps in adding the extra oomph to the Crossover. There is even three slat vents positioned towards the C Pillar which is definitely unique.

Towards the rear profile things does not look too bright however you do get these retro looking taillamps which definitely is enough to attract all the attention.

Although the exterior might have retro theme reflecting all over it but inside things look a lot brighter and really modern. The dashboard gets a touchscreen which will get Maruti’s SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system. While this particular Crossover promises to provide comfortable seating for 5 persons inside. The steering wheel too gets multifunctional unit which can be used to control the infotainment system. The instrument cluster too looks really modern as well. Apart from the dashboard the seats too looks well bolstered and well contoured. The Suzuki Ignis also promises an impressive boot space at the rear.

While for the comfort of the passengers the top spec Alpha variant gets Automatic air conditioner, driver seat height adjuster, electronically adjsuatble rear ORVMS’s.


Talking about drivetrain the Indian spec Maruti Ignis will get 1.2 Litre VVIT petrol unit which is capable of producing about 61 KW of peak power and 113 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission and also gets an AMT transmission as optional. The diesel variant on the other hand gets the 1.3 Litre DDis diesel unit which is capable of producing about 55.2 KW of peak power at 4, 000 rpm and 190 NM of torque at 2,000 rpm. Surprisingly the diesel variant too gets both 5 speed manual transmission as standard while the AMT transmission comes as an option.

If we talk about fuel efficiency then Maruti claims that the 1.2 Litre petrol motor promises around 20.89 Km to a litre while the diesel variant on the other hand promises 26.80 km to a litre.

The Indian spec Maruti Ignis has been equipped with plenty of safety features the Ignis gets ABS and EBD, dual front airbags, pedestrian protection, Seat Belt Pre-tensioners with Force Limiters, Full Frontal, Frontal Offset, Side Impact Safe and ISOFIX child seat anchorage as standard. While additional optional safety features includes security alarm system, rear parking sensor, rear defogger and childproof rear doors and many more.


The Maruti Ignis will be launched on 13th January 2017 in India. As far as the pricing is concerned expect the new car to be priced in between 4.5-7 Lakh bracket.


Ford Ecosport

The biggest competitor of the upcoming Ignis will definitely be the all new updated Ford Ecosport. Ford has recently launched the updated variant of the Ecosport and it although has not chnaged much in terms of mechanicals but it surely has recieved quite a few updates. The 1.5 Litre diesel too generates more power now which is quite impressive. The other two pterol engine on offer is the 1.5 Litre petrol and the renowned 1.0 Litre Ecoboost unit.

Mahindra TUV300

Mahindra launched their recent entrant in the compact SUV segment and its called the TUV300. Styling wise the compact SUV gets a tank inspired design which actually makes the UV look rugged. Inside the TUV300 provides a much improved interior which includes a new dashboard layout and new steering wheel. Under the hood the TUV300 gets 1.5 Litre three-cylinder mHawk 2-stage turbocharged diesel engine which is capable of producing about 84 Hp of peak power and 230 Nm of torque. The engine has been paired to a 5 speed manula transmission while there is also an option of first-in-class ‘autoSHIFT’ technology (Automated Manual Transmission).


The Maruti Ignis surely will leave a huge impact when it finally launches here in the Indian market. If priced aggressively this Crossover surely provides plenty of new and premium stuffs that has never ever seen before in a Maruti car. While under the hood it is still powered by the renowned 1.2 Litre and the 1.3 Litre petrol and diesel motor. The crossover also benefits from both manual as well as AMT transmission since the time of its launch, while the completely new premium interior too is something that we all are actually looking forward to.
