Suzuki unveiled the Ignis Crossover at the Tokyo Motor show and since then we knew that Maruti definitely will bring it to the Indian market. And after almost a year we were assured by the Maruti officials that they certainly will be introducing the new Ignis in India.
Now coming to the iconic Japanese auto maker Suzuki, they have been known for their small cars across the globe while their recent plans also are to launch almost 20 global car models. Maruti have already launched the Baleno hatchback which is the production variant of the IK-2 Concept and this is actually a global product which mens better build quality, improved interiors and impressive safety features feature for the passengers inside. Let’s not get into all those details and focus completely on the car which was launched today on 13th January 2017 at a gala event where Swedish DJ, Axwell performed live. To all our surprise Maruti has priced the Ignis compact Crossover quite aggressively which is actually a good thing.
The Ignis Crossover has derived from the IM-4 concept; the car was already previewed at the 2016 Auto expo and was unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor show. The Ignis Crossover is positioned below the Vitara Brezza hatchback and will compete with some other B-Segment hatchback & Crossovers like the Mahindra KUV100, Hyundai Grand i10, Ford Figo etc.

The designers has not messed much with the production variant of the Ignis and thus the car looks identical to the concept IM-4 which was showcased at the Geneva Motor show.
Compared to the concept the production variant Ignis has a striking front profile with a large grille with some chrome elements on it. The encapsulated headlamps actually will remind you of the old retro Japanese cars. Suzuki says that the headlamp design has been inherited from the first-generation Cervo, which was their fist mini sports car. The lower front profile of the Ignis however looks quite modern because of the sportier yet bold appearing front bumper; this sporty bumper also gets integrated round shaped fog lamps which definitely blend well with the capsule like silhouette of the Crossover. The front bonnet gets clamshell shaped bonnet and fender garnish which actually are some of now elements considered by Suzuki for their SUV designs. This kind of design was first implemented on the first generation Vitara SUV.
The side profile gets big wheels which are pushed to the extreme corners to gain maximum interior space inside. The Blacked out B-Pillar and the thick C- Pillar once again reminds you of the old Japanese cars. The C-Pillar styling has been inherited from Fronte Coupe which was actually Suzuki’s first mini sports car sold in Japan.
The rear profile too carries over the retro design elements and gives this car a very unique styling which will makes the Ignis one unique looking Crossover with old yet modern styling never seen before in a Suzuki car recently.
If we ask me then the Ignis is Crossover is one unique looking car which will certainly attract the attention of SUV crazed Indian fans.

Although the exterior might have retro theme reflecting all over it but inside things look a lot brighter and really modern. Quite honestly none of us have seen such a modern and well equipped interior in a Maruti product ever.
The dashboard gets a completely new touchscreen system which gets Maruti’s SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system which supports Apple Car play and Android Auto. The newly designed steering wheel too gets multifunctional unit which can be used to control the infotainment system. Talking about drivetrain the Indian spec Maruti Ignis gets shares the same petrol powertrain with the Swift and Baleno hatchback. The 1.2 Litre VVIT petrol unit is capable of producing about 61 KW of peak power and 113 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission and also gets an AMT transmission as optional which sends power to the front wheels. The diesel variant on the other hand gets the 1.3 Litre DDis diesel unit which is capable of producing about 55.2 KW of peak power at 4, 000 rpm and 190 NM of torque at 2,000 rpm. Surprisingly the diesel variant too gets both 5 speed manual transmission as standard while the AMT transmission is available as an option.
If we talk about fuel efficiency then Maruti claims that the 1.2 Litre petrol motor promises around 20.89 Km to a litre while the diesel variant on the other hand promises 26.80 km to a litre.
Coming to performance factor there is no doubt in the fact that the Ignis Crossover underpins a completely new platform which is lightweight and rigid and more stable. This has helped reduce the overall weight of the vehicle which in return will help the Ignis Crossover to provide a zippy yet comfortable ride. As far as the suspension setup is concerned the Crossover rides on McPherson Strut setup at the front and Torsion Beam setup towards the rear.

That one car which the newly launched Ignis will lock is horns with is the Mahindra KUV100. This car surely offers a lot more than a hatchback. The Mahindra KUV 100 is offered with two engine options. The petrol variant gets the 1.2 liter unit belting out 83 PS of power and 115 Nm of torque while the diesel variant gets the 1.2 liter diesel mill squeezing out 78 PS of power and 190 Nm of torque, figures which exactly mirror that of the Ignis. However, the both the engines of the KUV 100 are three cylinder mills, which somehow lack the refinement when you compare with that of the Ignis.,
The Maruti Ignis surely will leave a huge impact in the Indian market because this will also be Maruti’s first big step in this new segment. The Crossover is priced aggressively and also provides plenty of new and premium stuffs that have never ever seen before in a Maruti car. While under the hood the Crossover still is powered by the renowned 1.2 Litre K series petrol and the 1.3 Litre diesel motor which are also used in number of their other cars. The crossover also benefits from both manual as well as AMT transmission which are offered during the time of its launch. Lastly the completely new premium interior too is something that we are the owners will enjoy.
