Maruti-Suzuki S-Cross

2015 Maruti-Suzuki S-Cross

Our readers should agree with me here that the Indian auto scene is changing and fast, Indian consumers too have become bolder, courageous and more open minded towards welcoming new products and offerings. As a result of that they have gradually shifted their focus from the regular hatchbacks, sedans and trusty old and bulky SUV’s towards some modern looking sleek, sporty and dynamic products which are being offered by both homegrown as well as International auto manufacturers. As a result of that we have many new segments which are ruling the Indian auto market currently take for example the MPV, compact SUVs and even Crossovers.

All other manufacturers have already tried their hands on the compact SUV segment and as a result this segment is flooding with many new products, we have seen Renault starting the trend with the Duster SUV while other followed later. However the latest entrant who will be joining the bandwagon is the S-Cross which will be launched by one of the trusted auto manufacturer of India Maruti Suzuki. The S-Cross will be direct rival of the above mentioned compact SUV’s and also the recently launched Hyundai Creta. The S-Cross is basically a crossover which is based on the compact sedan SX4 which was replaced by Ciaz and it will also help Maruti to venture into the unexplored territory of compact SUVs and crossovers of the Indian market.

So go through our first impression of the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross prtemium Crossover to find out all the bits and bytes about this new crossover.

EXTERIOR

"The best thing about this crossover is the fact that it never tried nto look like a compact SUV"

Take a clear look at its exterior and you will definitely find lots of similarities with the SX4 sedan which was not so popular in the Indian market and due to its poor sales figures was discontinued last year. The S-Cross is almost 15 cm longer than the original sedan and thus it definitely provides better room inside but we will be talking about its interior bit later but first let us give you an entire detail of its exterior.

There is nothing much to boast about this typical vehicles looks, the front of the S-Cross gets the identical Suzuki grille and badge, while the SX4 look alike front headlamps gets HID projector units and also daytime running lamps integrated in them and will be made available only with the top end variants which also help add to the premium quotient of this crossover.

The side profile of the car looks muscular with the addition of the side claddings which makes you think that this car is suitable for offroading too, now according to the latest information the S-Cross gets only 180 mm ground clearance which is comparitively less compared to its Indian market rivals.

At the rear of the car you will find two part tail lamps which enhances the rear styling of this crossover. To make the car look interesting Suzuki has used scuff plates and black claddings all around the car and roof rails mounted on the roof which are very common styling accessories of most of the crossovers you will find in the Indian market.

The best thing about this crossover is the fact that it never tried nto look like a compact SUV and Maruti is not even calling it a compact SUV either instead they are calling itr a proper Crossover. The S-Cross looks like a hatchback and it also gets the plastic body claddings and scuff plates and even roof rails on top of the roof. The top end variants also gets few goodies like projector headlamps, rear parking sensors and 16 inch alloy wheels.

DIMENSION

Length 4300 mm
Width 1756 mm
Height (With roof rail) 1590 mm
Wheelbase 2600 mm
Ground Clearance 180 mm
Turning Radius 5.2 m
Seating Capacity 5 people
Fuel Tank Capacity 48 litres

INTERIOR

Step inside the back of the car and you will notice the transmission tunnel which may cause some sort of trouble for the third passenger who will be sitting in the middle while the two other passengers seating at the rear seat can still enjoy the generous amount of leg room provided inside, infact by the looks of it we can certainly tell you that the knee and the leg room is almost similar to the or may be even more than what you will find in the Duster or the Terrano, however we are not so sure about the headroom though.

The top end variants of the S-Cross definitely gets some goodies which comes in the form of leather seats, keyless entry, touchscreen infotainment system with 7 inch touchscreen it also comes with navigation system, Automatic AC, driver seat height adjuster, reclining seats, rear parking camera, engine push start button, cruise control etc.

Like I already mentioned above the S-Cross maynot be a showstopper but it comes with plenty of space inside, the new Crossover offfers 353 Litres of boot space at the rea, fold the rear seats and it offers even more space 375 Litres to be exact. While the same car offers about 810 Litres of space with all the seats folded.

DRIVETRAIN

To our surprise Maruti has only offered the Crossover with only two diesel engine options under its hood and unfortunately you won’t be getting any petrol engine under the hood as of now.

The S-Cross will be available with a 1.6 Litre (DDis320) diesel unit which will be capable of producing about 118 Bhp of peak power and 320 Nm of torque, this engine will be mated to a 6 speed manual transmission which will send all those power to the front wheels. The other smaller diesel unit offered with the S-Cross is the common 1.3 Litre (DDis200) which will be capable of producing about 89 Bhp of peak power and 200 Nm of torque, this engine will be mated to a 5 speed manual transmission which will also send power to the front wheels.

Like you noticed that the S-Cross will only be available in the Indian market with front wheel drive layout and they are not offering the popular AllGrip AWD system which is available in the International market which is well! Really disappointing.

RIDE AND HANDLING

The S-Cross is fitted with the conventional suspension setup that you will find in most other vehicles; it uses McPherson struts with coil springs at the front while it has been fitted with torsion beams with with coil springs at the rear of the car. This suspension setup is quite popular in our Indian market and thus will be able to tackle Indian roads with ease.

SAFETY FEATURES

Maruti has provided their premium Crossover with some important life saving features. ALl the variants of the S-CRoss premium crossover has been equipped with both front and driver side airbags, ABS and disc brakes on all the 4 wheels in all the variants.

COMPETITION

RENAULT DUSTER

Renault Duster is popular compact SUV in the Indian market and it is knwon for its spacious interiors balanced body and efficient engines. The Renault Duster is available with a 1.6 liter petrol engine which produces 102.5bhp of maximum power while the 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine generates 84bhp of peak power.

HYUNDAI CRETA

The Creta is definitely is the most anticipated compact SUV of its segment and it will launched before the S-Cross. However this SUV excels in the looks department and its engine lineup too looks promising. The Creta will be launched in the Indian market with 1 petrol and two diesel engine options which include 1.6 dual VTVT petrol unit delivering 123 PS of peak power, while the diesel engines which will be made available with the Creta are 1.4-liter U2 CRDi diesel and a more-powerful 1.6-liter CRDi

CONCLUSION

The S-Cross definitely looks promising and will also attract quite a lot of attention because it will have the Maruti Suzuki tag behind it as far as the auto manufacturer is concerned certainly the new cars will help Maruti Suzuki to enter the unexplored territory of Compact SUV’ s and Crossovers.

The S-Cross definitely comes with loaded interiors and will also come with softer suspension setup for good ride quality. For those who are happy with the fact that the S-Cross is actually more of an urban Crossover than a terrain conqueror will absolutely love the car.

Maruti-Suzuki testing S-Cross AWD in India

India’s largest auto manufacturer Maruti-Suzuki introduced the S-Cross compact crossover last year in Indian market. The car is based on the SX4. Launched in 2WD configuration the car was claimed to come capable for major off-roading tasks. Although despite being SUV lovers Indian customers didn’t show much interest to the S-Cross.

Now the automaker is testing an AWD version of the model. The AWD technology is dubbed as AllGrip technology by the Maruti-Suzuki. The Maruti-Suzuki S-Cross equipped with AllGrip technology was seen competing in the two most popular motorsport events in India like Raid de Himalaya and Desert Storm. The question remains, is Maruti-Suzuki trying to develop an interest among the customers about the AWD version of the not so popular car? The answer is, probably not. Instead of promoting the AWD version of the model, the Indo Japanese automaker is trying to build an image for the outgoing S-Cross model, which is yet to garner the expected sales figure. Moreover, an AWD version of the model doesn’t have much potential as well.

Maruti-Suzuki S-Cross might get 1.0 litre Boosterjet petrol engine

Maruti-Suzuki launched the S-Cross last year with diesel engine options, which include a 1.3 litre MJD unit and a 1.6 litre unit. But the Indo Japanese automaker is planning to introduce a 1.0 litre Boosterjet petrol engine to the model which would roll out of production line at the end of this year. This engine will generate power for decent performance along with good amount of fuel efficiency. With the help of the turbo charger it will deliver the performance like the larger 1.6 litre unit.

Not only that, Maruti-Suzuki S-Cross will get another petrol engine in form of a 1.4 litre K series unit, which does duty under the hood of Maruti-Suzuki Ciaz. The Ciaz sedan comes with a 1.4 litre petrol unit which churns out 91 bhp of peak power at 6000 rpm and 130 Nm of peak torque at 4000 rpm. Although there is no confirmation available from the Indo Japanese automaker about this petrol engine, but it would definitely make the S-Cross more affordable and appealing for larger number of customers. Incidentally, Maruti-Suzuki is expected to launch the performance oriented Baleno RS which would get the 1.0 litre Boosterjet petrol engine under the hood.

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross is sold through the automaker’s premium retail network NEXA. Despite being launched with so much hype the car is yet to gain sales momentum.

In what may sound like a one-of-its-kind move by any manufacturer in the country, Maruti Suzuki has started to offer compensations to early buyers of its premium crossover, the S-Cross. This compensation to existing owners comes on the backdrop of the automaker reducing ex-showroom prices of the S-Cross by around 1 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki has been leading the Indian automotive market ever since the introduction of the erstwhile Maruti 800. Over the years, many new global automakers have invaded the Indian industry, but none of them has been able to overthrow Maruti Suzuki from the market leader’s throne. The primary reason behind this unmatched success run of the Japanese automaker is its robust customer support and unprecedented levels of customer satisfaction. And if reports coming from existing Maruti S-Cross owners are to be believed, Maruti is not taking this customer faith for granted.
